Nokia's X6 follows the 5800's footsteps, while the X3 brings Ovi Store to Series 40

We'd be tempted to use the word "featurephone" on the X6 (pictured) if it wasn't Nokia behind the handset, pumping the relatively chubby 0.55-inch thick form factor with 32GB of storage, a 5 megapixel camera, a dual LED flash, TV-out, and a 3.2-inch touchscreen. The phone is also a Comes with Music only handset, so don't expect to get all boring and old with this phone in your pocket -- or to pay for a voice plan that doesn't include the service. Otherwise, the phone seems to be a slightly slimmed down Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, sporting the same OS, A-GPS (with Ovi Maps), and we suppose a similar resistive touchscreen. Nokia was kind enough to include a free copy of Spore along with the Ovi Store, and plans to ship the handset in Q4 2009 for 459 Euros (about $652 US) before subsidy.
The X3 is a much tamer affair than the X6, offering a 2.2 non-touchscreen, a slide-out keypad, and Series 40 for an OS. There's a 3.2 megapixel camera, but you'll have to spring for a microSD card if you need significant onboard storage. What's new is that the X3 is the first Series 40 handset to include the Ovi Store, which should help it edge out the competition when it comes to functionality. The price isn't bad either, at 115 Euros (about $163 US) before subsidy. It'll be out in Q4 as well.
Update: We've added a brief video after the break.

@Information Central
It does all those things.
I cant reply to you people, but i can confirm its capactive.
while typing a message you will by default have a regular gsm keyboard.
If you twist it to its side you will get a full qwerty keyboard!
GSM is a standard for transmitting data over airwaves. It is not a type of keyboard.

Solid Glass Touch Screen! I wonder what that means?
hmmm Capacitive Screen which all the senior editors begging for ?
It means you don't have to eliminate it from contention just yet.
Any non-clamshell phone with a plastic screen is crap.
Keys and input method
* Finger-operated touch screen for text input and user interface control (alphanumeric keypad, full and mini QWERTY keyboard, handwriting recognition, full screen handwriting for Chinese language)
* Dedicated Media Bar touch key for access to music, gallery, share online, Video Centre and web browser
* Voice commands
* Physical keys for application launch (menu key), send and end, power, camera, lock, volume up and down
* Dedicated personal Contacts Bar touch key for direct access to contacts, feeds and status updates
No stylus mentioned, thus Capacitive
I doubt it's capacitive if it has handwriting recognition.
But what will the nokia hating engadget editors whine about if this phone has a capacitive touchscreen? They'll have to find something new.
@G: Exactly my thoughts...
If it runs the standard Symbian S60 v5 then RUBBISH, no flick scrolling on all menus & no word Correction/Suggestion No thanks, if it has to have an updated Symbian S60 or Symbian Foundation then Yes other wise nokia is loosing the touchscreen Smartphone war…. Shame.
All new S60 v5 devices after the 5800/N97 (like the 5530) have kinetic scrolling, and the N97 will get it in October with firmware v2.0.
Also, 10 million 5800's sold up to now and the N97 selling at a faster pace than the N95 was? Doesn't sound like "loosing the war" to me.
S60v5 is getting firmware updates for kinetic scrolling. Predictions were for a September release. Considering the timing of this phone's release, this phone should come out of the box with the updated S60v5 firmware and that firmware should also be released for the other S60v5 phones that need it, eg 5800XM.
Thanks for the reply I did not know they have or will be adding flick/kinetic scrolling to all menus, but do u know if Symbian will FINALY have word correction/suggestion, I have used Android, windows mobile & Symbian touchscreen phones & u can type much faster on them compared to Symbian because it suggests the word & you press space bar & it finished the word, I think this is a fatal mistake not to have this on a Symbian touchscreen phone.
@Paul
I agree - the lack of a predictive dictionary is a badly missing feature that needs implemented as soon as possible.
My N97 does have a predictive text option on the qwerty as well as the T9. I don't usually use it though so can't realy comment how effective it is.
Not much love coming from the Engadget crew even though this phone looks awesome.
The Engadget crew is probably upset they didn't get flown in like everyone else who is giving proper coverage to this event.
i am disappointed i wanted it to have maemo 5 :|.....
Sorry, after the n900 the next Maemo nokia is scheduled for may 2010.
Wow, N97 has sold two million units already. Don't expect to see these numbers posted by Engadget though. Engadget likes to conceal the facts about Nokia's success and keep playing this little power game. I guess they figured they could somehow use their influence to hinder Nokia and help the greater good...
Anyway, Nokia also reports it has sold over ten million touchscreen phones in the last 10 months. How many models did they have? Two? Nice. I wonder what happens now that they've proved their concept and start to roll out touch screen phones in a way no other manufacturer can.
x6 got capacitive screen. Could you fix it engadget?
that x6 is one sexy phone, nokia has turned their design around a bit here
The X6 looks like the prototype phone on the Nvidia Tegra website - http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_tegra_apx_us.html
Didn't Meant To Mess Up With The X6 Discussion(Which It Definitly Has A Capactive Touch Screen)Awesome!!
But Why Isn't NOKIA Selling N900 In Around Asia?
Who Is Gonna Going To Buy The Relatively Sluggish Mini N97(Which "IS" Going To Sell In Taiwan Around Q4...) While There Is A Phone With 1G Of RAM(And A Bigger Screen)!!
I Thought They Care About This Part Of Market...
How do you know the N97-mini is sluggish.
In the keynote, Anssi, said implied that have improved the N97's software.
I think it won't be sluggish.
Also he said, it will be free with different carrier contracts in many markets.
Well It Could Have Been Better Than The N97(In Software)... But Putting It Side By Side With The N900, I Believe Most People Would Have Chose The Latter One...
I dont believe it will only be sold as a "comes with music" device...
That will limit them to 8-9 countries. They havent secured rights for in most countries..
But i do love the looks of it!
I guess that's the point. The main problem for "Comes With Music" has been the lack of interest by the carries. Maybe because the devices haven't been hot enough. Now that Nokia has this awesome phone on the market, perhaps the carriers follow with a wider "Comes With Music" availability. The service itself sounds pretty good. It just needs to be adapted so that the consumers can get it.
The X6 looks really nice.
That it will only come with "comes with music" sucks. I understand that there is a market for unlimited but DRM ridden music, but what about people who like the phone, but dont like DRM? Also what happens when you already have comes with music, but want to upgrade to said device? Pay the fee for it again?
___________
Other than that:
Engadget, it is perfectly OK for you guys to like the iphone, and some sarcastic remarks towards its competitors are perfectly ok (in fact the often sarcastic texts are among the reasons why i am reading engadget), but please stay fair!
Nokia/ Nokia devices have a lot of spots that need to be pointed out, but completely dissing them just because they are nokia, without having handled them or even knowing the complete specs is immature and boring.
Not too bad, but why would I get this over e.g. a Galaxy which is 60 Euro less? Ok, I suppose they will be comparably priced once the X6 is out. Still, the only thing speaking for the X6 is the 32 GB and the comes with music... However if they had Android or at least Maemo on this device...
Does the Galaxy come with Comes With Music equivalent service, where you get unlimited free music?
I guess, the comparison ends there and the answer to the above question is the explanation of the competitive price
of X6.
OMG! Has NOKIA made a phone that actually looks good?! Hope they keep it up. Wont switch to Nokia though, I love my iPhone :D
Didn't Know Since When That NOKIA Had Finally Take Notice Of Our Comments And It (The X6) Had Been Proved That It Is Indeed A "Resistive" Touch Screen... Wonder How That Works Under A "Scratch Resistive Glass"...
Correction to the article: Nokia has confirmed us that the X6 has a capacitive touch screen. http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/19155.cfm
Great, thanks!
Awesome.
How to get info on engadget about european products:
A.) Look at the pretty pictures from headline.
B.) Get the text based information from reader comments.
This is my next phone...... As a long term symbian user, my familiar OS with a capacitive screen and 5MP camera is a dream come true...Maybe the iPhone is good but it just is'n my cup of tea.I bought into the hype and spent a bomb on the iPhone(No subsidy in my country) and its been a major pain ever since then.
the 6303 is a series 40 that has the ovi store
I know, but this is Engadget - you know, the ones (Chis aside) who don't do any research on Euortech?
Come on Engadget, whilst I won't say you are Nokia haters, this post is clearly is slanted in that way. The X6 is actually a great phone WITH A CAPACITIVE TOUCHSCREEN (I was surprised buy your poor journalism
here - Though you have posted that you got it wrong).
WOW now i feel there is competition for my iPhone screen :) Super sexy phone. Just wondering why the phone is so thick. its looking like a box.
"Yea the X6 does look nice, but when will Nokia learn about lower prices. Making a phone with similar specs as the 5800 shouldn't throw the price up $200. You can't make ground in this time of day with a phone that offers so little yet costs so much."
Well it would be if this was true. Don't be bloody ridiculous. It's got a 5Mp Camera (vs 3.2), 32 Gb internal memory (compared to none), it 'Comes with Music' (probably worth well over $100 on it's own), has a capacitive screen (vs resistive) and despite engadgets facile remark about the 'same OS' it actually has many new features so could be described more accurately as 'Symbian^2' (compared to 'Symbian^1'). Making things up just makes you sound foolish...
