Clearwire goes live with WiMAX service in ten new markets
Just as we expected, Clearwire has lit up its CLEAR WiMAX services in ten new markets. Beginning today, those with a thirst for ultra-speedy mobile broadband can sink their teeth into those delicious 4G airwaves so long as you call one of the following locales home: Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Killeen/Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Waco and Wichita Falls, Texas; Bellingham, Wash; or Boise, Idaho. We fully expect a smattering of other markets to see similar launches as the Fall progresses, but if you just can't wait, well -- there's always vacation.

You do realize that WiMAX has a 2Mbps limit in it's current form, right?
2mbp/s is pretty good im only able to download at 1.8 mbp/s with the cable package i brought and with clearwire i can do anywhere.
only SPRINT wimax. The Clearwire product is showing some serious speeds.

Clear is selling 6Mbps down/512Kbps up in the Atlanta area- but I can usually get sustained speeds of 8Mbps...
One small issue is that the Clear signal is a bit unpredictable; I will get 8Mbps for a few days and then it drops down to 2Mbps. If I move the modem about 4 feet, it is back up to 8Mbps. And a few day later I need to move the modem back to its original position as the speed has flipped again...
How is the latency? That is the most important aspect for online gaming.
"How is the latency? That is the most important aspect for online gaming."
Clear is absolutely not for gaming. You will also get those speeds when no one is on it, then they will use the excuse like they did with 3g.
OK - pre wimax markets those in small or rural areas; 4G coming to you too soon. Speeds 2x what you get now.
Also there is a 4G/3G device sold and provisioned by Clearwire. It runs 4G when wimax is available and on Sprints EV-DO network when only 3G is available. Sprint has no 4G network - its Clearwires they run on.
wow, why did they pick all of the crap TX cities? Guess they figure they can't provide to the metropolitan areas yet.
Exactly what I was thinking. Waco? Really? But I suppose that a major city is a bit more work and requires more than a few towers. But still...waco...
I believe these were original fixed wimax Clearwire markets. It was relatively simple to upgrade them to mobile.
I can see in one sense why they're providing it to places like Boise, ID, where the county's population was 7,504 as of last summer. In those rural areas, high-speed internet is probably pretty scarce, so people would love to have Wimax. Besides, now Farmer Brown can enjoy Hulu from his laptop while he's riding in his harvesting vehicle on his potato field.
So while that's admirable, I doubt that's the real reason they're doing it in places like that . . . it's cause they can't handle the demand of a place like Miami-Dade/Broward/Palm Beach FL.
Ryan, the population of Boise is 200K. It is the largest city in Idaho.
Ryan: If there are only 7500 people in Boise, why am I stuck in traffic every night on my way home?
You were looking at the statistics for Boise county, not Boise city. Boise county is indeed rural, but the city is definitely not.
Ryan - I think you need to update your Population Counter. Boise has been breeding like rabbits (can you think MUD LAKE from about 25 years ago???).
Boise - I'd guess it is also in the running due to some company that is building tech for them (CradlePoint)... not to mention that Clear's folks like to visit Boise more than places like... say... your house?
Just joshing some fun at you - don't take it personally...
==== my real question ====
Is anyone gaming on Clear (the wimax, not the pre-wimax - I know that sucked!)
(db)
why are they only launching in small cities and rural areas. when are they going to go live in NYC or Miami ?
NYC is a 2010 city (it takes a bit more time to cover NYC vs. Waco ;-))
How is it that El Paso (far west texas) always gets shafted? Sprint/Verizon put EVDO in midland/odessa years before El Paso. El Paso has almost a million people! I just don't get it.
Yeah!! I waited for years for 3g from ATT. No UVerse even though it was promised. Are the locals in HD on satellite available yet?
Glad I moved back to DC...except the weather :-(
Million people mean nothing to the MegaGlobeCorps out there??
I have had Clear WiMax in Atlanta for about 2 months- and I just received my 4th 'an excessive amount of Internet traffic on your Clear connection is negatively impacting other Clear customers in your area' notice..
They sold me a 6mbps 'unlimited' connection and now they pull an old Comcast play on me... Sheez!
That's ClearWire's game plan man, read the fine print. If they decide they don't like how much you're using your connection, they'll throttle it or charge you. I've had it for two weeks and I'm cancelling; I've already gotten warnings for excessive use that's supposedly damaging to the network. Evidently they REALLY don't like Steam.
As Wichita falls so falls Wichita Falls.
@Kevin
Typical latency is 80-150ms on Wimax (vs. 250-500ms) so likely to high for things like FPS but it's still a wireless connection.
That's cool that they got adam sandler to be a spokesman.
It does look like him a little!!! HA HA
I am looking forward for this to come to grand rapids, mi. It was talked about 2 years ago and now that sprint is working with clearwire.
I can have a fast internet connection at home and on the road!
Right now I can only get 6 meg. 8-13 would be real nice!
As far as I can tell, all the WiMax devices do not support any form of 3G/2G as a backup. What good is a 4G device that can only be used in a handful of locations, and is a brick otherwise? Wouldn't it make more sense to market a 4G/3G device?
I'd consider a Samsung Mondi, but without 3G, or even 2G for that matter, it's a no-go.
yeah but it would also make it more expensive and thus not competitive. sprint 4g data service is $10 more than it's regular 3g service.
How is releasing a device that can't be used in 98% of the U.S. competitive?
I'd gladly pay a bit more for 100% usability across the country
Yea if you want to be able to fallback to 3G you need to get the Sprint 4G service instead of the Clear one.
Yea if you want a 3G fall back you need to get the service through Sprint4G with the U300 (their 3G/4G modem). If I'm not mistaken the modem is free on contract and the 3G/4G plan is only $10 more than their 3G plan.
The 3G/4G Service is ~$70 a month and $5.99 lease fee with no contract right now and has no caps on ether service.
my father-in-law has somehow had clearwire for over a year in midland perhaps as some sort of secret test market on it's modest 100k population, but in the past few months he says his connection speeds have dipped into crawls reminiscent of dial-up. another friend of mine has clearwire here in portland, so i'm keeping an eye on him. but, for the meantime i'm content with comcast whose recent speed tests read between 15 and 20 mbps and i continue writing my congressmen in fears of data caps.
An aquaintance of mine left beautiful southwest Florida recently for Atlanta strictly because of the clearwire choice there.
You couldn't pay me a million dollars and free clearwire to move to Atlanta. You can keep your crime and congestion. I 'll keep year round fishin' and swimmin'
But it would be nice to have wimax in the Ft myers / Naples market :)
Everything's WiMaxier in Texas.
Dang it! It appears as though the coverage in Bellingham hasn't changed... only the speed. I live just north of the mall. And still no coverage of Bakerview Road.
Where's the Southern California love? Los Angeles is kind of a big deal, just sayin'.
The WiMax is fine in Portland, come in!
hehe~~~
if you want a 3G fall back you need to get the service from here
