Video: Sony confirms it's 'bringing home 3D' starting in 2010
As it turns out, yesterday's report was spot-on. Sony today announced that it is bringing the experience of looking absolutely ridiculous in 3D glasses home to the living room. The initiative is "starting in 2010" and will expand through BRAVIA LCD HDTVs, VAIO machines, PlayStation 3, and Blu-ray discs... and not in the press release, but we clearly see a CyberShot digital camera in the promotional video (look out, Fujifilm). It's hard to say from the wording if all the listed product lines will go 3D next year, but from what we gather there'll at least be BRAVIA sets in time for that Christmas. Curious see the zaniest video this side of the second dimension? Well, we don't have that, but you can giggle your way through Sony's promo after the break.

I'm riding on a dolphin, doing flips and shit.
It's just a gimmick, a very terrible terrible gimmick.
the dolphin's splashin, gettin everybody all wet.
But this ain't Sea World, this is real as it gets
hehehe, cute.
I'm on a boat motherf***er, don't you ever forget!!
I'm on a boat and... Its going fast and...
...I got a nautical themed Pashmina afghan
I'm the king of the world, on a boat like Leo
believe me when i say, i f***ed a mermaid.
If you're on the shore than you sure ain't meo...
Yeah I'm late, but atleast I wasn't out of order ;)
GET THE FU*K UP, THIS BOAT IS REAL!!!!
Finally! The last reason to go to the cinema is now negated!
I've been saying that for a long time and every time home theatre catches up, cinemas come out with something new. I personally think this will never catch on. HDTV still is hardly the majority around the world and people freaked out abotu analog cut-offs and they expect people to now go for 3D-enabled televisions? I think it will be cool for a while but nothing else.
Virtual strippers here we come.
that was in minority report right?
and porn!!! imagine porn in 3D zomg!!!!!
Engadget's sister site Switched even had an article from a company offering 3D porn
http://www.switched.com/2009/01/21/porn-star-belladonna-picks-top-sex-tech-3d-adult-films/
*grabs the oil and towel* Yep, I'm ready.
I know right?! I mean look at the pictures, the dolphins are really coming out of the...wait, what's that on the lower right corner...let me squint at it..." Product images are concept only"? What the hell!! You mean, there isn't any holographic images coming out at you?
On another note, love the enthusiasm at 00:10, "its uhmazing!!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeOm-V6GJ7w
Yeah... are you sure you want porn in 3d?? Get ready to squirm when you see the man-fluids fly at you in glorious 3D.
Pretty cool, but will it cost more..yeah. And when you see 3d in a small tv lets say 26 inch is not that awesome. I rather watch 3d in the movies not my living room.
Btw that commercial seems soo cheesy.
First!! ithink..dont ruin my moment
Good lord... will I have to sit that close to the TV to watch 3D?
Meanwhile, that video was a big old Engrish mess.
It's Echo!!!!
Bow, chicka, bow-wow!
Sony, I hope you give an option to disable 3D.
WTF is with my avatar changing randomly all the time...
It's a bug. Every time you upload a new avatar, it just randomly selects one or none at all.
Engadget should really fix that.
The whole comment system is a bug. Engadget should really fix it.
You think you will be able to afford a Sony 3d tv? expect "True3D" premium tax.
Rumor has it that Sony will actually go 4D in 2011 and you can time travel, but you still have to wear the glasses.
What about pants?
What about them?
Everyone knows there are no pants in the future.
What if we invent the finglonger?
Great, now you can wear dorky glasses and get migraines at home, just like the theatrical 3-D movies.
YES, you can. Isn't it great to have options?
Yes, you'll have to wear dorky glasses, but field/frame-sequential 3D is sooo much better than what they have in theaters.
Theaters use non-powered polarizing lenses.
And you might not get too many migraines if the refresh rate is high enough on these.
We'll see what Sony does with them.
I hope the execs sit through the extended Lord of the Rings in 3D to test the TVs out before pumping them to the public.
I'm just curious as to how they are going to power the glasses.
They better be wireless or we'll have TVs (or people) crashing to the floor.
They already said it's going to be polarized glasses. It's much more practical anyway.
Read the article, it says clearly that "frame sequential display and active-shutter glass systems" are being used, i.e. 120Hz TVs and LCD shutter glasses, NOT polarised light.
Means more expensive glasses, but the 3D pictures are higher quality.
The rep from real d told me that every other line of resolution is a different picture. or in other words, the light coming from the tv is polarized differently, alternating every line of resolution. While the combination of the pictures is 1080p, that is being split half for each eye. it works very very well actually. No headache for me. I cant wait for broadcast 3d sports! Things have come a long way since the paper, colored anagliph glasses.
Then screw watching porn with this, i don't want someone shooting a load in my face.
Is this Sony's answer to plasma black levels? Sunglasses?
That family does look super awesome though and they look like they're having a great time. Super early adopters are already wearing their sunglasses while they watch TV.
Sony's answer to plasma was plasma, but they didn't sell well, so they dropped them years ago.
Ray Charles here I come
I doubt he would have been very impressed with 3d.
I miss playing my 3D games on the Sega Master System.
I should go dig those games out of the basement.
Space Harrier 3D was cool.
I LOVE technology as much as anyone else on this site (hence my visit here), but I only have one question: umm...why?
How can they watch the Dolphin when THEY ARE ALL BLIND!
Good catch. The girl in red is reaching for the dolphin, but clearly doesn't know where it is. The other girl thinks the dolphin is on the first girl's shoulder. And the guy thinks he's watching the Miami Dolphins - no, wait, he appears happy.
@NHAnimator
That last joke was sooooo 2007..
I have a feeling some will photochop in genitals.
3d games? 3D GAMES!!!!!!!
3D Games you say?
They are already here (Invincible Tiger): http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/977/977952p1.html
This game can be played in standard 2D, in any of the new methods supported by all the new TV's coming and in the old fashioned anaglyph (red and blue glasses )methods.
You can get it now on Xbox Live Arcade and I think it may be on PSN now too.
Why are they bringing back this lame fad. 3D comes and goes and to implement it in tv's now is just stupid. 3DFX had 3d glasses like 12 years ago, look how long that lasted. Who is going to carry around glasses with them everywhere they go or what household is going to have 30 pairs of glasses. Probably at 25+ bucks a pop as well. Its such a lame idea. 3D shouldn't be brought to television until we have total 3d holographic images that float in space. This idea needs to be shot!
I totally agree with this. Look at that picture. Seriously.
So rather than be good parents and try and keep children away from TV (because families aren't spending enough time on real face-to-face communication), they're all going to sit around wearing STUPID 3D glasses?!
I can see the appeal of 3D, but it needs to be built into the tech, not the tech attached to us.
Why do they hate us so much? They need to stop "pushing the envelope" with 3d bullshit. I have a feeling they won't, though. and soon enough, "3d enabled" will be the new "1080p capable" sticker on the front of TV's, DVD players, and Receivers.
I can't wait for this. They should be adding it to stuff this year not next. Why does Sony always wait so damned long?
Please stop touching my dolphin.
The only good thing about this lame move from Sony, is that retailers will be pushing these new sets at high price points and cutting the prices for normal TVs.
Bargains for all of us!
That's exactly what I was going to post.
I don't give a flying dolphin about 3D, but it if makes great 2D TVs fall to commodity prices, I win.
I have a samsung 50pna450 3-D ready plasma and cannot wait for
the 3-D!!!
3 Dimensions of annoyance because I already wear glasses. Glasses on glasses is one of the worst feelings ever.
Its NOT a gimmick this time. I went to the NAB trade show and saw the realD demos. They had a JVC (I think) 3D tv and it was absolutely incredible! the most impressive thing was the sports games they showed. Id rather watch 3d sports on tv than go to the game. Its like you have the best seat in the house. Its much more immersive. For the first time I think 3d will be able to enhance a movie and not get in the way. To you guys with glasses, Im sue they will make perscription 3d glasses. or better yet get contacts and wear the normal 3d glasses. The HDTVs at NAB that didnt require glasses weren't great. You only had a few viewing angles to choose from. Move to the silde just a little, and the pictue is a non 3d fuzz. The glasses route is the way to go.
Sony is the company to do this and make it work. They have film studios, tv manufacturing, video game systems computers and basically own blu-ray. I think this will be the next big thing. After seeing it for myself in vegas a few months ago a skeptic was sold.
"Sony is the company to do this and make it work.
Right. Tell that to their ATRAC and Memory Stick divisions.
No, requiring separate glasses, or as you say, contacts (!!!) to sit and watch Sony 3D TV has FAIL written on it in capital letters on a billboard placed in Times Square.
Haha the family in the picture is trippin.
I bet as soon as I receive my shiny new HDTV, it will be absolutely obsolete... oh well :D As others have said, hopefully if 3D is widely introduced there could be a bit of a price drop, which would be great for everyone.
I'm not too bothered about 3D, being so used to 2DTV I feel it would look quite gimicky, and this sony video does nothoing to help that.. Super 3D dolphin family fun time!! No, i'm fine with my 2DTV, thanks...
Feel free to check out my site, if you like: http://myfreegadget.co.uk/
I really don't see the point of this. It is quite clear that 3D is simply being pushed by Hollywood as a means to reduce piracy but it's actual impact on the viewing experience is next to nothing. I've sat through a few 3D movies recently and it just doesn't add anything - just occasionally things get poked out of the screen at you.
Frankly, the only immersive experience that has been produced is IMAX. Even IMAX with 3D doesn't add anything more than the basic IMAX.
Still, I have to agree with other comments that it should make current technology cheaper and that's great - as long as I'm not going to be forced to either watch or subsidise this push for 3D then I'm happy with it.
That video felt like one of those on youtube that try to show how stupid Americans are.
They already have 3D DVD/Blu-ray movies out there, but apparently they are all based on the red/blue glasses and the quality sucks. I would love to get a few pairs of permanent (not disposable) well-built polarized 3D glasses (better than the ones you get in the IMAX 3-D theaters) and 3D Blu-ray movies. Obviously, 3D games on the PS3 would be hot as well, incorporating their new motion technology they recently announced.
This is great news. I can't wait to play some PS3 games in true 3D! Thats going to be sick. Also, I'd really like to see some real 3D-BluRays (not that anaglyph garbage). 3D really is the next big thing. I saw the sneak preview for Avatar in IMAX 3D and I was blown away by the experience. It was like I was actually there on some alien planet. This is going to be sick.
could the ppl on the couches be any more fake?
