Sony to debut 3D BRAVIA TVs by end of 2010, also eyeing 3D VAIOs, Blu-ray films, and PS3 games?
The Financial Times has it on good word what the major unveil in Sony chief Sir Howard Stringer's keynote tomorrow at IFA 2009 will, so much so that it's quoting him with phrases he hasn't even said yet. According to the report, the company is making a huge push into the third dimension, with 3D BRAVIA HDTVs hitting the retail channels by the end of 2010. Also on the menu is 3D-compatible PlayStation 3 titles (which we've kind of heard before), VAIO laptops, and Blu-ray movies, but it's unclear from the article if they shares the same 2010 timeline. Polarized glasses will be required for use, but hey, just consider it a fashion statement. We're now very anxious to see how close Sir Stringer sticks to this purported script for tomorrow's big event.

Why the random apple coming from the TV on fire? :S
That would be a carrot, actually.
When I say apple you picture that? Woo someone messed you up.
The flaming 3D is an obvious attack on the homosexual community. I anticipate a class action lawsuit tomorrow.
Why does everyone have to bring apples into a discussion about carrots?
Actually, they're all members of the NSSGW (National Society of Sunglasses Wearers) and they've convened to watch 2 girls, one cup...
Really no comments on this
I bet if it were a Apple related article this would have some buzz
anyhow glad to see Sony doing something
A flaming carrot......I can't honesty describe the rest of it, for fear my mind may explode
Extreme Carrot is Extreme.
So....everyone is freaking out over a 3-D Flaming Carrot?
Why is everyone freaking out about a pair of glasses?
So I guess everybody's OK with 1080i/p resolution....I would have been much more pleased to see support for higher resolutions.
I can't wait for 3D pr0n!!!
Already here, practiced by your girl and me.
Just practice though, right? Like you don't go in. Plus, dry humping is proven to be safer. Keep practicing with yourself too. Maybe next year you'll be good enough for varsity.
If you have to wear glasses (and I assume you do), I'm out. I'm even avoiding the 3D movies that are out there, the ROI just isn't there.
I dunno, "Up" in 'Real-D' was pretty awesome.
why cant i just have a 120hz+ tv with no 3d bs?
Even with the 3d tvs you can turn the function off.
3D glasses? I'll wait.
For video games I don't know I would mind the glasses.
The nvidia glasses are actually really nice. If you know someone with them try them out they are great for a few of the games out there. Really adds some realism. Plus the tech is pretty passive.
It looks like a 3D video of people watching some rad carrot 3D projection.
...and I hope they add 3D to their projectors.
I think you can do this with two 720p projectors but I have NO IDEA how...anyone got some good links/advice to help a brutha out??
I really want 3D-everything to go away. Not interested.
I didn't know they were forcing you to buy it.
I hope Prada, Gucci, and LV are lining up production of their 3D polarized lineup to coincide with these Sony HDTV releases... I gotta maintain my fashion flare.
I don't think the glasses are polarized - different 3D tech. Sony requires the use of shuttered glasses - so the glasses turn off one eye every other frame and each eye gets a slightly different image. The shuttered glasses are more expensive and have to be in sync with the TV frames.
Polarized glasses are cheaper because they do not require any coordination with the TV frames. The TV would also have to emit polarized light that is different for each eye and the lens of the glasses would filter out the different polarizations - a different one for each eye.
any extra benefit for the shuttered glasses?
The Sony system uses polarized glasses, much like all those 3D movies in theaters. They do NOT use 3D stereoscopic shutter glasses like the Nvidia system. Recently, LCD manufacturers have figured out a method in displaying to spectrum of polarized light via their screens (an amazing feat since LCD uses polarized light as a fundamental method to display images).
Arstechnica had a demo of it:
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/01/ces-2009-sony-teases-with-high-quality-ps3-3d.ars
That's actually incorrect. Sony's (now announced) system uses "frame sequential display and active-shutter glass systems", i.e. 120Hz displays and LCD-shutter glasses like nVidia's 3D Vision, not polarised glasses.
Polarised glasses are cheaper, but can only be used with specially-polarised displays at half the resolution, or with dual-display systems. This is a better system for cinemas, but LCD shutter is probably a better system for the home.
Yes, they use active shutter glasses. I don't see where the confusion is coming from. The source article was pretty clear.
Glasses huh? Are the images still transparent? 3D has always been pretty half-assed that way. Without solid opaque images the 3D aspect is minimal to me.
i would love to get a 3-d tv but expense will be out of this world.
the only people who wear tinted glasses indoors are blind people and assholes
The Flaming Carrot! That is the greatest Superhero of the MYSTERY MEN universe. He was supposed to be the BIG time superhero during the mystery men movie but the movie makers decided he would outshine the main cast members. Bunch of BS i say!
I could care less about 3D - better PQ - larger screens - that is important to me. I'm not saying they shouldn't worry about 3D but until you get a TV even close to a Kuro - you really don't have much to interest me. I saw their latest models at CES this year - not very impressive for PQ.
Ut! Huzzah!
I saw this a few months ago at a trade show.
I'm not sure if it was a Bravia or some sort of new Sony professional LCD monitor.
I wasn't interested enough to ask. Although I did watch the demo reel, which was a short film that Sony had shot in Japan.
The source material was playing from a HDCAM-SR deck.
The glasses were not shuttered. I assume they were polarised.
It looked good, but not really mind-blowingly good.
It's incredibly difficult to shoot 3-D without it either looking very cheezy or giving the viewer a headache.
the world is in 3D. So is my pc games and home videos.
And the tech keeps getting bettar. Looking forward to watching some good 3D movies on some 3D HD TV if only they start selling them HERE IN EUROPE FFS!
I don't really get it, though I haven't really looked into it. Does the source material have to be shot in 3D that this is going to be able to display in some novel way? Or does it have some sort of function that will make any given source 3D?
3D always made me a little sick in the theaters... but the new 120hz stuff doesn't have the same dreadful side effects!
I loved it so much, I bought the Geforce 3D Vision setup with the Samsung 2233rz. It makes the games so much more beautiful. It's not some shitty special effect, it's like going from 0xAA to 16xQAA!
I'm a xbox 360 fan, but if Sony makes the first 3D console (or releases 3D games for the PS3 in large numbers), I'm buying a fraking PlayStation and 3D Bravia.
Whoa! I could care less about Sony and 3d anything. What I want to know is who is the Flaming Carrot fan, and where did you get this sweet graphic? :-)
What about the 3D TVs that don't require glasses? I thought they were getting close to manufacturing some of those...
New 3D tech seems to work pretty good but it still gives me a headache after awhile. Nonetheless, 3D PS3 games would be pretty sweet.
I don't want no 3D bullshit...I'm old and I'm scared of the future
Don't care about the TV, but MAJOR kudos for the use of Flaming Carrot! Great stuff!
OLED is interesting. 3D TV? Yawwwnn..
needing special glasses just to watch the tv? no thanks.
my eyes dont agree with 3D stuff anyway it just gives me a headache
and my brother is blind in one eye so he can't use it either
3D = YES!
GLASSES = NO!
Can u imagine having your mates over to watch the game, and everyone
has to don the super geeky 3D specs!
I appreciate that the 3d glasses free technology is more expensive
but surly better to bring it to market now so in 5 years we can all
afford it! The way I see it is the 3d + glasses technology is going
to damage the reputation of 3d and put people off. Therefore the
glasses free technology may never come to market! Rant over
