Samsung Application Store announced, the mobile mall gets a little more crowded
Oh, look, it's another place to buy bite-sized mobile apps, this one courtesy of Samsung. The company isn't exactly new to the whole application store thing, launching a little outlet for Nokia users earlier this year, but piggy-backing on someone else's platform and boldly blazing a trail of iFart knockoffs on your own hardware are two very different things. The imaginatively named Samsung Application Store launches on September 14 for British, French, and Italian Omnia and I8910 HD handsets, later coming to the Omnia II and OmniaLITE as well as users in various other nations. Samsung is pledging "over 300" apps to start, while partners like Electronic Arts, Capcom, Gameloft, and TAITO have signed on for the fun. Omnia BUST-A-MOVE, anyone?

Well this is sure to make an iphone killer happen.
So?
Consumer choice is something to roll our eyes at now?
Yeah, utter futility is often funny. You need a serious critical mass of users or a major technical or business advantage to make something like this worth any developer's time. Samsung makes some nice phones, but this is a complete waste of everyone's time.
yea, nothing like having yet another api to work with! yay!
whatever happened to java??? wouldn't that make things easier?
@ doors: lol!
Do I want a common API? Yes.
Do I want Java? Absolutely not.
I'll take .NET CF/MonoTouch any day of the week.
cool, i hope there will be lots of free stuff for my omnia hd :)
its gonna suck. samsung makes wanna be smartphones,
Omnia 2, Omnia HD, Omnia pro.
all are better that the iPhone by large. like a lot better. a lot. in every way.
The only way they are not: resistive touchscreen.. which is marvelous at a big size and super intuitive. (you stupid Win Mo haters)
And the other one.. HD didn't have apps for it..
Now it does. So I am happy to say iPhone is not the best anymore.
Because to make your iPhone god you need to jailbreak it. And since you are going that way anyway, there is so much more illegal soft for Win Mo..
@quakersface
The mere existence of a Samsung app store does not make it comparable to the juggernaut that is the Apple app store. For that you'd need tons and tons of apps, and many of very high quality.
It's funny that you mention the lack of capacitive screens, because that's probably the very first feature I'd look for in a touch screen device. I'm sorry, but I've done that dance back in the 90's and it was teh suck. I'll NEVER go back to that stylus crap!
samsung make me laugh!!!!!!! hahahahaha
The idea of a company that is solely a handset maker (in the cell phone market), creating their own App store, is seriously retarded. Money from the Chaebol must be flowing like water.
People don't want to admit it but because the iPhone is so successful, all other handset makers are scrambling to catch up. However the only people that seem to be doing it right are Palm, and Google.
OMG... look at that bandwagon! It's fracking huge!
So many app stores now, yet I can still remember downloading apps on my old sidekick 2 and I want to say the first one had an app store as well. Competition is good, though I can't really think of too many successful Samsung phones out there that would really make a difference.

And that's not even a smartphone.
so now we'll have to see who has the best apps when looking to buy a phone. that could take forever. for now though we can stick with the the iphone for that.
Does anyone have an idea when the Samsung Omnia 2 might be launching in the US?
They should just call it SAS but said as a word and not individual letters, much more catchy
You can tell this is app store going to suck just by looking at the horrible aesthetics of the placeholder page. It reminds me of "Welcome To My Home Page!!!" circa 1993. All it needs are the little flashing construction cones.
Why not give us a date to "Visit us again"? Or better yet, just redirect to samsung.com until they have actual content.
