Casa Bugatti's Vera electric kettle proves that even boiling water can be interesting, pricey
Know what we really love? Tea kettles. The thing is, plenty of them look like there was roughly zero thought put into their design -- and we've all gotten into the habit of accepting those 3 or 4 basic designs offered to us. No more. Bugatti's got a wholly new approach to boiling water on the horizon, in the form of the Vera. It's beautifully designed, it's got a nice array of electronic timing functions -- but the bells and whistles are just icing on this beautiful, delicious cake. The Vera kettle will be available this September, for around $300.

As overpriced as Bugatti is, I expected it to be $3000. Beautiful design though.

"As overpriced as Bugatti is, I expected it to be $3000. Beautiful design though."
Bugatti and overpriced? Let me guess, you're American?
That is a pretty substantial design premium on the perfectly functional $15 electric kettles I use. I like the design, though. Maybe I'll wait for the $20 Sunbeam copy.
Yeah, I hear you. $300 for a tea kettle? All it does is boil water. You can do that with a $5 pot.
Besides, people have been boiling water for thousands of years with less.
The fact is, $300 on this is a complete waste of money, but each to their own.
0 to 60 degrees?
It's articles like these that make me love engadget! You
made my morning, Ty.
Celcius or Fahrenheit? You guys also boil on the wrong side of the stove.
Neither is going to get you a good cuppa...
Why do americans add unnecersary words to stuff, like "tea" to kettles? kettles are used for boiling water, not just tea.
And how you say "spicy curry" as an ingredient, when naturally a curry shold be spicy.
Or "hot tea" why not just say tea? say Ice tea if its cold, tea if its hot. It's meant to be hot
Silly Americans, new to the world
I ordered tea in Chicago once and was brought a cup of hot disgusting brown water with a string hanging off to the side.
Tea should be served cold, over ice with a lemon wedge. Silly people.
You seem fun.
Ah but you see, here they also have Sweet Tea, Unsweet tea, Hot tea, cold tea and a black liquid they call coffee. none of which are accually close to the real thing.
Personally my major complaint is Americans is that they miss words out of sentences. You hear American news readers say things like "a new bill was passed Wednesday" instead of "a new bill was passed on Wednesday". In the American version Wednesday just seems to have been thrown in there with no relation to the rest of the sentence.
They also read the year 2009 as "two-thousand nine" instead of "two-thousand and nine". Rather ridiculously they then read 2020 as "twenty twenty". If "twenty twenty" is 2020 then surely "two-thousand nine" must be 20009. This sort of inconsistency and confusion is what you'd expect to happen if you start missing connecting words out of sentences. Particles exist for a reason! Use them!
CURSE YOU, AH-MARR-EECANZ!
@Richard
The "and" should only be used if you're talking about a non-whole number. "Two thousand and nine tenths", "Three and three quarters", etc. When reciting a whole number, there shouldn't be an "and".
@CtrlBurn
I applaud your commendable command of grammar sir. Well done.
What, you've never had a tepid tea?
No, the ‘and’ should always be used since it's 2000 and 9 = 2009. In the American version there's absolutely nothing to distinguish between the list of two numbers 2000, 9 and the single number 2009 since both would be read "two-thousand nine". Clearly missing words from sentences leads to a lack of clarity and a lot of potential for confusion.
Of course I'm sure all you Americans "could care less" about this...
I'm going to be Richard giving a business report.
"We received packages numbered two thousand and nine and twenty."
What do I mean? Is it two or three packages? Who knows! Sure, you could say that if it were three you'd omit the first and, but in colloquial speech this isn't a given.
Anyways, Richard, would you also say 22 as "twenty and two?" I highly doubt it. Then why would you say 2009 as "two thousand and nine?" If you do you're being completely inconsistent.
Silly non-Americans.
"We received packages numbered two thousand and nine and twenty." What do I mean? Is it two or three packages?
It is very clear from the sentence that two packages have been received. If it was three packages you would say “we received packages numbered two thousand, nine and twenty". See, the English version is clear and accurate.
Do you not consider it absurd that you’re trying to argue that the English way of speaking the English language is incorrect? I can’t decide if this is a case of extreme arrogance or extreme stupidity.
I bought an electric kettle off of Target.com because they don't even sell them in the states (or at least, not that I could find). It was 13 dollars and does what this does, boil water. What moron would pay more? All you do is tilt and pour... can it really be improved on that much more?
Actually, yes. The "perfect" temperature for brewing coffee is 200 degrees (f). I'm sure there's an ideal temp for brewing tea as well. If that's what you're into, you need a kettle with temp control.
I heard it was 176 degrees F for coffee
Watch out Porsche!
No thanks.. I ll settle for a Veyron.
$300 vs. $1,500,000?
Worth it.
Here's a crazy idea, how about car companies sticking to, get ready for this one - making cars. The rash of non car-related products and paraphernalia (i.e. appliances, furniture, clothing, etc.) these companies are pushing out in order to "supplement the discerning lifestyles" of their supposedly loyal customer base is reaching newer and higher levels of ridiculousness.
It's actually a company called Casa Bugatti, not affiliated with the guys who make cars. So for them, sticking to cars may not be the best idea.
:)

heres a crazy idea: stick with one sex! nobody likes an androgynous weirdo!
The car companies would usually just deal w/ the license issues while the unaffiliated third party designs/ markets the product. In the case of Acer laptops and Ferrari, the former, along w/ AMD and others are also sponsors of the F1 team. But it rarely goes beyond that.
On topic, this is a gadget that every geek should waste his $$ on.
$300 for an electric heating element... really?
Splendid!
Can we talk about new blenders and microwave ovens next?
Perhaps a feature in Ask Engadget?
The comments have MORE than enough to say about Blendtek blenders, as well as the ability of various gadgets to operate a certain video game with very high requirements.
But I bet they've never seen nor discussed a blender/microwave oven crossover gadget?
Heard of a device that heats off pretty easily and sort of gnashes everything you feed on it?
Oh wait...

Ahh, the only Bugatti that I can afford, and unless I want to install 220v in my kitchen, I can't even use it! Or is there a US version? Either way, seems expensive.
I'm still using a whistling kettle.
I was of the opinion that the vast majority of the US still was, every time I'm over there and visit/stay in a house there is never an electric kettle to be seen, it's very surreal.
Usually, we just put a cup of water in the microwave. 60 seconds to delicious hot tea. Last time I remember using a tea kettle was for a science project as a kid. Even then I had to buy it at a thrift store because I couldn't find a new one!
Might want to rethink doing that http://www.hoax-slayer.com/microwave-water.html or at least put a spoon in it if you don't
How many MPG can I expect?

Should we expect Top Gear to run a follow up review?
May's probably going to get one for his Lego house.

actually, plenty of thought was put into the design of kettles. that's why you have handles that don't burn you, caps that whistle when water boils, handy spouts that allow you to properly aim your pour, and all built with an economical yet sturdy material that allows the product to be manufactured and sold for a LOT LESS than this thing.
this electric kettle seems really cool, but don't dog the design of regular kettles which are obviously well designed and by all means a commercial success.
Awesome. I always wanted an appliance that costs about as much as (or more than) a 22" 1080p HD TV with the sole function of boiling water. Now that's value.
Actually, upon further consideration: PS3 Slim, or hot water? Life is full of tough choices.
Tea tastes like water that has rotting leaves in it.
Can it boil my water at precisely the right temperature? I like more water to boil at 212 degree Fahrenheit (when I am at sea level).
Pretty impressive to bring water to a specified temperature. This is important for teas but I do not drink much tea.
