Nokia's 32GB Alvin RM-559 hits FCC, Simon 561 and Theodore 563 nowhere to be found
Nokia's latest mystery device to hit the FCC, the RM-550 "Alvin," holds itself in some good company given the known specs. Its 32GB internal memory is matched only by Espoo's other flagship devices N97 and N900, and it's also got the same BL-5J battery as the aforementioned pseudo-MID. Throw in quad-band GSM, tri-band WCDMA, Bluetooth, and WiFi, and you've got our interests piqued. The confidentiality agreement of the filing gives no indication of when we might hear more details, but we're gonna go ahead and start preparing ourselves mentally for yet another resistive touchscreen.

In before the Nokia fanboys who claim that there's nothing wrong with resistive screens. Deluded fools.
Keep telling it like it is, Ross! I respect you! You too, Darren! Oh, and you too, Chris(although he's a Nokia fanboy)!
@ILoveApple
fuck that I live in jersey and when it gets cold. IT GETS COLD. Therefore a resistive screen is better for a good 3 months
You, Ross Miller and seemingly most of Engadget, have got to be kidding. You're acting just incredibly stupid. Get over yourselves. Your constant whining and bitching about this one technology is making you look less and less intelligent.
Both technologies have their advantages. You honestly can't figure out the advantages in resistive technology? Try making detailed drawings, mathematical calculations or editing Excel cells with a capacitive one.
A great deal of people also live in a cold climate for many months in a year. Resistive technology operates well in cold temperatures and you can use it with your slim gloves on. Well ok, with capacitive you can always use your nose tip if you have gloves on.
Resistive also offers much more options for game developers and developers in general. Think of all the DS games if they were designed for only finger use.. ugh..
And one last thing: latest Nokia resistive touch screens ARE well enough responsive. On many occasions capacitive can be too responsive: sometimes you select icons which you didnt intend to, just because your finger mistakenly touched the surface.
iLoveApple, I personally find iPhone a bit hard to use since it doesn't react when it touch it using my fingernail. Personally I would say that sensitive resistive screen is superior to capacitive (especially if it has multi touch which isn't impossible anymore).
Sweet, Ross. You can prepare yourself for Nokia's resistive screens to outsell any capacitive screen in the European, Indian and Chinese markets as well then.
Honestly, give it up. No-one cares about your two-handed bricks that require excellent word prediction just to make them useful and as a result completely fuck up your typing if you want to put anything slightly esoteric in.
someone in Nokia really loves the chipmunks
That headline is funny.
could this be the n97 mini?
E72 Large?
Both wrong.. it's the n91 "Porridge". Just right.
It's the i69 love edition.
Nokia's phones have great hardware (for the most part) and a potentially successful new Os, Maemo. All they need to work on is the designs of their Nseries phones, which have been seriously lacking in quality.
How about something different then the usually glossy, plastic, cheap looking designs?
The E-series is the only line-up with great design and quality, while keeping the price reasonably low.
Yet another N95/N85/N86 variant?
It will be announced on Sep 15.
if it has touch screen i hope it's not resistive cuz it suck
i loved that show when i was a kid
Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to gray
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on
You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee you go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And I don't need no carryin' on
Because you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Will you need a blue sky holiday?
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on
You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
(Oooh.. a holiday..)
Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong
(yeah...)
So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Dude...
Du du tititi du.
For those who didn't get the reference... This song was in Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Doesn't matter how nice the make the phone, OVI store is horrible , its full of just garbage. Most decent apps are scattered across the net, if they could fix that, it would be nice. Also Nokia has a habbit of cranking out handset after handset but not caring at all about the software/firmware.
Whats a real shame, is the nokia beta blog! what a useless waste of time, they should direct those workers to instead fix firmware and design decent apps, not junk.
I wish Nokia would hire me, I would clean up the place before they go bankrupt. You can't just keep spending all this cash making mroe handsets without putting more into them. Plenty of nokia handsets are out there, they should knock it down to maybe 5 or 6 a year
You got it all figured out, huh?
I read on Eldar Murtazin's twitter or livejournal or whatever that Nokia is planning to also release an E-Series phone based on Symbian 5th Edition. Portrait touchscreen and QWERTY?
Nokia World is on tomorow so at least we won't be kept waiting too long.
So far, I found that it does have quadband GSM, WCDMA 900,1900,2100(hint at either ATT or unlocked offering in the US?) and has bluetooth and WiFi....i have also not seen any indication on whether it is a resistive or capacitive touch screen. Overall still pretty awesome.
It is amazing what you can find out by looking through the FCC files.
The article already told us all that.
Yeah, could be the new Exx communicator.
Nokia should make resistive AND capacitive screen phones. I love capacitive screens. I would never buy a resistive screen phone = I would never buy a Nokia touchscreen phone. For this time Nokia had luck and get my money for the N86, but next time I will definetly buy a touchscreen phone and it could be Nokia if they invet capacitive screens.
Exel on such a display? Never - go buy a netbook?
Better games on resistive scfeens?? Realy?? Look in the Apple appstore before saying this!
Excel editing on-the-go is a big deal for many. Naturally you dont do HEAVY Excel work on a mobile phone, no-one's that masochistic. But for many, who need a pocketable mobile office, light Excel editing is a great feature to have.
Apple App Store games are simply incredible, I aint denying that. But yes, you CAN make better games on resistive screens since you have more space for developer's imagination. Resistive offers more options. Take Nintendo DS games for example. Many of the games are so great for the fact that you can operate them with the stylus. Fingers simply have too much surface area.
You can achieve the Apple appstore gameplay with a resistive screen since resistive is finger friendly and responsive. The reason App Store has hundreds of amazing games has nothing do with capacitive technology. The reason is Apple's ingenious eco system.
Alvin and the chipmunks?
i think those trio are music phones.....
I love all the nitwits and Apple trolls and Nokia haters that have owned 2+ year old resistive touch screen phones then went to the I-phone and suddenly want to push that experience on everyone else in their statements like:
"I would never buy a resistive phone"
This person has likely never used a modern resistive phone from Nokia. I can type just as fast on my Nokia 5800 XM (maybe faster) then I ever could on my Iphone 3g, no stupid auto correction required.
"Capacitive is way better, I don't understand why Nokia doesn't get it"
See above, except that I can do it with gloves on, with 1 hand, or with a pen, stylus, plectrum, random office gadget. Really useful when your trying to input data into fields way too complex for gumby finger interaction. Ever tried writing an equation, working a spreadsheet, doing a quick drawing (like annotating a map)? Yeah, you think picture editing works well on the Iphone, you should give it a shot on a Nokia with a stylus, it works great! (especially since you can select a finer point then your finger).
"Nokia's App store is nothing compared to my Apple! I need an App store"
I guess Nokia must appeal to a more intelligent audience, that's the only conclusion I can come up with. You do realize that the Ovi store is just one of 1000s of places Nokia users are able to download software. We also are able to do this with no input, censoring, or back door bullshit from our phone manufacturer or telco. No jail breaking, rooting, ect required. Someone wants to make an App for a nokia phone? Do it, and sell it, and you don't even need Apples permission *gasp*
I'm not saying capacitive screens and let's just say it, Iphones, don't have some advantages, they do. There are some things being developed to allow other things to interface with Capacitive screens, but nothing is out there yet, so until then... we want our resistive screens, no one is saying you need to buy one, but seriously, quit acting like your Iphone owning, App store downloading ass is the only one that uses Touch screen phones.
There's a reason why Nokia sells more XM 5800's in 6 months (Iphone isn't even top 3 world wide) then Apple has sold I-phones of any model ever, many asian countries use handwriting recognition for a variety of reasons on their handsets. You want to try writing Kanji using your goober, yuppie she-man fingers on your Iphone?
You guys are like Jehova's Fing Witnesses, we don't want your capacitive screens! Are we going to burn in Apple hades for it? Fine! At least I'll die knowing I had a job that didn't involve maxing out my credit card to by gay looking berets and starbucks coffee typing as loud as I can on my Mac book so people notice how much of an "author" I am.
