Canon EOS 7D video specs get detailed
Canon's seemingly imminent EOS 7D DSLR may still not be fully official just yet, but there's certainly no end to the leaks these days, with the camera's complete video specs only the latest to surface. Assuming this latest rumor is on the mark, it looks like you can expect to get your choice of 24, 25 or 30 fps video at full 1080p, or 50 or 60 fps at 720p, along with an external mic, full manual controls (though not continuous focus, it seems), some in-camera editing options and, of course, and HDMI out port for some big screen viewing. What's left to know? A price and release date, for starters -- but hopefully Canon itself will clear those details up (and confirm the rest) before too long.

err crop sensor and its called a 7d?? wtf canon!
The D700 has a full frame sensor, and yet it doesn't have a single digit name either. Names don't matter much in product advertising anymore, or at least, they don't stick to the old "code" which allowed you to instantly know the worth of the product.
While we're on video, imagine the same framerates and resolutions with the light capabilities of the D700 (the D700s that's hopefully to appear soon).
1D doesn't have a FullFrame sensor either.
This is not a successor to the 50D nor is it a successor to the 5DII. It's carving out a new niche to go against the D300s. Reviewers were always having a hard time comparing the xxD to the Dxxx series because the Dxxx was better in just about every regards, but at $400+ difference, you really couldn't compare the two. That's like saying the Canon xxD is better than the Canon xxxD, yes, but the price difference makes it comparing apples to oranges.
@Richard
I was wondering about that. Since the 5D Mark II came out not too long ago I couldn't imagine they were replacing it already. Well that makes me happy, maybe I'd be able to afford this one then :)
Rumors currently have the price somewhere around $1699 to $2000. If this is true and it performs well, it will be the new gold standard for shoestring filmmakers.
Dont say video... Thats a dirty word to a lot of engadget goers who love their DSLR's. (roll eyes)
Like many others labeling DSLR's as "poor" for photography, they quickly forget that most compensate for rolling shutter, and most have optics that would put a $6,000 Dedicated video setup to shame. I honestly hate the barrage of naysayers on here. Look at RED, marketing a convergence device, why deny whats obvious about the direction the DSLR market is moving?
The current gold standard for dSLRs for video is the GH-1. Primarily because its low rolling-shutter artifact and impressive all around performance. Not to mention stop-less aperture, full seamless AF during video, and support for every lens under the sun due to its short focal flange distance.
However, this camera supporting 24p & 60p could become something amazing, especially if it doesn't do 3:2 pulldown like the GH1 in 1080.
how do you think it will compare to panasonics avccam at $2k? which is better for video? I think panasonic's camera, no?
@ian mcgrady
For video (industrials, weddings, ect) the panasonic. For making movies (short and feature films) the Canon.
As a photography reading this is reading spec porn.
And for all those whiners that talk about too many mp. That's what the SRAW's are for! I can't see why anyone would need less detail in their shots. Also they mention how there is a new AF system based on the 19 af point 1d and a new sensor that has great low light handling.
If this camera lands for under 2000$ (getting ready for the hate)
It will own the d300s in every possible way (again.. too many mp haters wait till the pictures come out and judge then.
A lot depends on the performance factors that aren't decided from a spec sheet. How good the video is, how easy to use, what the still image high ISO noise is like. As the latest dSLR in its class to come down the pipe, it will the greatest thing for about 3-6 months until something better comes along.
I still feel that *outside of the video* there isn't very much being offered in these new cameras that couldn't be found on the older models at much less cost i.e. there is a premium being asked for video which people only interested in still photography might be well advised not to pay...
raising the mp on a small sensor causes allsorts of issues which currently degrade image quality, not boost it. leica have the right idea by augmenting the sensor size. we should be aiming for mf sensors in out slrs whilst keeping the relatively low size and ergonomics of current ff digis the future is in bigger surface are and multiple sensors not in high mp 20ish on full frame and 12 on dx is more than enough. Not to mention lens resolution even on the most exotic glass isnt going to keep up with the cameras soon that and the quality of light degrading over distance through atmospheric noises like refraction and dust etc means that most photography wont benifit from added mp.
there is a future in all types of sensor sizes because they all serve different purposes... but the only way to keep making giant steps is to keep upping the sensor size.... i would love a 5000mp/gigapixle large format camera that you can focus then take landscape shot and see detail on the trees in the background haha.....pointless as that sounds imaging it in advertising a billboard thats rests at its native dpi and res :D

While I recognize that the 7D shows an EF-S lens attached. I still haven't seen any clear indication of which format this camera captures. It's possible to create an EF-S compatible APS-H or full frame camera (accepting that there will be vignetting).
I can't be the only one hoping for an APS-H.
it's a 1.6 crop like a rebel.
I still haven't seen any information to that effect.
APS-H aren't supported in EF-S lenses; since EF-S lenses only projects a 1.6X image circle.
EF-S lenses plastered all over the promo material, as well as the high speeds, should pretty much settle it, unless Canon are on a path of deliberate deception with these leaks.
It's supposed to be 1.45x
The sensor size is in the leaked press release:
"Image sensor size is 22.3 × 14.9 mm, shooting angle is equivalent to about 1.6 times lens focal length. "

they better give these new video options to the 5d mkII in an firmware update or there's gonna be hell to pay.
Canon won't be paying for that hell. Consumers will - and that's perfectly fine for Canon.
Agreed *grabs pitchfork* Who's with me? Hell, we yelled loud enough about manual exposure control for video and Canon delivered, they better give us some damn 24/25fps.
i wish i hadn't bought a camera a few years ago, now I don't think i can justify the purchase of another 1000 dollar camera for atleast another couple years. I guess i could give up drinking for a couple of week....nah...hahaha
what!?!? don't even play like that. that's not funny at all. give up drinking, never...
Anyone heard if it's going to be SD or CF or both?
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THAT THIS MEANS THERE WILL BE A 5D MKII FIRMWARE UPDATE!!!!
there's no way canon can release a cheaper camera like this with more options than the 5d has. they can't undercut their sales like that. i expect to hear about an update for 24p and audio controls ASAP from canon
With only one Digic engine I would not count on it.
BTW - I just installed the last 'video' firmware and I'm really enjoying it, the shutter speed and ISO in particular.
I dig the 5dmii for BOTH photography and the occasional stunning HD clip.

They did it a couple years ago when they released new features in a rebel (100 series) that the current ten series camera didn't have until it was updated. So it's not out of the realm of possibility that Canon will 1up itself with newer features on a cheaper camera.
Still black and bulky. Everything has changed in this world except the look of SLR cameras, same as 30-40 years ago. Industrial designers definitely needed!
Well remember that the human body hasn't changed in that period of time either. We don't all want to be shooting with tiny cameras that have buttons we have to press with our finger nails.
That's wrong. Look at a Nikon FM2 and compare it to a modern DSLR. Huge difference (not necessarily for the better IMHO...). But luckily these cameras are black. I mean the silver Digital Rebel? Oh my god was that an ugly camera. Though the olive green Pentax K-m...
DSLRs are not iPods.
It doesn't need a design overhaul every 2 years or so.
OH DEAR GOD! 24p at 1080, full MANUAL CONTROLS?!
ME WANTS SO BAD!
* calls bank regarding second mortgage *
ummm, this is a STILL camera right? What kind of moron would by an SLR for video use...
No, this is a VDSLR. Welcome to the new world where the only morons are those that don't realize SLR's ARE the new video cameras.
@michael
please, don't be a douche. What photographer is going to buy a dSLR BECAUSE it has video, and what videographer is going to buy a dSLR instead of a video cam. But you go ahead and use your VdSLR (doubtful you have one) to make your summer blockbuster there Scorsese.
By the way do you use a knife to open a can of chili? You probably hunted high and low, searched the can opener forums for months to find a knife that had a can opener attachment.
@Phil: This videographer? http://searchingforsonny.com/ Or this one? http://www.professionalphotographer.co.uk/Magazine/Latest-Issue/Richard-Jobson-Canon-5D-MKII-Short-Films-Flykiller Or this one? http://staging.vimeo.com/groups/canon5dmarkiipro/videos/5000009 (Ralph Lauren commercial)
Or these? http://staging.vimeo.com/groups/canon5dmarkiipro/videos
There are tons of videographers/directors shooting shorts, music videos, tv ads, and soon probably feature films on their 5D Mk II. I've seen photojournalists using the video features too.
Also have a look at http://vimeo.com/5981422 You can see a video shot with a Panasonic GH1, a 5D Mk II and a Red One (which is used for motion pictures, e.g. Steven Soderbergh shot Ché with it). You can hardly see a difference between the cameras. If you'd mix in a professional VIDEO camera you could definitely see the difference, unless you use a 35mm converter box, and I doubt the image quality will be as good with the video camera. So unless you can afford a Red One or the much more expensive digital alternatives, or 35mm film which is very expensive too, you have to shoot with a DSLR.
@kadajawi
It's pointless. The guys obviously a troll, look at his username. It's clear he doesn't understand anything about video cameras, cinematography or even pro still photographers who are venturing into video.
The luddites on this site make me laugh! :P
You can't prevent the progression of technology and cross-fertilisation of features, all video does is provide additional flexibilty to a photographers arsenal. If you choose not to use it, fine, but those with the creativity to realise the potential of new features will take photography/videography into new realms. Video shooting on DSLR's have their own unique positives and negatives, if you are aware of the limitations you can work around them and use your camera to show the world around us in a new light.
If people like this worked for the car industry we'd be still going around on horse and carts.
whatever, all those examples are "novelty" examples. No one will use this as a real tool for video, sorry. You all can think what you want, but it's the wrong tool for the job. The dSLR video function offers nothing new or any creative "advantage" over a purpose built HD camera. I would also argue that anyone who is looking to "show the world in a new light" will be looking at more advanced tech like 4K cameras from Red not some $1200 SLR with a video setting. The fact that you are all saying "gee if it offered constant focus, I'd be all over it..." tells me that it is not a serious video tool.
You can argue your points but Michael is right, it's pointless because you are wrong, and Solid Gray Fox, give me a break, I am as bleeding edge as anyone on this blog, I just use the right tool for the job. I am a still photographer, so I use my dSLR to take pictures not my Sony hd camcorder, thats used for video, because it the right tool for that job.
Now leave me alone Milton Berle is on the two way tonight.
Wake me up when the new video DSLR camera's have continuous full time focus and internal mic PLUS still take great pictures.
Interesting reading about the 7D

Video-wise, this is the BEST dSLR out there, if the rumors about the frame rates are true. While the cam won't have the best possible quality compared to the 5D, when it comes to video, its frame rate support outweigh any such problems.
So, as long as this cam has the same manual controls as the 5D in video mode, the same bitrate, the same audio-in, and the reported fps, this will be the BEST video dSLR in the market today.
It will only be THE BEST if you give a rats ass about 24p. Obviously you do, and we hear it from you incessantly.
SO this is basically a 50D with video capability. I am so disappointed that they didn't go 1.3 or full frame with it. SInce I'm a photographer and not a videographer, I guess there's no reason to upgrade. Am I wrong on that?
Well, other than the rumored feature list: 19-point AF, 63-zone metering, onboard flash commander for Speedlites, 100% viewfinder, and 8 FPS, it's kinda-sorta-maybe "just like" a D50.
I'm just excited there might be a reason to upgrade from my 20D.
Full frame would have likely cost more and meant competition (and therefore lower sales) to the 5d mk II.
This camera sounds like it will be great.
Rip the mirror out and fit a PL mount somebody.
5D MK IIs are being used for video professionally on features and commercials.
Get use to it.
Video on SLRs is here to stay and is only going to get much, much bigger.
