Remember that time you installed Windows XP before it even hit the market? Remember how your AGP video card would only display a maximum resolution of 800 x 600 and your audio card would only emit bleeps and bloops? Ah, those were the days. Quite a bit has happened since XP landed to wash away the awful stain that was Windows ME, though it's still no shock to hear that new operating systems leave more than a few applications broken. Over the past few days, we've
seen oodles of gripes from across the web from loyal Mac users who just can't believe
Snow Leopard has borked their favorite software, but we're wondering how things have been on your machine. Have you realized that your
Optimus Maximus no longer boogies with OS X 10.6? Are you bummed that iStat pro isn't giving you the details it used to? What kind of hell has broken loose since you threw caution in the garbage and updated your machine?
iphoto wont work if it's not geniune
not true for me, i pirated '09 the month it came out and i'm running it with SL just fine.
Shame on you!
Just when I though Danger data lost sage was the worst can happen to consumers.....
Where can I keep my data forever, safe?
Glims (Safari Addon / Plugin) isn't working :(
Solution: Use a better browser.
... reminds me... why can't I choose the default search engine that I want? I use Google UK, but Safari 4 only uses Google.
Great bit of "functionality" there Apple!
I still think that Snow Leopard looks like Steve Jobs, just without glasses.
Yea, so it eats monkey.
Do you mean cancer-ridden and worthless???
Am I the only one that gets reminded by this?

My MacBook 13 gets over heated a lot; and FlashPlayer Safari plugin seems to be hogging much of CPU. I did an update to snow-leopard not clean install.
that's the same for everyone, blame adobe
@Matty: Blame Adobe? But I'm sure the comment from Satish is supposed to be a comparison of pre vs post Snow Leopard, meaning Flash in Safari is taking up more processing than it was before the update. Also I thought Safari ran differently with Snow Leopard, which might be a more direct explanation than "blame Adobe."
As always, I could be wrong...
Often I put the MacBook in the Fridge for about 3-4 minutes when it gets too hot. I am not kidding, Serious. It works for me though,. I wish there was a Safari/Adobe fix for the Flash problem.
I didnt think Adobe had any 64bit plugins out or any of the OS's???? Am i wrong?
i really dont recommend putting your computer in the fridge.. if it condensates at all you can do some real damage
Satish... I put my macbook in the freezer once. Went outside to mow the lawn and wash the car, finished up and went back to my room. My macbook was missing. Oh SHIIIII! is basically what happened. Gutted the thing as fast as I could, was able to de thaw it and it runs great to this day!
everything is good for me except medialink, which makes me shed a single tear, just playing files off of a portable hd in the mean time
fyi, check with this before upgrading if you care to: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
@Josh
Thanks for providing the link. I doubt that most of the people here thought of checking their software first to see if it would work with 10.6.
Why not blame yourselves for not doing the homework? Honestly, everyone who upgraded blindly are morons. I bet most of you didn;t even bother to verify your volumes and permissions before installing 10.6.
I got a 2008 Mac Pro. Am running CS1 and CS2, ilife 09 and Office 08 and everything works fine. Even my istat pro works fine. To be honest, aside from expose, plus little changes here and there...am not seeing a huge difference.
@alberto

haha isn't that the same argument for upgrading to anything early when you receive any errors whatsoever. Shouldn't Apple be able to release some that just works seeing as that they dig at Vista sooooo much.
@Ethos
Noted. But I upgraded to Snow Leopard without an error during or after installation. All my programs work and all my external drives and printers work fine as well. I guess am the few that had no problems with the upgrade. As for compatibility issues, Apple, Adobe and many other manufacturers and developers had posted on their sites what will and will not work in 10.6 weeks before the release. All anybody had to do is have the common sense to look for it.
You're not one of the few that didn't have problems. Probably 90% of the people who upgraded (if not higher) have had no problems whatsoever. I personally can say that it was the smoothest upgrade I've ever had. All my programs work flawlessly, many of them noticeably better. And don't even try to compare this to Vista. Ya, there's a couple tiny problems here and there, but it's a new OS... that ALWAYS happens. Apple doesn't jab at Vista due to a few minor problems. It's been years since Vista came out and they have yet to address many of the HUGE problems that were present. One of my good friends, who's a big windows junky, had to erase Vista off his computer when it first came out (even though it came on the computer) and downgrade to XP, because vista would only recognize his internal hard drives about 50% of the time. It was months before the drivers for his printer came out. Even longer for the drivers for his video card. Vista is almost passable now, but it was nowhere near being ready when they released it. Yes, there's been some small compatibility issues with Snow Leopard, but there's been a compatibility list for a while now. All things considered, Apple did an excellent release here. Definitely worth $30 for sure.
Wow that's longer than the list of programs that were incompatible with Vista when it first came out.
@insky - it's not a list of incompatible programs, it's a list of all programs then a status of working, sort of working, or not working
No Program incompatibilities main problem is trash is a pain in the ass not emptying properly
Srsly?? I'll think of you everytime some iWad says "Dude, Macs just work!"
is that wallpaper really what comes packaged after you install snow leopard?!
No.
It comes "packaged", but is not default.
The default one is a slightly modified version of the leopard "aurora" wallpaper.
i think it would be funny if this got highest ranked. but it won't or will it not it won't but i hope it does but i don't think it can, but maybe it has a chance but probally not, oh well
+1
How about a you guys give away an Actual Snow Leopard, not the software as a Recession Antidote?
Because no one likes furries.
@KGB: Can't you ask Putin to hunt one for Engadget first?
@KGB: Pic: http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/22/sluggish-iphone-sales-could-lead-to-stiff-fines-for-russian-oper/
menumeters isn't working, as most people already know. hp driver (.kext) is having problems. Tinyos works except toscomm-jni
There's SL-compatible beta already. Check the website.
Were you able to compile nesc? I can't and hence can't use tinyos :(
No, I don't remember XP crashing. Stop flame baiting.
Why am I being downranked? :-(
I'm seeing a pattern emerging here.
For fun, and for trying to stop the pre-God complex rants. Dont worry im a Windows guy.
Install a vanilla version of XP and then talk, XP was buggy as HELL when it first came out!
Not until SP1 did the majority of the issues disappear.
As for Snow Leopard, seems to be working just fine on my end!
Personally, I'm downranking you because I remember XP. If you never had any problems then be thankful but those who did (myself included) are allowed to vent their spleen on occasion. Frankly, XP is why I use a Mac today despite having been a Microsoft "fanboy" up until then.
logitec MX revolution some functionality not compatible.
overall system running much slower!
Congratulations on your upgrade!
My Performance MX mouse lost the ability to control Exposé and Spaces. It worked great for the one day before I upgraded. Your mouse is a couple of years old. MIne was just released this week. Logitech might have had it ready for 10.6 since they launched the SAME WEEK. I spent $100 on the thing! Got through to Logitech very easily by phone...but they didn't know crap about an update over the weekend.
Same here - the LCC won't recognize my Logitech MX Revolution mouse. Works with the apple driver, but with limitations.
Interestingly, the driver for my Alesis Firewire audio interface works in 32 and in 64 bit mode - very nice.
System is snappy - but I wouldn't say it if I didn't expect it :)
The problem there is not the mouse itself, but the Logitech Control Center software. I also have found that I can no longer control Spaces or Exposé with the mouse buttons that I had programmed to do so. This is likely due to the fact that Exposé at the very least was changed with 10.6. Odd that Logitech hasn't bothered to release a version of the LCC software that actually works properly with Snow Leopard. The latest version on the Logitech website won't even install on Snow Leopard!
My MX Revolution works just fine. I don't use the Logitech software, but set up all the mouse buttons to control Expose and Spaces through the preference pane (the drop down menus next to the keyboard shortucts let you use the mouse buttons).
Move copies of Expose and Spaces one folder up (Applications). Expose will then work. This is a fix until Logitech fixes it themselves.
You guys with the Expose/Spaces issues is because Apple moved the apps to the Utilities folder and that is why it's not working, COPY them not move them (expose.app and spaces.app) to the Applications folder and it should work again.
Seems quicker than Tiger on my Mac Pro. If I had wasted the money to upgrade to Leopard, I'm sure it would seem even quicker, since Leopard was a dog.
My wireless keeps doing funky stuff when I put my macbook pro into sleep. When i wake it, it wont connect - only way to fix is to remove automatic location and add a new one with same settings. Only happened a few times but very annoying.
Yes, I've seen that but I've not tried your solution yet. Rather, I have been manually connecting to my network again, which has so far worked but is certainly irritating.
2 upgrades went perfectly for me, nice shiny new OS, very fast. Friend had some glitches but he's installed every know software known to man on that thing.
Only thing I find annoying is having System Preferences restart for 32-bit plug-ins such as GeekTool and Flip4Mac...
If that really bothers you, just do a get info on your System Preferences.app and tick the "Open in 32bit mode" box. Problem solved ;)
Fernando: Couldn't you just symlink them?
Yeah, that's lame I noticed a few apps in my system preferences do that. So I'm uninstalling them, until they fix it. I think I only lost Growl functionality that was important to me.
Reminds me of "starting in OS 9" in the old days when MacosX was brandnew :)
I can't install yet -- the drive door pops open during the mandatory reboot and the process starts back at zero. My only guess is that it has to do with my third party firewire 400 card. I'll try installing with that removed tonight.
So, wait, MacOS has problems too? Amazing!
I don't think you've been paying attention. The "problems" you're referring to are being caused by third party software that hasn't been upgraded to 64-bit. You do understand that Snow Leopard is pretty much all new under the hood, right?
"I don't think you've been paying attention. The "problems" you're referring to are being caused by third party software that hasn't been upgraded to 64-bit"
And many of Vista's issues were caused by 3rd party companies not writing proper drivers. Didnt stop the Appleverse from saying it sucked.
So lets not double you standards, M'kay?
Zak, now I believe you're the one who's not paying attention. Not all people are having simple, 3rd party app compatibility issues.
mmm, I'm using and loving Windows 7, but I still down rank you.
Read what you wrote again then punch a table with your head.
Snow Leopard wouldn't install on my unibody MacBook, complained about can't load support files. Will have to try on a blank drive. Heck, I might even get an SSD while I'm at it.
My understanding is that Snow Leopard requires Leopard (though some say Tiger will work) to be installed first. You can't just load Snow Leopard on a blank drive.
EricW - Hear Leo Lapaorte say this weekend that he was able to install on a blank drive with the $29 disc. Shhhhh!
Just format your drive using the SL DVD, when you put the DVD in click on the 'utilities' button in the installer, and it'll ask to restart your mac. Once it does that and boots into the installer, just format your disk like you would do in 10.5.
@EricW
No. I finally got around to buying a new hard drive for my MBP this weekend and I tried installing the OS directly from the Snow Leopard DVD. Everything worked as normal - you do not need to install Leopard first and there is no check performed for the Leopard installation DVD.
Sorry, just to clarify - my installation was done using the EUR 29 upgrade version.
Kelmon: Correct. Even Apple says you can start from scratch if you have Tiger only.
Aperture v1.5.6 does not work.
I don't think that's suppose to work on 10.6
If it's universal binary - then it should. Write to Apple support and ask about it.
That's a bug for sure.
Well... My early 2008 (not Unibody) macbook pro is hotter than before, the GPU is being killed. GP5 doesn't work, aperture wont work my wireless is still flaky from 10.5.8 and my battery life has been reduce about an hour. Yes I've calibrated my battery and ensured that its not my network.
Not to mention the fact that it does not load the 64bit kernel and its extensions by default on anything but an x-serve...
That's sounds kind of bad. Probably I should wait before buying an upgrade for my MBP.
"Not to mention the fact that it does not load the 64bit kernel and its extensions by default on anything but an x-serve..."
It was commented many times that generally you do not need 64 bit kernel.
Linux has 64 bit kernel - and whole OS is 64 bit - and even after many years you get a glitch or two with proprietary 32 bit programs.
I'd say Apple did everybody a great service not forcing to immediately upgrade every piece of software to 64 bits.
There's probably no advantage to use the 64bit kernel, but here:
Edit your com.apple.Boot.plist file (it's XML) and force it to always use the 64bit kernel by adding"arch=x86_64" to the kernel node.
or
Hold down the 6 and 4 number keys during boot to temporarily use it.
or
Install the pcefiv10.1 bootloader from the Hackintosh community.
I think this only works if you have a 64bit EFI Mac or a SSE3 capable chip (Core2 or better), and there's a few reported problems with it like longer boot times, iPhones don't always tether, etc. Also, even more software and drivers are likely to fail, which is probably why they don't use it on the consumer products.
Xmarks isn't working correctly for Safari.
But– it absolutely SCREAMS on my iMac. Photoshop CS3 opens in like 7 seconds.
@ John
wow, 7 seconds sounds like a lot less. Just out of curiosity I tested opening PS CS3 Extended (stand alone) and it took exactly 5 seconds. My Laptop is about 3 years old...
1) Windows XP SP3 on Toshiba M 70-122 Laptop having 533 Mhz FSB
2) Intel Pentium M 740 @ 1.73 GHz L1 = 32KB, L2 = 2MB
3) RAM upgraded to 2GB DDR2 @ 4/4/4/12
4) HDD upgraded to 320 GB SATA
Are you using very old iMac or having less RAM / slow processor?
I am not using any extra plugins for PS, perhaps you might have a plugin / font list that is taking up the time.
For my old 17 inch Power Book G4 1.0 GHz, I have upgraded from 10.2 till 10.5x each version spending about $129. I wanted to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 to see if there is a real speed boost, but Apple has shut the doors a loyal customer (me) :( it takes 22 seconds by the way for PS CS3 on the old PB .. didn't upgrade PB, all stock h/w components. Upgrading h/w is a whole new ball game when it comes to PowerBooks. I didn't venture in to that. If I have to use 10.6, means I have to upgrade old PB to New MBP, if I am not willing to compromise, I will have to shell out at least $2499 + $50 (matte screen) for the same 17-inch equivalent Apple PB.
For $2550, I will get a lot more processing power, RAM and hdd space. But in these tough economic times, I guess I will have to wait until don't know when. Till then, I will keep using the Win Laptop as it's fast enough for me.
Before any one down ranks me, just wish to clarify
-- I follow a 3 year laptop refresh cycle and was about due this year end.
-- I got my old 17 Inch PB in 2003, it has 60 GB HDD, 512 MB DDR(1) RAM and 1X DVDRW (in 2003, all this was like a dream to have)
-- I started as a Mac User, but switched to Windows in 2006, the low cost alternative.
-- I was thinking to go back to Mac this year, but cant afford. Mac's come in new flavors every year, so is the OSX, I cant cant justify that kind of spending to myself. And it does not make sense to me to upgrade every year.
Viren - Your Powerbook G4 was released in January of 2003, making it very close to being 7 years old. Please stop crying about the whole "loyal customer" BS, how long do you expect Apple to support that hardware? 10 years? 20? The fact is that you can still run Leopard on it, and it opens PS CS3 in 22 seconds which quite frankly is really good given the fact that it's almost 7 years old.
Are you talking cold start? That is pretty damn fast. I am on Vista and it (CS4 Extended) takes like 15 or more. It is much faster on 7 but I'm not sure if it's that fast.
Zak, I always meant to ask: What is your position in Apple's PR department? Aside from on your knees I mean?
My iMac's specs are as follows–
24"
2.8GHz
4GB RAM
NVIDIA 8800 GS w/ 512VRAM
500GB HDD
I really need to upgrade to one of the Toshiba laptops from 3 years ago and get in on some XP action if it's that good! Who would have thought that XP is the future of computing? Dang.
Mark - I know you think you're being funny, but if I worked for Apple PR, I damn sure wouldn't be posting here. Having said that, I know a hell of a lot more about Macs than you do, so you go ahead and get back to me as soon as you think you have a valid argument against anything I say here. Kay?
Or, you know, simply STFU. Either one works for me.
@Zak, I accept that my choice of word "loyal" might have been wrong. perhaps "Old Customer" could have been better. I do own other apple products though.
@John, that's almost the latest in the Apple line. I didn't mean that a old machine or a 10 year old XP is latest and greatest. I was simply stating that XP on a old machine with good enough RAM and HDD are faster than a Vista/Win7/OSX10.6 for old h/w. I also checked with one of my friends latest MBP (customized to base configuration + 8G DDR3, matte screen), it PS3 loads in like 3 to 4 seconds with OSX 10.5, he's yet to receive 10.6 (we live in third/fourth world), perhaps 10.6 on his MBP it could be even faster.
I considered moving to MBP this year as I could utilize best of both worlds (Windows7 and OSX 10.6) with excellent h/w from Apple.
@cmsb55, I m not sure what is meant by cold start. But yes, the machine was just booted, it was cold outside. Photoshop was opened for the first time after the boot.
@ Mark Andersson
- the missionary position, duh.
@Zak
Wow! That's the furthest I've seen toys thrown out of a pram for a while.
Thing is, you could be the most knowledgeable person about Macs in the world - which you aren't - and it wouldn't matter because everyone thinks you're a prick and won't listen to you.
I had issues with NeoOffice - Turns out i just needed to download a new patch.
I have my desktop background set to rotate every 5 minutes. That was disabled by default - I had to fix it.
Other than that, it's been REALLY smooth sailing. My computer gets WAY less hot now too. CPU utilization is way down, I have more free disk space than I did before, etc. All in all, I'm extremely happy.
tsmuxer is down, but hopefully an update will be pushed out soon...
I'm just speaking the truth.
Windows 7 Rules!!!
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but I've been running into issues with Quicktime X and playing WMV files. I previously had Flip4Mac working perfectly fine with Quicktime 7, but since it's updated to QX, I receive an error stating that "Quicktime player must be installed to play this video" or something of that nature. Not sure if it's because Flip4Mac doesn't have a current plug-in for QX or what...Any thoughts or similar issues?
Sadly there are no codec plug-ins supported by QuickTime X because Apple hasn't provided an API to write 64-bit codecs yet. So you'll need to use the old QuickTime Player 7 to use Flip4Mac, which is what the warning is about.
You could install QuickTime 7 when you installed the OS, but I don't know if that would help.
Here's the fix:
Right-click on a .wmv file. Choose "Get Info". Down in the pane, you'll see something that says "Open With". Cick browse and choose the new Quicktime. Then, click apply to all same files.
My terms may be a bit off. I'm on a Win machine right now at work, but you'll be able to figure it out.
