Samsung Omnia 2 pre-order page now live, tempting you with debt
Here's the good news: the unlocked version of Samsung's I8000 Omnia 2 is now available for pre-order on Amazon, sporting quad-band GSM and HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100. Soaked that in? Great, let's move on to the bad news: it's currently listed for $999.99. Ouch. At least it'll be subsidized when bought through a carrier (hear us, Verizon?). If this is on your must-have list regardless of costs, go ahead and reserve your copy -- no release date listed, so be prepared to endure.

I think I speak for everyone when I say: HOLY CRAP.
Your logic is so impeccable. /sarcasm
You're right about one thing though, you do deserve to be down ranked.
@Quantumphysics
I always LOL when people martyr themselves. They know they've expressed an unpopular opinion - one that is often narcissistic and self-involved - and so they resign themselves to being downranked, claiming that it "proves" their martyrdom. "Everybody hates me 'cause they know I'm right. (sigh, hand to forehead)" Keep acting like a Princess, we really don't care that you're only interested in the iPhone. That just makes you boring.
There's nothing wrong with the iPhone that some humility couldn't correct...
maybe there's an app for humility?
Lol, why would you pay 1k for a phone, more so when its something boring from Samsung.
It's our fault really. We ask for OLED screens, amazing processor speeds, lots of system ram, above average cameras and a nice custom UI for whatever OS it is that is on the phone. Then we say, "there is one more thing I want.... it to be cheap" LOL. As ridiculous as this phone's price might be I can at least understand its justification on a basic level. The contract price will be better anyway.
Blah let me type this again, (replying coming from an email is broken)
You can get so much more for $1000, ex laptop, even though they aren't the same thing, a phone is too small to be worth that type of money imo.
Awesome logic you got working for you there, "even though they aren't the same thing, a phone is too small to be worth that type of money imo." To see if it worked, I told my wife the 9k ring on her finger was too small to be worth that type of money. It...did...not...work.
Haha good one, I think it's more, it couldn't be anywhere near that price to make. But people will pay because they are nar nars.
@Ji
The logic they used in this case probably was if I could put a powerful computer in your hands i'll charge more because its more powerful then other phones and its more difficult to do with also not being power hungry. More speed equals the possibility of more programs and better graphics.
I would guess knock off another 200 would be better when it comes to the states, but my problem is why is a 200Mhz upgrade worth $500 in the cellphone world, 5MP,8GB,WIFI,GPS is standard these days with smartphones, but i guess that would revert back to my original statement. Question can anyone comment on the difficulty of getting this higher clocked cortex8(?) with correlation to the price.
$1000 For a phone that costs 200 to make and runs windows?
Shouldnt you be paying us to use it? :(
that phone is GSM, Verizon is CDMA, so that phone won't work, unless I'm reading it wrong
http://www.timtechs.com/samsung_i8000_omnia_ii_unlocked_prd971.html um. yeah. wow lol.
haha nice. silly amazon
Thanks!
Thanks for the link, and maybe I'm dumb for not getting why, but...
Why, under the "expert opinions" tab on that link, does it say under disadvantages, "3G not functional in North America"?
Wouldn't want anyone to hit his shopper's high, buy the phone, and possibly miss that little tidbit.
No thank you.
At least it'll be subsidized when bought through a carrier (hear us, Verizon?).
yea and just wait for Verizon to cripple this phone
I have been looking forward to the Verizon release since I discovered cooked ROM's making smartphones more convinient/finger friendly. I just personally like my Omnia 1 with the mods i've done to it.
No its accualy cheaper, look at http://www.popularelect.com/product_info.php?products_id=1379&gclid=CNj66f2R0pwCFQS7sgod7jAELg
It's only 590$ unlocked GSM. Basically the Touch Pro II price. Also Verizon has better deals on most Samsungs of HTC so hopefully this badboy will drop into the 200-250ish bracket when everything's said and done
$999?! Who is gonna buy it?
People with $999, who want it, duh.
Why don't you pansies stop your bitchin'?! That price is par for the course for an unlocked phone. Those who can afford it will buy it and those broke asses like yourselves will keep complaining.
Where are you from? Par for the unlocked phone course has never really been $1,000. At least not for something not branded Vertu.
@ all things considered
Motorola R1 Aura: $1119.94
http://www.smggsm.com/motorola-r1-aura-unlocked-quad-band-luxury-phone-silver.html?productid=556
There's always a marker for luxury goods.
I've always thought that phone looked shittier than most cheap assed handsets on the market (The over-priced over engineered Motorola I mean)
Can someone tell me what the hell happened to the US version of the i8910? (Omnia HD) I cant bring myself to want to buy this Omnia 2 so long as I know that the i8910 is out there somewhere--I wouldn't pay $1,000 for it either.
You and me both, brother. I've wanted that i8910 for so damn long. 8 mp camera? hello yes. Plus a slider keyboard. That makes it perfect.
$999? Guess I'll only get one.
Does the 1900mhz 3G band mean partial ATT compatibility?
General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/2100 MHz, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
This is what I'm seeing for the specs, (gsm arena) so I'm thinking no :(.
Sorry, I thought you meant AT&T 3G. It'll work on EDGE.
In fairness, the one listed (as well as the ones linked to earlier at lower prices) have a 3G spec of 900/1900/2100 which gives it some ATT 3G compatability. Though I don't know where ATT uses 850 (the other US 3G frequency aside from Tmobile's 1700), so 1900 could be good enough.
I would never pay to use a phone that has a resistive touch screen. Ever.
Honestly, I prefer good resistive touch (like what my Touch Pro has) to some of the capacitive touchscreens I've used.
Yes, I know about the HTC stylus patent, and of the various iPhone stylii. The fact remains that no capacitive touch device comes with one as of today.
Multitouch is nice, but many captouch devices don't have it enabled.
Here are the keywords: "International version" and "No US warranty." The first meaning no support for US 3G. As for the second, who is willing to shell out $1000 for something without any kind of warranty? Nokia N97 is only $600, and that's the official US unlocked version with warranty.
This is a joke right? You would have to pay me $999.00 to use a winmo phone. I don't care how great the specs are the OS is horrible, and you can bet it has a stylus for clicking the tiny X when its supposed to be a touch screen phone
Its only $550 and this is the best WinMo device ever. Huge screen, nice UI, and the best all, a STRONG processor!
I have omnia - I, touch viz is a crap..
MUCH cheaper on eBay.....what is Amazon thinking?
This is daylight robbery. An unlocked Omnia 2 sells in Singapore for about 725 SGD == 500 USD!
http://www.itechmobile.com.sg/mobile_phones.cfm?brand=samsung
Is it just me or does Omnia II look EXACTLY like the Jet (also by Samsung)?
Not exactly like the Jet, but very very similar.
They are some of the, if not the best looking phones right now.
Once I heard about this phone coming to Verizon I got obsessed with it. Reading reviews and hearing so much great things about this phone. At one point I jizzed in my pants( Haha that was gay, sorry I had to say it). They said this phone will have a ARM cortex 8 CPU with an 800MHz processor and yea I know speed doesn't always matter but I think this is the same processor in the iPhone 3GS so I thought wow faster clock speed this thing must zip around pretty quickly especially if its clock in faster than the 3GS. The phone also comes with a 5 mega pixel camera with D1 video recording . This got me really excited cause I take videos of everything and was hoping for a very good video camera. It comes with Windows mobile witch made me pretty unhappy but the reviewers say its covered up my Samsung's ui and touchwiz 2.0. One reviewer said it was one of the fastest wm phones they ever tested so that cheered me up.
Ok now there's video reviews out showing this phone in motion and thats were my interest when away. I first like to say that I absolutely hated the iPhone before and still I kind of do just due to the ui getting a little boring. I'm sorry to compare this phone to iPhone but I honestly think in my opinion the iPhone is the best phone available and ill give my reasons why when I explain the comparison.
So here we go. The main complaint I have with this phone is the lag. How can a company come out with a phone that lags. I mean both when opening applications, especially scrolling and just in general with everything. Come on you have a very fast processor in there with plenty of ram how can it be lagy. Some may blame wm but then again Microsoft why make a software that makes things lag and samsung why put a software in your phone if it lags. The iPhone does not lag at all from switching home pages to running and opening apps. It takes a second for the Omnia 2 to switch home pages. How does the iPhone work so well without lag. No phone has gotten close to the iPhone in scrolling, its just dam smooth. Ok you my argue cause the Omnia has apps running on the home pages. Well even when there was none it still lagged.
Then comes the camera. Hey 5 mega pixes face detection amongst othere camera features he thats awesome. Yea I know megapixels dont matter but he Samsung made the Omnia Hd and that camera is dam good so im pretty sure Samsung wouldnt put a crap lens in the Omnia. Well ok the pictures taken with the Omnia 2 are prettey good im not complaining about that. The video..god wtf went wrong I thought 480p 30FPS ok yes it has that but what terrible video and sound quality. I went through a few forums and I found out its a compression issue cause I saw a sample video with better compression( Idk how the guy did it) and it both sounded and looking amazing. Why Samsung would you put terrible compression on the video. All right your gonna hate my but its the truth. The iPhone 3GS has pretty much the best video camera for a mobile phone( excluding Omnia HD of course). The picture is absolutely beautiful and the sound is the best ive ever heard on a cellphone. Ive seen sample videos on the N95 97 some Sony ericsson phones and with out a doubt the iPhone is the best. I still wish the bumped up the resolution to 720x480 I know they can. I alson know yea yea you dont have much control over the settings. Btw the video camera does suck though.
Im still gonna get this phone haha ive got Verizon so im stuck but I was expecting better. Conclusion People love the iPhone for its simplicity. I love the form factor on the iPhone very seamless and a good amount of buttons. I know people love this to. It really looks expensive( not that it isnt). People love the ui for its simplicity if you want to sms just tap once if you want to go on the internet tap once. Id rather have a more uniqure ui that spells eye candy and is a little more complicated but hey thats me. Everything is integrated with the iPhone witch also helps with its simplicity. So really people love the iPhone cause its expensive, simple and its just a joy. It still needs allot of improvement. The iPhone didn't revolutionise anything and didnt have it first, Its already been done before. If the Omnia 2 didn't have lag, had a better browser and threaded messaging. It would rape the iPhone.
Please be nice to me im terrible with english and really im not an Apple fan be-otch. Macs suck sorry.
If I spend that much, the unboxing had better beat this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQlzX7EyIwU
The hardware is undoubtedly great, but come on, it's still Windows Mobile. You know what makes the iPhone great? Apps! People, not corporations, producing what appeals to you. WM ain't got that. And since the iPhone won't be at Verizon anytime soon, bring on the Android!!!
"You know what makes the iPhone great? Apps! People, not corporations, producing what appeals to you. WM ain't got that."
Uhh... Yes, WM has got that, tons of it.
try this. Go to Handago.com, and enter a WinMo device to see what is available. Or click the Windows Mobile Apps link at the bottom of the screen for generic WinMo OS titles.
I tried the Samsung Omni i900. 4682 Applications available. And browsing through them, I don't see any look-alike, lame apps. Nothing that looks like somebody cooked it up in 5 minutes. Some pretty comprehensive software titles there. That is what a real app store looks like. For non-specific WinMo PDAs, they have 18991 software titles. Fart-apps need not apply.
And yes, I can download them directly to my device.
Handago has been doing this since 1999. For every handset under the sun (except Apple). RIM, PalmOS, WinMo, Android, Symbian. 190000 Apps, 9 OS, more than 100 million downloads. They ARE the original App Store. Marketing apps to 87% of the handheld smartphones on the planet (ie, not Apple). Read the following:
http://corp.handango.com/PressRelease.jsp?siteId=1&CKey=1_PRESSRELEASE_PR011609
At one point, Handago had cornered the market. No, users didn't "browse around the internet at random, looking for apps". They went to Handago. Handago tightened the screws on developers, gave them less profit. Developers started to protest, but the bottom line was that if they wanted to sell their software, they had to list it on Handago.
Apple did not invent the App store. Apple doesn't have the most Apps (at least if you count real software titles). Apple doesn't have the most downloads (again, discounting stupid apps that really have no real function).
oh yeah, I almost forgot:
Android: 388 apps
Palm Pre: 490 apps
You don't need to tell me. I must have spent a fortune at Handango. I've been using that site for 7 years now with various Symbian/WinMo phones. I'm now on an Omnia i900. Its the seemingly limitless number of apps available that make the Omnia so great. The app scene is not locked down or limited in any way, so anything becomes possible. EG: "Nav'n'Go igo8" - a SUPERB sat nav app that puts TomTom to shame.
So should we assume that you actually enjoy AT&T? If true... I think you may be one of the first people to say that.
