HTC Touch2 launching October 6th with Windows Mobile 6.5
Hey, HTC -- pull up a chair. Listen, we admire your tenacity and all, but did you realize that both Nokia World and IFA kicked off today? Cool, just making sure. Now that we're past that, we'd like to introduce you (as in, the audience) to one of the world's first "Windows phones," the Touch2. Packing a full touchscreen and an all-too-familiar design (remember the HTC Mega?), this here smartphone will launch with Windows Mobile 6.5, the outfit's TouchFLO interface, Microsoft Exchange support, a redesigned Internet Explorer Mobile and the new My Phone service to back up and sync photos, music, contacts and text messages for free from the Touch2 to the web. There's no word on exact pricing and availability, but it'll be available somewhere in this wide world October 6th, with broad availability in Europe and select Asian markets promised for early Q4.

yay, another windoze phone, how underwhelming.
your a dipshit.
NOW, in reference to reading my comment again while typing this and wishing i could edit it... (i do not usually do this)
you're=YOU ARE
Your=belongs to you
What will be the reason to run WinMo these days? WinMo is ancient as far as market is concerned.
Oh please enlighten us on what your definition of "ancient" entails.
This ought to be funny.
@Steward
Typical comment really:
WinMo is ancient
WinMo is demised
blah blah blah....
please do some research and come up with some informed comments.
Please say something tangible and I will listen.
I guess the market isn't concerned with an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 and they are also not concerned about high end phone to be released next year with Windows Mobile 7?
It means that they have experience. This shown in its underlying functionality and the eons of applications that have been written for it over the years. Did I mention that you can also drastically change the UI? There are a multitude of solutions out there that work well with it. I just wish it ran faster, becomes more stable and was cheaper to get. Symbian is another good OS, although the touch version is a bit weird to work with.
In a market becoming dominated by touch-screen carrying phones (with or without physical keyboards), WinMo can not hold it's own.
WinMo was created for use with a stylus and a d-pad, and with nearly every new phone primarily using capacitive touch screens, WinMo's buttons are too small to be easily usable. HTC has done the best job of solving this with their TouchFLO interface, but for the most part, companies don't do enough to satisfy the newer generation of phones with capacitive touch screens.
WinMo 6.5 is a nice step up, but I still don't think it's enough. WinMo 7 really needs to be completed as soon as possible. I have a feeling it's going to be great (a la Windows 7), so I'm already interested in how it'll turn out.
Right now though, i'm avoiding WinMo as much as possible. There are so many better options.
I agree with you Jarhead.
WinMo 6.5 will do a lot to keep current users from straying but it isn't going to win many new users until WinMo7.
The reason I am still on WinMo is primarily the community. Microsoft need to bring their services together on this platform to make it compelling for the average consumer looking for a great experience out of the box.
The OS itself is good the all round user experience is lacking but is improving.
@jarhead
I dunno, the only time I have had to use a stylus on the Touch Pro 2 is when I need a toothpick. And the TP2 does not have, or need a dpad. HTC has really done a good job skinning WinMo 6.1.
I wouldnt diss windows phones, they are probably more flexible than any other phone out there, I do want to see if 6.5 is an improvement, and if we see any newer versions of touchflo
not to mention they are still leading in security.
There are lots of WM6.5 roms available for existing WM phones; check out xda-developers.com
yes WM 6.5 is alot more finger friendly than 6.1... I just flashed my Touch pro and I love it.
I hope Microsoft finally solved the age-old memory leak problem with its new WM6.5. I am sick and tired of weekly soft-resets.
BOOM! headshot
Nice!;))) want one of these
YES!!! Gonna Buy THis!!
WinMo Rulez!!!!
.
u sure? do not even want to wait for hardware/price.. not even color of box?
I'm not gonna buy another winmo phone until the HTC LEO releases. It's gonna have a capacitive screen and a snapdragon chipset.
Three colors option + Sense UI

No, your momma rulez....take it from me
Yeah it looks pretty, but it`s only a 2.8 QVGA screen. Touch Flo 2d 2 will fly on that chip though. I`m just waiting on Verizon to drop the Whitestone.
that's not SenseUI, that's TouchFLO2D
there is a lot of resentment and disappointment in that article.
That's the HTC Mega. low-cost phone with TouchFlo 2D..
So, bitching about (unconfirmed) resistive touchscreens only happens when it is a Nokia, but not when it's a HTC? Bias much, Engadget?
You don't listen/watch buzz out loud do you? Listen to the latest one regarding the difference between bias and biased!
:-)
Ross and Darren aren't the same person.
Both resistive and capacitive screens each have their pros and cons, it's only natural for people to weigh the factors differently.
I will say, however, that the precision in a resistive screen on a WinMo device generally makes more sense than on a featurephone.
specs??
Sucky specs : ( http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/08/23/new-htc-mega-picture-and-specs/
Needs moar keyboard
hardware zoom? dont get me wrong i rly do like the phone but how many different things use zoom?
XDA-Developers will probably hack it to do a lot more. I use the scroll wheel on my Touch Pro to zoom in on web pages, pictures, and google maps. Plus it can also work like an ipod click wheel to scroll through pages and lists.
Is this the the same thing as the Touch Pro 2?
Nope
The touch pro 2 is high end, WVGA, TouchFlo3D and has slide out keyboard.
This is low end, QVGA, TouchFlo 2D with no keyboard.
To be fair to this phone it has near enough the same hardware specs as the Touch pro 2
Qualcomm 72xx chipset
half the ROM
near enough the same RAM
very similar cameras (this is fixed focus I think where as the TP2 is auto focus)
The only thing holding the phone back is the chipset (like all other htc phones) and the screen resolution.
Huuuuge Yawn :-/
why can't the users choose for themselves the OS they wanna load onto their smartphones?! Who's with me?
Yeah, because all the buttons/internals of the device definitely line up with every smartphone OS. What choices are there? WinMo, Symbian, Android, and maybe some Linux variant. The all seem to have different uses of buttons/internals, and HTC and carriers having to support multiple types of OS on similar phones is ridiculous.
If you want a certain one, get the phone that comes with it. Anyway, WinMo 6.5 is an awesome OS, and I think HTC might make these upgradable to 7.0.
@Quikboy Except that damn near every HTC device is using the same processor, same rom size, and amount of ram.
Considering that there are Android ROMs available for different HTC WinMo phones, you can have that as an option, though it kills battery life (just like a real Android phone, natch)
I'd so want this. It's really too bad though that it's still expensive when subsidized with the carriers. I wouldn't want to spend more than $200 on a smartphone. It's ridiculous how this can work for the iPhone, but this HTC device costs a whole lot more. HTC really needs to find a way to cut costs.
My touch pro`s screen wobbles, there`s what look like an oil stain on the screen (something to do with the adhesive in the layer of the screen), and there a big gap between the screen and the bottom buttons. I think that they should put the money they`re asking into quality control. I`ve heard of people having to replace the touch pros 3 and 4 times, HTC need to step it up. My original touch never had any issues, despite being made out of plastic it felt very well solid as a high end device should. I think that they`re trying to push out way to many new models these days. They should stick to making a few very good handsets. That said I`ll still be the first in line to get Verizon`s diamond 2, cause I`m just a HTC whore.
I think it's great we are really seeing a barrage of new phones. Competition can only be good for all of us when it comes to choice.
Is the picture in the article "offical"? Looking at the top edge of the picture of the back of the phone (on the left)... it looks like little round silver ring... is that a 3.5 mm jack?... I've seen pictures of the TP2 with the jack on the bottom edge... but not on the top edge.
This new article says that it does have a 3.5 mm jack
http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2009/09/02/htc-announce-the-htc-touch2
remember this isn't the Touch Pro2...
Since this phone is fully compatable with AT&Ts network, how would I buy or where would I buy from?
WOW Comprehension is my friend. For some reason I kept reading TouchPro2 instead of Touch2. I was like well which carrier? Sprint not releasing the TP2 with WM6.5. Then I read it again! OHHHHH!! LOL I guess I'm so stoked about the TP2 for Sprint realeasing sometime soon.
Just commenting to say that htc consistantly have the best looking phones out there. Too bad it's not possible to get webOS on some of these bad boys.
I'll wait til early next Spring when the Touch2 is $79.99 (no contract) or Free with a haircut.
Who's gonna be able to pay +$500 in this down economy when they can turn around and just give in to ATT for a $99 Iphone.
whoever said it earlier. HTC needs a way to cut costs and bring their phones down to a reasonable price point.
