Interesting fact about Berlin: all the buildings here look like spaceships! Also, the city plays host to the IFA tradeshow each year, a sprawling landscape of gadget treasure, and we're here to pick up where we
left off last year. Today we've got a Sony press conference to look forward to, and tomorrow we'll be hit by a tidal wave of announcements from the rest of the industry -- or at least that's the plan. We'll also be hitting up the show floor soon enough with our pals from
Engadget Spanish and
Engadget German, the latter of which has been dubbed the official blog of the show! Engadget German will also be hosting a reader meetup on Saturday at the convention center, so stand by for more information on that. Naturally, all of this will take place within massive buildings that look like spaceships.
i am here with my coffee.
Where are the "pew, pew, pew"'s ?
I miss those.
BSG!
SG-1!
Dead Space!
On an aside, loved the bridge design on that ship. After battles, I would just stand and look around…
It's the Eagle from Space 1999!
@NetMage: My thoughts exactly.
the pic looks like from space colony...
It does. It almost reminds me of a Rheinland Cruiser from Freelancer. I'm just waiting for it to blast off and start shooting missiles at me.
Isn't it one of those atmosphere processing units from Aliens?
They are transformers!
I wish I lived someplace where the buildings were all spaceships...
Oh good, I'm not the only one who thinks that building looks like it could pick up and move itself.
You are not alone... I love it.
Ya, I love that architecture. I have no idea why, since at first glance it looks like a beat up old piece of concrete, but damn it is awesome.
What did they do, rent a freakin heli to take that pic???
No, that picture was taken from the stardeck of the mother ship.
It looks like the ship from "Space 1999". A terrible show, fwiw.
I don't envy you.
the spanish and german links are switched
Cute how the engadget spanish goes to german and the german link goes to spanish, bringing nation together.
Welcome to Berlin :-)
Come on projectors!
The buildings in fact ARE spaceships.
So are the pyramids. Go Engadget Egypt!
Don't go into this building! It's an alien trap. After decoying people with colorful new technologies this Martian spaceship will lift off and bring you to their penal colonies on the backside of the moon as it did the years before. Do you actually know anyone who has returned from IFA?
Actually there's a clue about this in the article, when it says "...and we're here to pick up where we left off last year".
@teetlebomb: +1 for Daniel Jackson
Nice building.
-it looks like an entire section slides out for docking.
Spaceship buildings be damned, I say. Well done ENGADGET for being the official bloggers.
Anyone spotted the Xperia x2? over at the sony booth? 20$ bounty! send it to @?@?@gmail.com :)
Congrats!
And that's not even a new building--I can't imagine what people must have thought when it was built. (Probably a few people wandered around, looking for Lorne Greene....)
The ICC was build during 1975-1979 (opening was on the 2nd of April in 1979)
"When the ICC Berlin opened on 2rd April 1979 it elevated the German capital into a
major league, alongside global congress destinations. On 2nd April 2009 the ICC
Berlin looks back on 30 years of congresses, and an impressive story of success.
Over a period of 30 years, hosting an overall total of 17,777 congress and show
events attended by approximately 11.1 million participants, the ICC Berlin became
one of the most sought-after event venues in the world. An above-average
attendance and the high number of events held here led to an average of 1.6 events
with 1,014 participants on each of the 10,950 days on which events took place at
ICC Berlin. Over the course of 30 years, Europe's largest conference centre
registered 6.4 million congress participants from around the world who took part in
approximately 16,000 conference events. Of this number, more than 2.9 million
professionals travelled to the German capital from abroad. In addition, over 4.7
million guests visited approximately 1,700 show events such as concerts, musicals,
operas and ballets.
The ICC Berlin is looking into the future with great confidence. Early bookings have
been taken for the year 2019."
Strange architecture? - It's just the perfect harmony of design an technology;)
This would be an EXCELLENT opportunity to get a friend with a monster zoom camera to take a picture of you in the window with a Cylon poster next to you.
Frnk
I was trying to think of a funny comparison for "Official Blog" but i can't think of anything.
awesome building
Space: 1999! When i was in berlin in '97 i saw this building and thought that it looked like a spaceship also!! the wonders of foreign travel....
Oh, you young whippersnappers. That building looks just like the spaceships from Space:1999.
Back in my day, we thought the distant future was 1999. And BSG starred Lorne Greene. And everything cost a nickel!
Still, I think that is easily the coolest looking building I've ever seen.
These comments are derogatory. Women are awesome, despite that weird taco thing they have.
lmao
Hello Berlin friend!!!!
Don't forget to have fun on the K-damm
Only on Engadget would something that fugly be described as an "awesome building".
Engadget ROCKS!!! Thanks for keeping us entertained and informed...
That is like the coolest looking building I've ever seen.
I abandoned Engadget German's feed for a while, now just subscribed to that again and read the news in German.
Anyone else think that the convention center looks a bit like Spaceball One from the back? Minus the engines, of course.
