Hey, our main dudes over at Joystiq sat down with Xbox's Aaron Greenberg recently, and there are some great bits of info in the interview. Aaron says the
big Xbox price cut has been planned for months, so it's "just a coincidence" that it happened right on top of the PS3 Slim -- and he also says he's an avid Joystiq reader, so if Redmond had wanted to get the jump on Sony,
they'd have been prepared. Other nuggets: the $99 WiFi adapter isn't coming down in price, the Netflix relationship is going well, and getting Hulu or Amazon Unbox on the 360 is like "asking out a really hot chick on a date, they don't all say yes." Yeah, it's a pretty great interview -- hit the read link for the whole thing.
So why isnt wifi built in, and why is the adapter so overpriced?
i read the headline, looked at giant forehead man and thought: so hulu on 360 is never going to happen?
Nice interview, +1 to Joystiq for directly asking about the PS3!
(also, he sure likes using "you know" in the interview, ha ha)
microsoft is in big trouble now with the ps3 slim!
maybe when Natal comes out they will redesign the 360 with internal wi-fi, a expandable HDD (like ps3) and some MKV support.
Hulu's probably a gold-digger anyway (you know what I mean). Then how about PBS online? Since Netflix was introduced to Xbox online, I haven't been using the 360 for games much, but I want more!
"Aaron says the big Xbox price cut has been planned for months, so it's "just a coincidence" that it happened right on top of the PS3 Slim"
Wow, what are the odds on that? That was an astronomical coincidence!
That headline's just sad/
Amazon? Ok. I could see why you wouldn't be too interested. But Hulu. Come on. Hulu. It would gut the ps3, especially with Hulu being less and less ps3 friendly these days.
Oh and wifi... you know why that POS is so expensive? It's an 802.11a adapter. Nobody uses 11a. They barely make any routers that support 11a but 802.11a adapters are way more expensive. Drop 11a from the adapter and MS should be able to make the frakking thing for a lot cheaper and sell it for a much more reasonable $40 and still make some scratch. Gigabit would be a nice add on that few people could use but more could use that then they could 11a.
so, if i'm going to get hulu on my xbox?!
i would hope so, because i have a hot girlfriend whom i ask out frequently....
I thought the headline meant its embarrassing to do in the vicinity of unsupportive friends.
wait a minute... you mean the 360 doesn't even have wifi without an adapter?
Considering that this is the Xbox 360, it's more like the quarterback of the football team asking the hot chick out. She ALWAYS says yes.
...unless you throw loads of money at her
Lat time a hot chick spoke to him SNES was the latest thing.
Death to wifi connected consoles in all competitive FPSes!
As a former owner of the wifi adapter, I cannot emphasize enough how large of an improvement you see ingame by switching to ethernet.
Exactly, and that's not even considering all the benefits of ethernet when streaming media from your pc or home server.... I applaud Microsoft for not including wifi into their console.
considering from what I read in comments that MS's wi-fi adapter is 802.11 a, it's going to be hella slow regardless
outdated wi-fi standards (which cost extra)
outdated disc media standards and no move to make a blu-ray equivalent of their HD-DVD adapter... they've had over a year now
they should drop the price by $200 bucks
The best part about that quote alongside that photo is that it makes Aaron Greenberg look like he followed up that "hot chick" line with "Yeaaahhh"
The WiFi adapter is $99? are you kidding me? I could buy enough cat5 to wire my whole house with that.
Or get a powerline ethernet kit.
Yeah, this is one area where I think MS is being greedy and stupid. Personally, it's not a big deal to me; My Xbox 360 is about five feet away from my router. But it's a bummer they can't be civil about this and not gouge us.
Same with the hard drive. No way in hell is a standard SATA hard drive with "special formatting" worth the dramatically high mark-up. They're being quite nasty about that aspect of their marketing, and I really, really hate it.
But I love my 360 anyway.
the powerline stuff is no good I hear.
That's what a rag and a bottle of chloroform are for.
THey keep the hard drive less SKU for so people can have a cheap option to repurchase an xbox when their first, second or third xbox dies out of warranty.
T-That.. forehead..
My god it could flag down a plane if shined up enough.
It's ridiculous that they're not going to lower the price of the wireless adapter.
And they should work harder to get HuLu on the XBox.
I love my 360, but I purchased a launch system. 3rd system technically (1 RRoD, the one they sent me back sounded like a helicopter) and if this one goes I don't know if I'll get another 360. HDDs are way to expensive, I bought a 20gb when I could, core system. At this point though the 360 is not the cheaper option. Sucks though, I have a bunch of great XBLA games.
I gotta say I own 2 360's and have 2 Gold accounts. My boy and I own several games and frequently buy games via Live however, The PS3 is starting to hold sway. We had one 360 die out of warranty, bought another it died 2 months ago, sent in for repair and now the DVD drive is dying. I know without a doubt I will be sending in the 2nd 360 getting it back and selling it, canceling the 2nd Live account and getting a PS3.
So getting Netflix on 360 includes a restraining order? I don't see the parallel.
I have a REALLY hot girl, so I don't know WTF Aaron Greenberg is talking about. He SHOULD have said "Hulu on the 360 is like I, Aaron Greenberg, asking a hot chic out on a date.
Wish they would've asked why we never got a browser for it. A full browser with flash would let me get rid of my htpc
