Altec Lansing Mix iMT800 really wants to be a boombox, isn't
Gaze upon Altec Lansing's history of iPod / iPhone docks, and you shall see no hint, not even the subtle off-white coloring of an implication, that the company would go this boombastic with its latest offering. The Mix iMT800 might not quite have the necessary panache to compete with the Lasonic i931, but it still talks a good fight. With a 5.25-inch side-firing subwoofer, it should live up to its boast of "towering volume," while a pair of useful 3.5mm line inputs will allow you to jack in non-Apple players too. We've got a couple more images after the break, including the totally rad remote and mean-looking woofer, and if you like what you see, they're available now for $299.

I love this...in a "this is so ugly and over the top that I just have to carry it on the subway and annoy people" sort of way.
Oh an thanks for the Lasonic memories!
yes and while it is on your shoulder annoying people someone comes up and swipes your iphone.
I honestly can't think of a situation where I'd use something that ridiculous. I've got headphones on the go, my home theater, my car speakers... the first pic makes it look awful, but the second two make it look desirable IMHO.
Sir, if you are able to park your cool car on your backyard or take your home theater outside*, then forget you ever saw this beauty.
I could use this as my alarm clock, if it were to have that option.
*BBQ, picnic, pool party, annoy people, whatev...
OMG, I totally forgot that I can set my iPod's Alarm Clock... DUH!
Want it!
I could use that at a Nascar tailgate party!
It looks like it would go good with Jim Beam...
yeah in my HOMI opinion it looks over the top.
I just don't get these types of devices, IT'S COMING OUT OF AN IPOD! The sound quality from that 3.5mm headphone jack connecting your low quality sound files you got from limewire just isn't going to ever sound that good. Why pay 300 bucks for a souped up boombox just to play that low quality music? You're better off going to Best Buy and getting one of those cheap home theater in a box's and getting a 3.5mm to RCA cable. It'll save you $150 and be just as loud plus connect to other sources, some of them can even charge your ipod/phone. Or at least buy a little clock radio ipod thingy but 300 to play music off of an ipod is just crazy to me.
How good exactly do you think this device sounds? What made you think it was high quality? Was it the Altec Lansing name? Was it the presence of a subwoofer (mp3s have no problem reproducing bass, btw)?
And what makes you think that people who have $300 to sport for a piece of junk like this only have Limewire music on their iPod and not 256kpbs AAC iTunes Plus files or even Apple lossless?
And I think it's funny you think somehow good sound can't escape an iPod through the 1/8" jack, but if the cable connected to it has RCA crowns on the other end instead of another 1/8" jack, then suddenly it can. Or that despite the actual presence of an 1/8" jack on this device in the picture that this can't hook to other other devices like a mini system!
Don't get me wrong, I find this device ridiculous. Also, I find this price ridiculous. It's the same price the iPod HiFi flopped at I think. But rolling in all these arguments doesn't make sense to me.
I think you kind of missed my point. I wasn't saying that the RCA to 1/8 would sound better but it would be a whole lot cheaper for basically the same quality of sound. Yes you could have better than terrible quality limewire files but playing anything out of your ipod/phone will only sound but so good. Why pay $300 for something passing itself off as some high quality sound system just to play music out of a 1/8 jack? That was my point, I think you would pretty much agree.
The Limewire thing was a joke too, I would pray to God that no one uses it. Then again, I saw it on someone's computer last week and had the nerve to be complaining that their computer was "slow", I just don't understand people.
mag, how old are you? Do you remember listening to music through crappy boom boxes using cassette tapes? You don't think the iPod's output of even 128Kbps MP3s is far superior to that of cassettes? Gimme a break.
Of course, but I didn't pay 300 for that cassette boom box. All I'm saying is for the price of 300, it better sound like a damn symphony orchestra is walking behind me. If it was 150, I'd have no issue
And I do realize I have tho option of not buying it so I'm done wasting time complaining about it. Just something tells me deep down someones gonna buy this, I want to save them.
Wow. That is so...
Look at that.
"wants to be a boombox, isn't"
Grammar school is waiting.
Wants as in "does"? Then it should be "doesn't it?"
WTF are you talking about... it makes total sense?
what are you talking about?
No, it shouldn't be "doesn't it". they aren't asking you a question, they are making a statement. It wants to be a boombox, but it isn't. Now that you understand their meaning, if you still have an issue with the grammar look at every newspaper in the world and see how many, many, many headlines often use sentence fragments.
Now lose your false sense of accomplishment you get from trying to correct engadget when they didn't even make a mistake.
Should read a newspaper, doesn't.
Even if it were technically incorrect (which it isn't), the sentence reads fine as it is. "really wants to be a boombox, doesn't" reads awkwardly and is difficult to understand what the "doesn't" refers to -- you expect something to follow that up. "Isn't" is fine.
(It) wants to be a boombox. (It) isn't.
Clear as a bell, Clarabell.

Thank you Mr Grammar, but you are wrong.

lol a 5.2 inch subwoofer xD
Looks like it belongs in a server rack.
Maybe a beowulf cluster of them.
I'm just laughing at the fact that this monster is still $100 cheaper than a certain other 4 letter sound company's ipod dock....
I have four different Ipod "Boomboxes" two of which are Altec lansing. I have various uses for them, I have a logitech mm50 that i keep in my vehicle for traveling (Hotels, small picnics, etc), However the most Boom, bang & sound for the money is my Altec lansing IM7(Parties & Large Cookouts) I think it sounds as good or even better than the apple Hi-fi Dock. The major problem is the door on the IM7's usually become sprung after normal use in a short period of time & the company will not repair or replace them unless under warranty by authorized retail store (not online either) the second problem is it wont charge my Itouch. With all that said. I love this unit and would love to have one without these problems. They even manufactored one which was never sold in the US and no longer in production (in black too) Here is a link on their website

I've bought something like this already. It's a Bose Velocity 2go 6. It cost £50 from a surplus type website (all gone now). It's supposed to be used as a subwoofer for a car but I use it as a neighbour annoyance system. It takes 8 aa batteries and they recharge in the thing. Find one and buy one!
now that is what the hell I'm talking about, +1

I'd buy it
One of the most overlooked features is that it actually plays Beta-max tapes in the back!
OK, I understand the 1/8" input for your garden-variety MP3 player, but do I spy TWO iPod connections? Really? Is that necessary? (Or, rather, how many people will actually use that?)
