Nokia's X6 follows the 5800's footsteps, while the X3 brings Ovi Store to Series 40

We'd be tempted to use the word "featurephone" on the X6 (pictured) if it wasn't Nokia behind the handset, pumping the relatively chubby 0.55-inch thick form factor with 32GB of storage, a 5 megapixel camera, a dual LED flash, TV-out, and a 3.2-inch touchscreen. The phone is also a Comes with Music only handset, so don't expect to get all boring and old with this phone in your pocket -- or to pay for a voice plan that doesn't include the service. Otherwise, the phone seems to be a slightly slimmed down Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, sporting the same OS, A-GPS (with Ovi Maps), and we suppose a similar resistive touchscreen. Nokia was kind enough to include a free copy of Spore along with the Ovi Store, and plans to ship the handset in Q4 2009 for 459 Euros (about $652 US) before subsidy.
The X3 is a much tamer affair than the X6, offering a 2.2 non-touchscreen, a slide-out keypad, and Series 40 for an OS. There's a 3.2 megapixel camera, but you'll have to spring for a microSD card if you need significant onboard storage. What's new is that the X3 is the first Series 40 handset to include the Ovi Store, which should help it edge out the competition when it comes to functionality. The price isn't bad either, at 115 Euros (about $163 US) before subsidy. It'll be out in Q4 as well.
Update: We've added a brief video after the break.

Oooh, the X6 is pretty.
X6 is pretty! Engadget are posting "relatively chubby" it is 1.5mm thicker than iPhone?
Engadget hates Nokia, they've made this clear over and over in the last few weeks (just listen to the last podcast, for example).
Also, what's with the "featurephone" remark about the X6? It's more smartphone than the iPhone ever was - multitasking is in the very definition of smartphone!
Yes, it's stupid to perpetuate this asinine phone labeling, as "smart" or otherwise. I doubt there's a phone on the market that doesn't have enough computing power to match the features of an 8 MB Palm OS device of a decade or more ago; yet so few of them offer the simple but important functionality of those devices.
Even the iPhone lacks basic PDA functions like memos with categories, to-do lists, and the means to sync those things with the computer. And NO, there's not an app for that, because Apple inexplicably prevents developers' apps from syncing with apps on the computer (unless you want to use some hokey workaround, like an intermediary server on the Internet somewhere or a wireless kluge).
I feel its better than the ipod touch with camera (if so) , anyone agree
just for everyone else, looking at the promo video for the x6, things to note:
* Solid Glass Screen (capacitive?)
* The games in the promo are using two thumbs to play (multi-touch?)
* Kinetic Scrolling (seen in ovi store and contact bar)
Looking at the video for the Sims, it doesn't look the dodgy 2d sprites version? maybe a better CPU?
Yea the X6 does look nice, but when will Nokia learn about lower prices. Making a phone with similar specs as the 5800 shouldn't throw the price up $200. You can't make ground in this time of day with a phone that offers so little yet costs so much.
The CPU is 433 MHz. Before everyone goes mental that's plenty enough to run S60v5 smoothly. As for being a cap screen... don't know yet but it's not really an issue anyway.
nooo kidding, that is one sexy phone! I never thought I'd be applying that adjective to a cellphone.
it looks good...
and engadget plz stop hating nokia
@ The Chef: I wasn't aware that the Nokia XM 5800 came with 32GB of onboard storage.
@mj: It's not a conspiracy, no one said the iPhone is thin. It's just that many phones today are slimmer relative to the devices other proportions.
I wish this was the First nokia phone with a capacitive screen...
wish it WERE the first
@information central: no he is right. Was is correct not were. Had he said "I wish they was" then your correction would be right.
Information Central is correct. When the subjunctive mood expresses an idea or a statement that is contrary or hypothetical to real present (as per lawyer bird's usage), the past form of the "to be" verb is always "were", regardless of the subject, gender, and number.
apparently it has one. this is the first phone i've been really interested in getting in a long time! can't wait to see tons of demo vids online
Lookin' good!
Engadget says, its a slightly slim than 5800, i guess, it quite slimmer than 5800 with more features than 5800.
I have to see the full technical spec sheet before commenting this phone.
Thanks for logging in to tell us that, Your Honor.
No problem, it looks like it has more than meet the eye. That's why.
Engadget you forgot that Comes With Music is inluded with both phones, in fact both are only availeable with it.
For once, I'd like to see a nice thin touchscreen/large screen phone, without the bulk of a camera (+ flash) and storage for mp3s/video.
nobody would buy it.
Not nobody, but not many. T
There is a small market for noncamera phones. Some employers don't like phones with cameras.
This site is one reason why some development houses frown on camera phones.
Why would I buy X6 if for a few more bucks I could get the N900?
Because with X6 you get unlimited music downloads?
There are these things called market segments you know...
Not everyone has the same tastes and needs.
@ Eric
There are these things called actual questions you know.
@JCIa,
you need to watch the keynote of Anssi Vanjoki to understand why the X6 is priced like this.
He also compares the ComesWithMusic with iTunes, so better watch it. I won't waste my
time in explaining you. :)
Wow! I'd like to see one up close, I bet It'll lead to gadget lust, moreso if it's AMOLED like Omnia HD.

"We'd be tempted to use the word "featurephone" on the X6"
It is more a smartphone than that other phone will ever be. Give it up Engadget, stop being a troll and report news with neutrality in mind. Or are you still mad that your attempt to get a money hat from Nokia failed?
The stupid part is labeling phones "smart" or something else. It's a BS excuse for inexcusably bad phone and software design. Take Motorola, selling phones years ago with 32MB of memory but no addresses in the contact list. My 8MB Handspring Visor held every address, phone number, calendar, memo, and to-do list I had; yet a 32 MB device was rendered useless for most of those things because of piss-poor software design.
Apologists dismissed this shambles with, "Oh, well, you need a SMART phone to do that stuff."
BULLSHIT. You need simple competence in software design and that's it. And we've seen that Motorola is sadly lacking in both that department and the physical design department.
Well it's just as well that two thirds of the world are familiar with Nokia's UI then, isn't it?
If they call this feature phone then iPhone must be dub phone for Engadget.
*Dumb phone
Engadget sucks big time when it comes to Nokia.
The phone is definitely Sexy.
WOW!Amazing indeed
this phone has a capactive touch screen.
How do you know that?
I don't have what info acizane has, but I have noticed that the specifications mention "scratch proof glass" screen.
Glass sounds like capacitive and not resistive.
http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-x6/specifications
It is definitely capacitive. Know someone who is testing one.
Go to http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-x6/specifications
Take a look at the point "wide touch screen" - it says "...made from scratch-resistant glass"; clearly a capacitive touchscreen.
I wonder if Engadget will amend the post and remove the snarky resistive TS remark (how come the HTC Touch 2 post didn't get one of those, anyway, Engadget? Loving HTC while hating on Nokia, huh?)...
@L
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
Oh good one! Tears in my eyes there!
Although, in fairness, I think it'll be resistive because it offers full handwriting recognition and has a mini QWERTY keyboard.
Unless, of course, they've found a way to do that with a cap screen whcih would be awesome.
To my understanding, the X6 has a capacitive touch screen.
X6:
1) I wouldn't call 13.7mm chubby.
2) Not a featurephone? This is the equivalent of a 32Gb iPod touch with 5MP cam and UNLIMITED music? Dudes, get real - this is a pretty amazing device!
X3:
So, S40 now also has an app store? I think it's time we admit that S40 is also a smartphone OS, and all own up to the fact that Nokia probably sells 90% of the world's smartphones
Does it have addresses for the entries in the contact list? Does it have memos and to-do lists with categories? A good calendar? The ability to sync all that with Outlook and other PIMs?
If not, it's a failure at 32 MB where a Palm device of 10 years ago could do all that with 8 MB.
