Video: Nokia N900 put through its paces... in Italian
We're sure to see a whole lot more of the Nokia N900 as Nokia World gets underway this week, but in the meantime we're super into this video walkthrough posted up by Kiamanokia.it -- and not just because the Italian narration makes using the N900 seem absolutely delightful. Nope, we're much more into the extremely-responsive interface, the rotary-zoom gesture in the browser, and the overall slickness of Maemo 5. We'll withhold judgment until we spend some time with an actual production N900, but things are looking promising -- head after the break to check the video for yourselves.

And Still greatly outdated... yay
Yes you seem to be.
LOL Truth hurts :)
Haha !!
This shit makes the iPhone OS looks what it is, sooo 2007 :-P
Nokia strikes back, and it hurts ! The N900 will be mine.
I actually think that looks pretty solid, but as Engadget said, it's hard to pass judgment before actually using the device.
It has a very wide screen that's for sure. But that keyboard. I'm not like the spoiled geeks here and other tech blogs who thinks a QWERTY with less than 5 rows is "OMG FAIL!!". But three is pretty bad. I could live with three, had they not put the space bar all the way on the right. I mean, what the hell were they thinking?! But whatever. Though I can't stand people who constantly blow phones over just because they don't have 5. 4 is good enough. Next year, you guys will most likely be like "OMG IT HAZ NO FUNCTION KEYS, FAIL!!!"
Anyone know if this will have USB host like the N810? If so, it's my next phone.
Not too many phones that allow a USB keyboard to be connected. (I have my reasons for USB over Bluetooth... special needs keyboard.)
oh yes my friend this does indeed have usb host support. to confirm just wait till a proper review comes along, alternatively try checking the repository for the relevant packages as this has started to be updated and will be populated shortly.

Hmm, looks like it's only got a Micro USB type B socket, so probably not. It would need a type AB to support host mode.
i am soo selling my E71 for this.
i wonder if other linux softwares that work on ubuntu and fedora work, since they are also debian?
yup, see in this link, a desktop OCR app running in maemo with minimum effort: http://www.joaquimrocha.com/2009/08/21/ocrfeeder-running-in-fremantle/
(of course it's a little work if you want to make the interface appropriate for finger use, though)
...and switching to T-Mobile as well?
Are you ready for Nokia World?
What a great OS and smooth interface! Looking forward to seeing the real device.
Me too. Any estimates on the cost of this device? Also, is the sound quality via 3.5mm headphone jack typically good on the nokia tablets? If it turns out to be as good as it looks in this video I might consider this over the ZuneHD and enjoy the upgrade to a multitasking beast that this. :D
Here in Finland it costs 599€ directly from Nokia (price includes 22% tax so it's actually even cheaper than what Nokia said) and it's a common knowledge that it's usually at least 50€ cheaper when you buy it from other shops.
does it really matter? Its cheaper and a lot easier to send media my email than mms! specially seeing as most phones settings for MMS are so confusing for the majority of joe public out there.
It's a shame this won't have MMS.
Probably the biggest reason I won't be getting one of these.
Hmm...first I've heard of Nokia not having MMS. Considering the n97 has MMS and 5mpx camera, and this also has a 5mpx camera...it makes no sense to not have MMS. Can anyone confirm this?
How do you know this won't support MMS?
One of the Maemo Reps at InternetTabletTalk forums said so. But he also said that it's hot in development and the only reason it was left out was because it was not done. Remember, the phone stack for Maemo is completely new. Flash 10 is also not available right now, but Flash 9 is. Flash 10 is also in development for Maemo.
No MMS
http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/specifications/
ummmm, where is the link specifically saying that it has no mms. The one you showed about the specifications does not say mms no included. If you know Symbian you would know that the conversation app guesses (in a sense) what's mms or sms so no need to specifically say that mms is supported.
i would think it has mms, nokias tend to change the message type automatically ie. write an sms and attach a pic and it'll send as mms
well in 'Email & Messaging' section it mentions SMS but not MMS.
please, can anyone confirm?
It will be added for sure. It actually doesn't have video calling yet available either because it's not ready. So no need to panic.
Yet Josh will never accept it.
I guess that he can't stand people with fingernails.
I think they should modify the rotary zoom so that you draw just 1 (or 2) circle around whatever you want to zoom in on.
you mean like on an HTC device, maybe they have a patent?
Agreed. Seems like a lot of work to zoom in & out in it's current state.
Will there ever be a app store with thousands of apps for Maemo?
Yes, it's called Ubuntu deb repository. Oh you mean paid apps? Well, us Linux geeks just give away our programs for free. So that app store you have, is free for us.
They have a fair amount of apps already. Although if they can't manage to organize and present them in a simple way for joe wine box to find and know what he's getting does, this probably won't make it far no matter how stellar a device and OS they make.
That's what ovi is for and with the Qt development kit apps between symbian, maemo, windows, several linux distros and even OSx should be able to be transfered cross platform with little to no modifications of the source code. UI and such enhancements and other things will need to be worked on but it should be very easy relatively to transfer applications.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO Nilay is turning away from the Dark Side! You're supposed to be an Apple Fanboy and bash Chris for even thinking about getting the N900.
Ok, my existential crisis is over. So Nilay, what kinds of apps do Lawyers need? I'm guessing google for Library of Congress is enough? Know if there is a linux Library of Congress in your pocket or something?
I seriously think that thing is amazing. I wish it came to Verizon/AT&T, cause my parents hate Sprint, cause of really bad experience, 1000 dollars in roaming charges anyone?
T-Mobile doesn't have that great service in my area, so people don't get it unless they're only using it for voice.
The only thing that I think is gonna be bad is that even subsidized, its gonna be at least 150, well we can only hope and see. Nokia World is coming and then we'll see whether this is gonna be Nokia's flagship phone, if it is they will be releasing the US I just know it.
At least 150? Try again and at least 2.5x that amount.
Oh scuzzi, pa para puppi?
Che fa l'aria rimbombar.
Poppo pappa pippi!

what kind of ancient language is this ??
The rotary zoom is an interesting solution to the one-handed zooming problem. It seem like it might get annoying though. I prefer Apple's double-click to zoom solution better.
i has double-click also. check the earlier vids.
@ jinushaun
They give you the option to either use that rotary zoom or a double click.
I heard it was copied from Touch Pro's HTC interface (what's the name again). anyway, it needs to be more responsive .. can't afford to keep doing that forever ... copying is how apple is so good ... except they do it very well ... i really want this phone ... getting this unlocked ...
You can use the hardware volume keys to zoom as well, which works pretty nicely.
Only problem is that you then find yourself struggling to turn the volume down when a website starts blasting loud sound at you.
Read somewhere it was 500 euros...
Forgive the ignorance, does this have a front facing camera? I'd love the thought of being able to video conference with anybody in the world and/or share my surroundings with them.
it does
