Purported Canon EOS 7D poster, lenses turn up online
Well, it's nearly become an annual event at this point, but it looks like those patiently waiting for a Canon EOS 7D now have a bit more fodder to consider, with a purported new poster and some new lenses for the camera recently turning up online. As you can see above, however, that poster reveals only a few details and an even less complete look at the camera itself, which was most recently spotted in pieces. The rumored new lenses, on the other hand, are making themselves seen considerably more clearly and, if the pics (after the break) are to believed, include an EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens and a longer EF-S 18-135m f/3.5-5.6 IS. Still looking for a bit more? There's charts and graphs at the read link below.

EF-S? Meh.. wake me up when they release some kick ass EF lens with a sane price - something like 50mm f1.8 for what used to be 75$. Real bang for money.
Uh... the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II is the low-end staple. And its under $100.
Yep and it's also very sharp, but best when manual focused.
Now let's hope that 15-85 doesn't have strange barrel distortions like his older brother.
Indeed. 15-85 is a great focal range, if only it were faster, well 3.5 is not that bad and at least there's IS.
Does anyone know where this camera fits in the line-up? Better then the 5D, replacement for the 50D? They finally going back the old numbering scheme (lower the number, more high-end it is)??
It is NOT better than the 5DMkII. Though it really is interpretation that matters. I'm only speaking from the price point. THis camera WILL NOT BE FULL FRAME!!! If all this is true.
1. EF-S lenses
2. 6.3 fps (the FF 5D's have always been slower) except for the $4k+ range
3. flash on the body (side shots and supposed top piece.)
4. small prism-indicated by the poster.
It also has a mode dial which means it's under the 5D range since that's the highest price point to include a mode dial. Being that it's not FF, then we're looking at a 50D replacement. Or Canon could drop the 50D, bring back the 40D for $900 body, and sell this for $1400 and that'd be really cool!
The 40D ain't coming back. The 50D seems like it should be near end of life. We sell them for under $900 refurbished so price is getting towards end of life.
The camera should be above the xxD (currently 50D) and below the 5D. It is rumored to cost $1800-2000.
For Canon's nomenclature, the xD line goes closer to professional as the numbers approach one. This goes back to the old Eos-1 days. Current hierarchy from lowest to highest is; Rebel 500D->50D->7D->5DMkII->1D/1Ds
If any one's interested in the specs they seem to be:
18 MP
Dual Digic 4
8 fps
19 AF points all cross type
ISO 6400
3 in LCD
EOS Movie Capture
APS-C
"Artificial Horizon Tilt" Electronic leveler?
63 zone metering
That puts it between the 5D Mark II and the 50D although some features are 'better' than those on the 5D Mark II- It also purportedly has a flash master built in.
APS-C = Cropped Sensor? this is not FF?
It's a 1.6x crop. I also found the name '7D' to be confusing as I thought it would be a 5D successor. But this seems to slot between the 5D and the 50D.
@ MKippen-
Supposedly it's APS-C, I didn't translate the poster but a few sources have. The general impression is that it'll be APS-C, the lenses introduced with it are also APS-C. It's expected to come bundled with the new 15-85 mm APS-C lens, it's hard to make out but that's the lens that seems to be attached to the camera on the poster.
It'll make a high pixel density on an APS-C sensor with 18 megapixels, hopefully with the dual DIGIC 4 chips they'll be able to control the noise levels better. But yeah... I was hoping for a FF also, let's just wait and see what really transpires, some are doubting the authenticity of this poster though with the lens leaks it's seemingly the real deal.
It's definitely not a 5D MII replacement. That it still somewhat hard to keep in stock, even with this economy.
I could see a 50D replacement or it will fill the gap, cause that's a large gap in price between the two mentioned cameras.
It's *maybe* an APS-C - I like to favor the rumor that it's going to be APS-H (1.3 crop) with the ability to use EF-S lenses. That would allow the 18MP sensor to make sense. Putting 15MP on an APS-C for the 50D ended up with a lot of people shouting that they lost image quality from the 10MP 40D, so I have my doubts that they could get a clean 18MP on APS-C. My guess is that it will do super clean 18MP/8fps in APS-H format (close to 5DmkII for landscape/portrait shots) and 8MP/18fps in APS-C (crazy fast and just big enough for sports) with a price closer to the 5DmkII end. Who knows, though - we'll find out on Tuesday :-)
APS-H would be really interesting, but the lens mount seems odd. But I would think that would be really cool.
18MP APS-C could be doable. The 21MP 5DII has better ISO performance than the 1DsMKIII.
Is it really 8fps? I was thinking it would be closer to 6.3 looking at that poster. 8fps @ 18MP w/ APS-H would canibalize the 1DMkIII to no end!!!!! Heck, even if it were APS-C at 8fps the sports shooters would go CRAZY!! I would. Especially in a body that size and that price. Remember it has a mode dial, smaller prism and no grip if the poster is correct.
correction, I meant 12fps at 12MP (APS-H to APS-C), 8MP is what 18MP FF to APS-C would be. Cycomachead, the 8fps sounds right because of the dual DIGIC IVs.
Remember the 1D MK4 is just a stones throw away from launching soon, so although this trumps the 1D MK3 (Love the sound of the new 19 point AF...at LONG last!) , it won't for long.
The 63 is with reference to the zone metering system, I believe. All in all it sounds like a perfect 'poor man's' 1D MK4 as the 5DMK2 is the 'poor man's' 1DS MK3.
I just hope that the video can offer as good quality darks as the 5D Mk2 does and if they threw in variable video frame rates it will be a perfect camera to replace the 40D/50D and will perfectly compliment my 5D MK2.
APS-H would be very interesting! This is pure speculation, but looking at the pictures of the lenses, (supposing the images are to scale with each other) the 15-85mm lens seems to have a larger diameter than the 18-135. This could be to accommodate the APS-H sensor size without too much vignetting. Though this could also be due to the wider angle capabilities of the lens and therefore my rather tenuous wishful thinking would be moot!
I was hoping for a mid-range, lower resolution FF sensor. I have the 5dMK2, but it would be nice to have 18mp combined with the 8FPS and 19 point AF. the AF and fps on the 5dMK2 is slow but managable - i would give up some MP for faster AF and faster FPS. I think that for the fast FF, the 1D is on par with specs, but too expensive.
This is weird, cause an older report seems to have the 7D bundled with an EF 28-135, which would say full frame.
APS-C? Really, on a single-digit model? Shame on you, Canon.
I wish Canon would do what Panasonic and company did with the Micro Four Thirds format: lose the mirror, shrink the body down a ton, give us 24FPS at 1080, etc. The quiet shutter is great. I was shooting a wedding recently and was horrified at how loud the mirror flap can be. I felt like I was farting in church. They could really just lose the mirror completely if they had the guts.
The way things are right now, I'm tempted to ebay off my collection of L series glass and go with Panasonic.
Your argument is kinda contradicting itself isn't it? You don't seem happy with Canon's decision to use a crop sensor, with your range of L lenses I presume you shoot Full Frame, yet you're willing to jump ship to a smaller sensor size than Canon's APS-C with the micro four thirds?
So essentially would you want a FF sensor in a smaller package to use with your L lenses? But then if you lose the mirror, you'd also have to lose the prism and migrate to at the very best an EVF?
@Solid Grey Fox:
I have an XTi and L series glass. I got the low end body because I was dissatisfied with the full frame offerings (and I had a feeling HD video was coming, so I didn't get the 5dmkI which didn't have it). So I waited. The full frame offerings still disappoint: no AF in Live View, only 20fps in 1080p (?!). No tilt-swivel LCD. Weaksauce.
Yes, I want a full frame sensor in a smaller body without the prism. Also while I'm making pony requests, I'd like 24fps in 1080p mode. I don't care about manual focus, it's currently impossible to MF with the APS-C because of the tiny frame, so I'd be happy with the EVF. Having used the Panny GH-1 I can confirm it's actually easier to focus manually with EVF on a 3-inch LCD than with a standard viewfinder.
Very pleased to finally see a 15-something lens. I have the old 24-85 on my film EOS and it's a great focal range - 24mm is useful for buildings (e.g. inside a cathedral) and also mountainscapes. I can't think why they've taken so long to make an EF-S version. Hopefully the telephoto end (which I don't really need) will not make it too heavy.
Why would they release a cropped sensor camera with the same naming scheme as their full frame line? FAKE
They already do, it's called the EOS-1D.
I love Nikon but Canon is really putting the hurt on them. Nikon really needs to quit putting out 5000 different versions of the D40 and cheap kit lenses and get their act together to compete with stuff. I want to stay Nikon but Canon is really making it hard with their last few releases.
This Canon is a response to the D300, so it's Canon playing catchup on this one.
Also look at the D700 -- Canon has nothing to compete with that camera either.
^
The 5D Mark II is almost close in competing the D700, but Canon still don't have anything against the king of semi-pro DSRL, which is the D300.
*DSLR*
damn comment system :(
@xValentine,
You're right about the D300/s having remained uncontensted, at least up until *this* point.
I think the 7D will be a strong response.
The 7D even has some clear advantages over the 5DmkII.
As for the Engadget comment system, yeah it aint the best, but it aint nowhere near as bad as Gizmodo's comment system.
You'll be lucky if they even let you comment at all, and when they do, it'll go through secondary approval process for first page special treatment.
It would be nice for this camera to have a 1.3 crop, have a bridge to the 1D.
Er, the 1D IS a 1.3 crop sensor...
Call it a mini 1D or a D300 competitor.
Everything would be good about this camera except the 18megapixels @ 1.6x crop.
If it was APS-H, would 8 megapixels really be final MP for a EF-S lens? the difference is 1.3x vs 1.6x, not 1x vs 1.6x.. I would think the MP would be higher - somethign closer to the 10-12 range
Am i crazy?
AAAAAAAA! My 400D shakes in its roots! o_O
Dual Digic 4's,.. 63 zone meter,.. Interesting Unit. I recall a patent for a new focus system a while back.
5DmII footage here:

you photog geeks are awesome! I love you all!
the smaller the series no. the better.. 1D, 5D, 50D... 7D may not be better than 5D.. imho
Has anyone noticed the new EF-S 15-85mm which is supposedly USM doesn't have the gold 'ultrasonic' ring around the front?

Aaaa! I'm torn! I don't know whether to go for this newer 1.6x APS-C 7D or a bit older FullFrame 5D MKII. :(
I'll wait for the 1Ds MKIV :D
@ Sysphus: Yes, and that's what I DID mention in my comment. But I guess for you, price of something is the only factor determining how good or bad it is. I owned that lens til I get the "top-end" f1.2 - stil f1.8 is better value for money, for most of the people not into pro-photography. But anyways, it's difficult to reach some of the engadget audience. I should know better.
