Zune HD pamphlet discloses HD movies coming to Zune marketplace
With TV shows, music video, and video podcasts already proliferating the Zune marketplace, it was really only a matter of time before Microsoft dipped its toes into HD movies -- not to mention kind of a logical step since Xbox Live was getting its movie section Zune-branded. BostonPocketPC writer Steven Hughes has uploaded pictures of an alleged pamphlet handed out at Best Buy's Zune HD showings that, among other things, make reference to finding Zune Marketplace content including HD movies. Ban on HDTV Media Center recordings notwithstanding, things are looking up for Zune 4.0 software. And here we thought Apple was late to the party with its movie service.

Nice. Are we talking rentals or purchases? I wonder what sort of quality we're talking about too... probably low bitrate 720p?
I wonder if this is covered with Zune Pass?
I'm really looking forward to the Zune HD.
The interface is really nice.
It would be nice if it included like 3 free rentals a month.
Does this also mean that Xbox 360 Marketplace and Zune marketplace will be the same for Music + Video?
Since we are on the topic of Xbox 360 and Zune HD, I have another Q, does the Zune HD play HD movies over Xbox 360? (or) only through the AV Dock? anyone know the answer..?
Zune is taking over for Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace. Music will still be on the PC only. Music Videos will be Zune.
This would be good with the LoveFilm style business model where you pay a monthly fee to have 1/2/3 etc (depending how much you pay) films downloaded and available to play at any time but can simply remove them and watch as many different films per month as you want as long as you stick to that limit - that would be fantastic (and possible with the Zune's DRM system which works with subscription based music).
Would be nice to go round a mate's house on film night and take your zune with you and just stream the download through the zune's wireless to watch the film instantly (as long as you have sufficient bandwidth).
That particular model wont work. At all.
I can see a select number of rentals (three is the magic number for Zune) being included in some sort of subscription, hopefully the current one with no additional charge.
The major problem with the system you described is cost. No one would buy it at $10+ a month, since you can get Netflix for about that. However, they wouldnt be able to support the royalties on such a system if they didnt charge more than $10. Using the current $15 plan with something like three rentals a month would allow them to cover there expense, profit, and still be low enough for consumers to use.
Well what else would you run on that thing....? Pirated HD videos off Pirate Bay....? Nah, that'd never work.
hey care to share your ip address? : )
Haha what is Pirate Bay still up? I thought it was shut down?
@Ahmad
Or you could just get your movies in or convert them to WMV HD, keep the surround sound, and play them from your xbox using Windows Media Player's media sharing.
Wasn't this basically confirmed with Zune Video Marketplace replacing the current Video Marketplace on Xbox Live. They wouldn't replace the current live marketplace with an inferior product. They also advertised "Instant on 1080P" on live. It seems to me they could bring that to the PC as long as the content owners allow it. No doubt Silverlight 3.0 technology is being used for the 1080P streaming and is probably the UI backbone of the latest 360 UI.
How about Netflix streaming movies? After all, the XBox 360 has it..What do you think?
That would be awesome if you can output it through the dock while streaming. They should totally do that!
Can nVidia Tegra do HD video streaming at least at 720P? If do, I would be extremely happy and fully utilize it and replace my iPhone 3GS and Laptop, Xbox video streaming center.
Think about it, using only USB 5W power for HD video streaming. XBOX is more than 150W my notebook PC max 90W. Zune HD Streaming PLZ!!!
I hope this is true, but I don't recall seeing this at my Best Buy. They just had pamphlets for the HD Radio. I got a t-shirt out of it though. :)
It's legit, I got one
I initially put two and two together in the Zunited.net article. I think HD Movies marketplace woudl be a great addition. No word yet on whether they ar to rent or buy. I want to assume both but im not sure.
Is it 1080p? Can the ZUNE HD even do 1080p? If it can, then I might get one.
It's been said a billion times in all the Zune posts here that the Zune can output smooth 720p max though the HDMI (so no 1080) - to be honest it is a portable media player, so 720p output through HDMI is very good and 1080 would be a bit of overkill (plus would take a LOT of storage space to carry 1080 res films around).
I guess its still good, I mean that's why you have a PS3 right? I just wish the screen wasn't a crappy 480*272, but rather a nice 800*450 which is 16:9 also. It could use the same 800*480 panel found in phones and just cut 15 pixels from top and bottom for 16:9 affect.
If they upped the screen resolution the price would shoot really high on the unit - it is OLED after all and so very expensive (and i guess again the power usage would eat up battery, so having a lower screen resolution = more battery and lower cost).
The movies from the Zune Marketplace will be 720p, so the Zune has the ability to output them to your TV via the dock. Additionally, when you purchase a movie from the ZM you also get the 1080p from the ZVM on the Xbox and vice-versa. That's pretty sweet. I just hope they integrate this into Windows Media Center. On Windows 7 it has a movie library so they should let you get the 1080p copy on your PC as well that way you can watch, output, or stream from you desktop or laptop.
You see, since I wont hook this up to my TV for HD Movies since I have a PS3, the lower res kills it. Hence an Omnia 2, Touch HD/Pro2/Diamond2/Leo is much better for me.
"It could use the same 800*480 panel found in phones and just cut 15 pixels from top and bottom for 16:9 affect."
NO, it couldn't, those are crappy LCD's. The Zune HD uses an active matrix OLED panel.
@Cheesus
The Zune is not a phone ffs, I don't care what phone you want. We are talking PMPs.
oh crap this is awesome I can't rent or buy movies on iTunes :-/
I would care more if the damn thing could hold a decent amount. HD on 32gigs just aint' gonna cut it.
There will be a 64 GB soon, especially if Apple announces one for the iPod Touch.
There are no current plans for a 62GB model. The only models of Zune HD are 16GB and 32GB.
I agree with you about it being too small.
You're right, there are no plans for a 62 model.
it should, at the least, match my 120gig Zune. anything less is a downgrade, no matter how slick the interface is.
then point your browser on Zune HD to Ponhhub HD
At least two people want Zune HDs. Wow!
Its funny, in the title he says - 'discloses the info' hah!
Yea, of course windows wants the custumer to know!
Looking more and more enticing. If it has OSX support I'll get one. If not.. fuck em.
This was pretty much a given, after it was announced before E3 that the Zune Marketplace would be taking over the Video Marketplace on the Xbox 360. Hopefully nearly all the content is shared accross both platforms, since the Xbox has television shows, movies, and music videos. It'll be nice to pay for something once, and have access to it on both devices.
If zune had more codec support (Dvix/Xvix Ogg, Flac,) and supported MSC connections I would get one.
I wonder if these sorts of files could be easily converted through the Zune or other software.
Finally! Movies. Now if only we could just get ABC and more CBS content up there...
The Zune UI, plus 64gb flash, plus the codec support of a Cowon player= dream media player.
Can't wait to see this go forward. Looks like they are making a come back makes me all tosbowner inside. Shall see what's next ont he movie spectrum.
I actually have this pamphlet, but I assumed there had to be HD movies so I didn't think it was news. I mean, they did announce theat the Zune Marketplace on Xbox would have instant 1080p.
