74 percent of PS3 owners have watched a Blu-ray, but how many have watched two?
Sony may be working to expand the perception of the PS3 as a media powerhouse with half-hearted bundles and new advertising campaigns, but according to SCEA Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel, it's already doing quite well in that department. He indicates that 74 percent of all PS3 users have "spent some time" watching Blu-ray movies, with barely a quarter left shunning the machine's high-def creds. Of course, the real question for Sony's sake is how many have gone ahead and purchased some of those fancy discs, a stat that Lempel doesn't share, but regardless we have to think it's time for Sony to stop putting tedious advertisements for Blu-ray players at the beginning of its Blu-ray discs -- we've already got one, you see? It's very nice!

I have watched several. I only own one though because they are so expensive. If I do watch one, it is rented.
I watched SpiderMan 3 & the latest Fast & Furious. That's it so far. (Both were pretty terrible movies but the quality was remarkable!) LOL
This seems like a really ignorant post, filled with obvious fanboy-ism (not that that really surprises me on the internet...).
The whole "PS3 sucks" argument used to be that it was only good for watching BDs... why is it difficult to accept that 74% of PS3 owners have watched a bluray? Personally I own almost 50 of them, and haven't bought many recently. I also have a friend who owns Watchmen on BD, his first BD purchase, and watches it on a SD set. Even if you don't have an HDTV, you will some day, why pay for DVDs?
OHNOES! Sony said something, better make a point of posting negativity about it!
I understand the appeal of having the highest quality available and collecting, but I can't bring myself to put a disc in to watch a movie or tv show anymore. I hope online streaming and download quality continues to increase, including whatever services the consoles offer.
LOL That's funny I have never saw a BluRay on my PS3. Simply because I didn't have a HDTV so there was no point in renting or buying a BluRay movie. But now that I have a HD LCD Monitor I might pickup batman and rent a few other movies.
I guess I'm one of the few that actually owns a PS3 and with Netflix, so I tend to rent most movies in BluRay if they are available. The major problem is that there really isn't much of a BluRay selection compared to the vast DVD library of movies out there. This will probably change since BluRay players are dropping in price considerably, and it's really hard to find an SD TV at most stores nowadays.
OK, I am someone who previously owned a PS3. Ironically, at the time we got it, we got it primarily for Blue Ray and other online, with a few games tossed in.
After a couple of movies refused to play, we cancelled the blue ray from netflix and just watched regular dvd's. (I can't recall which movies, but when we looked online it seemed that tons of people had problems with those specific movies on blue ray on the ps3)
Shortly after that, someone got us an upscaling DVD player and after a month, we weren't even turning the ps3 on anymore. So after a total of just UNDER three months, it went back to Wal-Mart for a full refund, and a new Wii, which six months later we are still using almost daily.
I only bought 1 Blue-Ray movie, but quite frankly, I am perfectly happy with upscaled DVD's. I honestly am waiting for a reason to look at blue-ray again, but only because I want a player that does Netflix. (Roku is more likely)
At this point, until Blue-Ray's are price matching dvd's or at least within a buck or two, I just don't see the point, and I would guess most consumers probably are doing the same thing.
Maybe you should be blaming netflix, because there were many complaints about netflix regarding bluray. I got about 15 blueray. 8 were free and bought 5-7 of them, not one time did I have problem playing bluray on the ps3. After watching bluray, it's hard for me to go back to standard...you just notice everything that you didn't see before. Tree's actually have leaves as oppose to a big clump of green stuff on standard def.
I had a Blu-ray from Netflix refuse to play once. Never had problems with any of my purchased Blu-rays.
Upscaled DVD just DVD. And I am not in the least happy with DVD anymore. It's just not high res enough.
I also am building a collection of Blu-ray movies, I buy them from Block Buster second hand which is great scratch free and for movies like "The Dark Night" I buy new.
I have about 15 movies now and counting.
once the criterion collection starts releasing all the old Janus imports of old samurai movies and french art films my blu-ray collection will increase
1 50" Samsung 1080p DLP tv
1 PS3 connected via HDMI
1 BluRay disc (A Christmas Story)
A Blu Ray disc that's still in the wrapping.
Yeah, that's a really low quality transfer anyway, so don't sweat it. It might as well be a DVD.
I use my PS3 for watching Blu-Rays & DVDs - I even don't have a standalone DVD-Player anymore...
I know some people who purchased the PS3 because it was a better value then a stand alone Blu-Ray player (at the time it cost less to go with a PS3!)
So those people bought a Blu-Ray player and have spent a little to no time playing Video Games when not watching a movie.
I imagine that represents a small fraction of the owners of the PS3.
I use my PS3 daily. Playing games, check mail with the browser, shopping, playing bluray movies, streaming standard def video from my computer using TVersity, hell it even does karaoke. I use it to store and display all my photos. So yeah this thing is well worth the money. I don't see any other versatile device that does all that for the price. This think stays on almost all the time. And when I'm not using it, I'm still using it to better mankind by foldding@home.
I think the better question is, given that the PS3 is a great blu-ray player, what percentage have played PS3 games?
I have one ps3 40gb (upgraded to 250)
I have one SDTV. I have one blu-ray movie.
It came with the console. I have never even opened it.
It is spiderman or something. I play around the same amount of games & movies on it.
They should just distribute blu-ray discs digitally so I don't have to run tsmuxer and mkvmerge over and over. Physical media is so 20th century.
don't have an HD tv, so I don't have any blu-rays. Someday though... a boy can dream.
LOL BluRay is all I use it for. If I wanted to INSTALL Games and patches that take forever I would use my Uber PC.... ONly a handfull of games would qualify for my patiance on the PS3. :-P
Got about 30-35 Blue-Rays, 80Gig PS3, 50in Plasma. About 6 PS3 games and a couple PS2 games. Playing Battlefield 1943 alot on it at the moment. I'm buying 1 new BR every other month or so. Never had a Playstation before this. I was always happier with my Nintendo. Now I have a Wii but hardly play it... to few good games.
I liked the Monty Python reference...
"I told him we already got one!"

Just bought PS3 slim, mostly catching up on GTA4 and little big planet. will wait for Last Guardian and Final Fantasy. Bought Band of Brothers and Dark Knight in blu-ray, but i have a feeling i will use it very little for blu-ray since there are only a few movies out there that are blu-ray worthy and a few of those i will likely want to own, the rest have production values that is not full HD and not worth a pricey bluray. I think i'll keep my netflix without bluray addition, if the movie looks good i watch in theaters before and buy it later on bluray if its awesome otherwise if i missed it then i rent it in regular dvd perhaps to exercise my old PS2 once in a while.
i have over 40 blu ray movies and over 80 ps3 games and over 50 psn games also i
would like an update when you boot a bluray movie to say blu ray in big bold letters when it boots
like the playstation 3 logo used to do now its black :(
With all the Sci Fi movies coming out nowadays blue ray just seems to be getting more and more relevant. This year alone with the release of GIJoe, Transformers, Monsters VS Aliens, it would be worth the purchase of a PS3 and I can believe this 74% statistic.
for me 50/50 i have a good bluray collection and games i use my ps3 i think 2 maybe 3 times a weeks for bluray movies i play and also do a lot of video streaming from my PC
I have a PS3, but I don't have an HD TV so there is no point in me watching a blu-ray movie on it. However, I did rent a blu-ray movie once cause they didn't have the dvd version in stock. So yeah, I fall under the category of have watched only 1 blu-ray movie on my PS3.
I bought like 2 or 3 Blu-Ray movies and say no real difference on a Viso tv or a Sony Wega so I bought the HDMI cable and honestly call me old fashion but it really wasn't serious enough to spend $20 extra on a movie especially when used DVDs drop yo like $8 a week after the movie is released.
I've owned a PS3 since launch (60GB model with full backwards compatibility) and true, I got 5 free blu-ray movies with it. I've since bought about 15 more and yes, they're nice to watch on my 47" 1080p LCD TV but I have to say... where are all the 1080p games? I can watch Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda all day to get a true high def experience but I'd much rather see games like Battlefield Bad Company or RSV2 in 1080.
Alas, I've actually resorted to watching more downloaded titles in standard definition streamed off my PC via Media Server rather than have a bunch of pieces of media floating around my entertainment center. And the price of blu-ray titles is slowly coming down. It'll be quite some time until we see them get down to the current average price of DVDs.
Here's something I don't get though... why is it that I see games like Prototype on Craigslist for $30 but it's $60 in the stores? Is there really that much of a price drop because the game is used but still in working condition? And don't even get me started on how many used blu-ray titles are out there on the cheap!!
Looking forward to the following Blu-Ray releases...
Star Trek
Xmen Origin’s - Wolverine
Lord of the Rings (The entire collection)
Terminator - Rise of the machines
All to be released by year end!!
How many PS3 owner run linux on their machine? That's what I would like to know. No surprise they drop linux support for the slim.
I did at one time, but I quickly found that without GPU access it's fairly gimped. They really should have opened that up a bit more.
what? my ps3 has blu-ray??? (sarcasm)
Seriously though, the only blu-ray discs i own came with my ps3 and i only would ever watch of of those movies, sad part is the movie was filmed before hdtv was even possible so its seriously pointless.
This survey pretty much sums up my experience, and the people I know who own PS3's experience. I have 5 Panasonic Plasmas in my house, 2 wii's, an xbox 360, and a fully backward compatible ps3. The one and only time I have ever watched a blu-ray is when i send my nine year old daughter to blockbuster to rent rambo for me, and she got the blu-ray on accident. Incidentally it was also the last time anyone in my family has been to blockbuster too. We are a redbox family now.
I have a handful of friends that own ps3's and i don't think any of them own a single blu-ray.
I own over 40 BD movies... I own about 10 PS3 disc games... and about 10 DL games... I have used it for youTUBE, movies, games ( PS, PS2, PS 3, DL) , music, and photo viewing. Yes I listed PS2 cause I own a 60 GB model.
I have been a proud owner of the PS3 and will continue to be one. And yes I have a 42" HDTV since i saw a few comments saying that PS3 owners don't have an HDTV.
+3 for me. Frankly, xbox has such a better controller feel and intuitive UI. I have both ps3 and xbox, and I've tried renting the same game to play on both systems, and I always do better on xbox. So I really only use my ps3 for bluray. Can't wait till xbox comes out with bluray support, so I can get rid of my ps3 and current xbox to get just one console.
As for HDTV, you really only notice a difference from SD to HD if you're sitting close enough so that the screen diagonal and your distance from the screen is no less than 1:3... ideally 1:1.5. I don't understand people that get small HDTV and sit way the hell far back. If you've ever played COD4 on a 10ft HD projector screen with full surround sound, you'd know the difference. Diddo for bluray movies.
2 Blu-ray movies watched for me.
Would be more if i could afford to rent them.
Would be More if i could afford to Buy them.
Would be More if i could Download them from their store.
