Remember that time you installed Windows XP before it even hit the market? Remember how your AGP video card would only display a maximum resolution of 800 x 600 and your audio card would only emit bleeps and bloops? Ah, those were the days. Quite a bit has happened since XP landed to wash away the awful stain that was Windows ME, though it's still no shock to hear that new operating systems leave more than a few applications broken. Over the past few days, we've
seen oodles of gripes from across the web from loyal Mac users who just can't believe
Snow Leopard has borked their favorite software, but we're wondering how things have been on your machine. Have you realized that your
Optimus Maximus no longer boogies with OS X 10.6? Are you bummed that iStat pro isn't giving you the details it used to? What kind of hell has broken loose since you threw caution in the garbage and updated your machine?

Quicktime X is horrible. It disables all files it thinks it can't play. I was able to get .mkvs to work again with a patch from Perian but it refuses to let me play .m3u playlist files. I reinstalled Quicktime 7 so I could listen to playlist files again and Apple, in their infinite wisdom, CHANGED Quicktime 7 so that it bunches the playlist into one large track instead of separate tracks. Why the hell would they change Quicktime 7? I listen to a recording of a radio show every day via .m3u streaming files and it's pretty much impossible to skip past segments I don't want to hear now. I'm really pissed.
I found a huge problem with snow leopard, I can no longer use "search in google" feature in applications like Mail, Address Book and iCal. When I choose some words, hit the right mouse button and click "search in google" nothing will happen!!!
umm. "search for Google feature". Are you talking about the search field on the top right hand side of the window. That's not Google...you use that to search within the application.
Safari and Firefox are the only programs that has a Google search field on the right hand side.
Here is a perfect example of someone that has no idea what they are talking about.
Arite so wuts up engadget? Y r u talkin bout xp when dis is an macOS article? Take note plz only discuss apple issues in macOS articles thanx.
Seems like every time theres a problem with computer OS, y not compare it wit windows, its gettin annoying yo. Let the problems of each OS stand solely on users who didnt pay attention before upgrading or how bout blaming it on the developer?!!!
Hope it gets through to u, peace.
It's the way of the world, my man. These are all completing products, and comparison and evaluation in relation to the competition is inevitable, even in jest.
What? Anyone know which language this is? I've ruled out English, Dutch and German so far.
Every single app is working for me except for Little Snitch which the dev already updated. This update has been like the rest, perfect.
3/4 installs I've done so far have been 100% smooth. The other one, not sure what the problem is but it ejects the disc during the install, haven't really looked into it (the person was pretty ambivalent about upgrading anyway). My friend did 4 or 5 installs which were all 100% smooth. I'd always had a rule of waiting about 6 months before getting any windows upgrades, but I grabbed snow leopard as soon as it hit the shelf. Quickest and easiest upgrade I've ever done, so nice to have something 'just work'.
All fine here. Got back 13Gigs. For some weird reason the hdd that showed 74Gb (rated 80GB) not shows 79GB ...
OK, so I'm not going mad then. I noticed exactly the same thing when I installed a new 320GB drive into my MBP and was surprised to see Disk Utility reporting that it was actually 320GB in size rather than the 300GB that I was expecting. I'm quite sure that this change has not made any difference to the capacity of the drive so I'm wondering why the change was made.
I'ved had a little trouble logging on to the campus wifi, but other than that, I havent seen any problems. Snow leopard gave me 34 gigs of space back on my MacBook Pro! The speed boost was very impressive. Amidst the few hiccups, its a great update to my Mac!
manycam for mac doesnt work well. it made me realize i don't need it.
The multitouch trackpad seems less responsive. Maybe it's just me being paranoid though.
sadly, the issues I'm having are all iLife related. iPhoto uploaders for Facebook and Flickr (the built-in ones, not add-ons) are not working. A WideMail plugin for Mail.App is busted, and I had to edit a plist to get my subjects back in the email list view. Other than that, all is good.
I use a 2007 MBP, use native software and use VMWare Fusion a lot.
Upgrade to SL was fast, without incident, and VMWare continues to work
without any problem at all. For me, this was a success.
Can't say I have noticed any real change.
Was it worth the Euro 29.99 price? Can't say for sure yet.
a bit of weird stuff with my keychain, but a restart fixed it!
So far I can't say that I've been hugely impressed. There have been some nice tweaks that are welcome but I'm not really noticing any performance improvements on my MBP with a clean install and its the things that aren't working that jump out at me. Stability doesn't seem to have been delivered at the application level with both Mail and Word crashing, Mail refused to send email until the SMTP server details were changed (details that have been fine for the past 5-years), and one Cocoa/Java application that looks like it will never be Snow Leopard compatible due to changes to the Cocoa/Java bridge.
Right now Parallels Desktop looks like it will need to be shutdown and my system restarted after the application has gone nuts and consumed all my processor time and is doing nothing.
I realise that the accepted wisdom is never to install on Day 1 but with Snow Leopard's promises I really was hoping for better.
To any early adopter with problems,
Thank for you struggle so i can buy a /hopefully/ better product this december.
Early adoption may not be the smartest thing but remember that if no-one did early adoption, lots of problems wouldn't be revealed.
We should thank you for complaining and pointing things out.
Installed on Macbook Pro late 2008:
Fans have gone mad (shooting up to 6200 rpm for no apparent reason - lots of people are apparently having this issue across the laptop and mac mini range),
vmware causes kernel to boot in 32 bit,
iPhone video imported to iphoto no longer play with quicktime when double clicked (apparently a QT10/64 bit issue),
Cyber duck broken,
Glims broken,
System seems to be running slower.
... and that's on the first day!
Overall, I think this is the problem with the Apple brand. I expect better, and therefore am usually disappointed.
Respect to the windows guys who have to deal with billions of possible hardware / software configurations. I'm amazed windows (whatever version) actually runs at all... considering the problems that Apple have with their own software on their own hardware!
Please remind me never to early adopt again!
... oh yeah, and why can you not "force quit" by right clicking on the applications bar now?!! What used to be two clicks is now 4? is it because Mac apps don't "hang" - so why have this feature so accessible?
Not in my experience!
Still haven't gotten Mail to work with Small Business Server 2003, despite the vague promises in the advertisements. Of course, the iPhone gets that email flawlessly using activesynce or whatever. I don't understand why they can't use that simple technology on computer when they can on a mobile device.
My audio-out isnt working anymore on my 13" mbp (Just bought it a month ago). apple care told me to bring it into an apple store but im at university now. dont have a car and the nearest store is 40 miles away. :/
Eh, I'm just gonna skip it for now. I just got a MacBook like two months ago. There's no real point in my upgrading it at this very moment.
Only thing working 2x faster is the beach ball.

Logitech MX Revolution and half my apps have missing functionality.
Snow Leopard installed very easily on my 13 inch MacBook. So easily in fact, that when it was finished I wasn't actually sure what the point of spending $30 on it was. It is very difficult to tell anything is changed. By extension, it's very difficult to tell what benefit I am getting.
But I didn't have any incompatibilities at least.
My HP Deskjet F4180 printer no longer works. There is no printer driver for it despite the fact that HP's website says it is SL compatible. I contacted HP Mac Support and they said it could take up to 2 MONTHS to create a driver. I contacted Apple Care and they were even less help saying that I'd have to wait for HP! HP Support also said that they have 24+ models with driver issues. Can't imagine how many printers that have been rendered useless across all the different brands. Maybe if they would have waited until the announced release and hadn't pushed it up by a whole month, many of these useless issues would have been avoided! I expect MUCH more from Apple. I have NEVER seen them be so unprepared in my 15 years as a Mac user!!!
no info and usb is not working here on my macbook so downgrading for now
Install went smooth on my 15" MBP (purchased earlier this year). Only issue was my Cisco VPN Client. It couldn't find any open network connections, even though there was one. Just had to reinstall it. Now everything is working. Even Parallels Desktop 4 (latest build, running Vista SP2) is working great. Whew!
Regained about 11GB of space. And now I actually like Stacks.
As of this moment everything is working.
iStat menus 1.3 isn't working, but 2.0 is planned soon, I have heard. Kind of a bummer though... gotta have my menus!
I have some problems with Spotlight not giving me the correct results unless I copy my query, delete it and paste it back when I have directories with almost similar names.. I haven't tried re-indexing but it is kinda annoying at times...
What annoys me about Snow Leopard is how poorly documented it currently is. I maintain a page about its font management at http://www.prepressure.com/fonts/basics/snow-leopard-fonts - but cannot find any entry in Apple's support documents about the list of included fonts or which fonts should never get deleted by users. Why do I have to find out at Ars Technica that Apple decided to drop the dfont file format? For an OS that is essentially an optimised version of the previous release, you'd expect Apple to also have the usual technotes available right from the start.
Yesterday Flash CS4 started freezing up. Today the Finder started to crash every time I opened a new window. None of this used to happen before I upgraded. Am downgrading back to Leopard.
I had to re-install my printer. HP Photosmart C4700 series
What's broken for me so far:
- X11 forwarding over ssh doesn't work, which means I can't host remote X11 apps anymore. I'd be rolling back to 10.5 over this along if I didn't still have a G5 tower that's obviously never going to take the upgrade.
- Vine Server is "wonky" when controlling the Mac from a remote VNC session. Most notably, keyboard input stops working when I use Spaces to switch desktops, until I hit a ket on the Mac, then it comes back. Also, when I do the Ctrl-arrow key sequence to switch Spaces, the visual overlay doesn't go away until I click on a window's titlebar (and then, as said before, key input doesn't work until I hit a local key).
Umm, Safari crashes each time I try to download using "Download linked file as..." Does anyone else have this issue? Shouldn't Safari work like a charm with Snow Leopard, or is this just me thinking this way?
only problem i'm having is some minor issue with iChat. My connection is very sporadic, often disconnecting me while mid-chat with someone. I also can't video chat with my girlfriend that's using Tiger on a 15inch macbook pro =\
just found that iPhone tethering not work after upgrade to snow leopard.
when I use software which follow system network setting, all of them won't work,
but when I use vnc, firefox or adium, they're still able to online...
seem S L force me to use LAN / Airport only....
Broken or breaking:
flash cs4
fireworks cs4
xtorrent
bits on wheels
download stacks preview icons
mail
firefox
list is pretty much endless.
I have a KM 3035 also. There is no way to get this thing to print. I keep getting an improper installation error in the print queue.
Any Ideas? Any generic protocol I can use for pdfs, docs?
- Multi-image in preview not working
- Waiting for ONYX (still!)
- Xmarks dead for Safari
- Flash crashes from time to time
- iTunes opens involuntarily when using Frontrow remote
One problem, that is due to digidesign not bothering to write a 64 bit driver. Old VLC (1.0.1) can still access my external sound card, as well as my professional audio apps, so it's not a biggie.
I've been a loyal Mac user a few years now (cut my teeth coding C/C++ on PC's thought). Now here is the thing, Win7 is a pretty good OSX rip off yes, but it is stable and had new features I liked. It even found everyone of my drivers and was painless install. After two weeks with snow leopard and win7 I only had few complaints. I write about them here:
http://wordpress.verticalchallenge.org/2009/10/windows-7-gets-it-right-for-disabled-users/
But one thing I want to know is about speed. Win7 running 32 bit code on 64 bit machine mus6t be slower than OSX and it's new thread dispatching. I don't have similar hardware to test on, but might try to dual boot my iMac with win7 and run few3 benchmarks.
Kicker is that if MS got win7 right and it feels like OSX but on better/cheaper hardware... them Apple needs to keep ahead with features. I'm not knocking snow leopard, I installed it and didn't expect cool new things.. I just wanted better, cleaner system. It would serve MS well to improve and consolidate the core functionality once and awhile.. maybe they have that with win7?
Brad
I have a 4,1 Macbook Pro - and I have half working Multitouch... Up and Down 2 finger scroll gesture works, but pinching, back and forward two finger swipe and 3 & 4 finger gestures dont work either.
Anyone else got the same issue?
