Windows Mobile 6.5 cellphones coming October 6th
Unfortunately for those on the hunt for nitty-gritty details, the headline here just about says it all. In a shockingly vague release from Microsoft, the Redmond-based giant has announced that the first batch of Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets will launch on October 6th, or around three weeks after its Zune HD. If we're reading this correctly, it looks as if this round of cellies will be the first to be called "Windows phones," and aside from promising "new customer experiences" and superior browsing capabilities, they'll also feature Windows Marketplace for Mobile (an app store), Microsoft My Phone (a backup service) and Office Mobile. As for what phones we'll see, all we're told is that HTC, HP, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony Ericsson and a few other big time players are onboard, with just about every carrier in the world (save for T-Mobile USA) also voicing their support.

Do you think I'll finally be able to update my i-mate JAM? They abandoned me back when with Windows Mobile 2003.
Check xda-devs; Cotulla already has WM6.5 running on the imate JAM (HTC Magician).
Next commenter is gay.
Hey babe.
mobile 6.5 makes me wanna throw up. however im somehow still confident that microsoft can really surprise us with mobile 7 next year
This is exciting!
Or would have been... in like 1999.

The icon for Puzzles is a direct rip-off from AVG anti-virus. How strange.
As for the release of 6.5 - couldn't care less. Seems like this new OS is already (way) behind Android, WebOS and iPhone OS.
I just hope the Windows Mobile fanboys who do the Engadget Podcast don't spend this week's whole episode talking about this crap.
It is behind how? do you even know what you talking about?
You obviously haven't used 6.5 then. I have. I have also used Android, the Pre, and the iPhone. 6.5 is my favorite - by far. And that's a pre-release build. 6.5 does have it's flaws - no question. But this mindless assault on Windows Mobile is absurd. Try using it first before you dismiss it out of hand.
Way behind in what sense? Multitasking? App availability? What?
My wife has an iPhone 3GS. There is absolutely nothing she can do on her phone that I can't on my Fuze running WinMo 6.5, and there are lots of things I can do that she can't. Now, she loves her phone and that's fine, and I don't dislike the iPhone interface. But the OS itself is not more advanced than Windows Mobile. An OS is more than an interface.
We are about at the stage with mobile phones where you're comparing Windows XP to Mac OS 9. I mean, I don't care how pretty the interface is, you are talking about a phone that's still making a big deal out of copying and pasting, for God's sake, actually advertising a fairly basic feature that has been on WinMo for years.
Maybe you don't like how WinMo looks (though you're not seeing it up there), but the OS itself is pretty far ahead of the iPhone OS.
Ewww. Not surprised tho. WinMo has always been crap, and will continue to be crap for some time to come apparently.
The UI looks like complete $hit and it's sad that the M$ burry brigade and fanboy Engadget won't admit that.
It's a web page, Einstein.
Stop sniffing glue.
No, it is the Marketplace in the pic actually. Though most people would have seen the actual 6.5 UI's that have been in the news and videos to know it looks bad compared to other OS's, but at least a small improvement for Windows Mobile.
October? Like it's not late enough already? The big question is, will carriers allow people with 6.0 to upgrade to 6.5?
Unfortunately as soon as you pay them to cook up an official 6.5 rom. That's why I stick to XDA Developers. Im running 6.5 on my T-mobile dash and it's smooth as silk.
Wow, the update is choc full of 6.5 newsness
I've been looking forward to the Touch Pro2 for Verizon, which looks like it is shipping with WinMo 6.1. I'd really love to see them roll out a ROM update to 6.5 once this OS hits. I've done the custom ROM thing, which is fine, but an official ROM from the carrier is more solid in my experience.
Why does th e puzzles icon look like the AVG logo?
Meh! I abandoned WM 2 days ago after being loyal since 1999. I added the cooked 6.5 ROM to my Dash. I have to admit, Dash works ALOT better on 6.5 than 6.0. Now learning the BB OS with a Curve 8900. The worse part of the BB OS for now is seems like I'm playing Eve Online with a tiny trackball. I have to get used to the innacuracy of the trackball compared to a button.
And that damn trackball is giving me carpal tunnel with all the clicking required of it! I'm trying to figure out to reduce this, the kb shortcuts help somehwat.
Is it just me, or does the "Puzzles" icon look WAY too similar to the AVG logo?
all I want to know is, wtf does the AT$T update news about the wifi access have anything to do with the story of windows mobile 6.5. are all your editors bunch of morons, engadget? how about just put your at$t update into a at$t related story, instead of this one.
From the main article:
"As for what phones we'll see, all we're told is that HTC, HP, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Sony Ericsson and a few other big time players are onboard, WITH JUST ABOUT EVERY CARRIER IN THE WORLD...."
--> AT&T is included in the group "just about every carrier in the world" and the article is about Windows Mobile.
Update:
"AT&T has informed us that starting on September 14th, customers with Wi-Fi-enabled Windows Mobile smartphones..."
-->This blurb is about both AT&T and Windows Mobile smartphones.

Do you see a connection? This game is the opposite of "which is these is not like the other."
I guess there won't be much demand for Windows Mobile devices since Android is replacing them. Windows 7 for mobile is a long, long, way off.
I like windows 7 and what microsoft has been doing. I think this new os and everything they release from now on will contain that experience of hell and bad image they have had for so long. They will release quality made for more than owning the market but to actually have the customers feel like "damn this is quality". Maybe I am a dreamer.
It costs so long time to update.
