Nokia N900 now up for $649 preorder in the US of A
Nokia fans know the drill -- if you happen to live in the vicinity of the New York or Chicago flagship stores, you're almost certainly better off holding out and camping in front of the store as the launch date draws near -- but now that they're being taken, the rest of the States might strongly consider filing an preorder with Nokia USA's official online store if they want an N900 as soon as humanly possible. That's a good deal less than the US equivalent of $860 currently being asked by the company's German and Italian outposts, so we guess we should be thankful -- provided, of course, that the US launch isn't delayed into oblivion by some combination of T-Mobile drama, firmware issues, distribution problems, or swarms of locusts destroying trucks as they attempt to make deliveries. A pessimistic way to look at it, yes, but remember: a pessimist is never disappointed.

YEEEEESSSSS!
It's like one press release after the next.
$649 is GREEEEAT!
That means that we, T-Mobile (USA), can probably expect a 2 year subsidized N900 for around $300 to $325.
OHHHH BOY! Christmas in October. Come to pappa!
wohooo, im on board 2, been holding out for a hole year for my next smART CELL, HAVE THE IPHONE SO HAPPY NOW I DIDNT UPGRADE TO 3G S..IM NOKIA NATION NOW SORRY APPLE ATLEAST IM STILL GOT MAC AIR WITH U
@tru2vu
You're fired.
Pre-order for 600USD: http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wireless/store/productdetail.asp?productid=25125
More like 199-250$ oncontract.
I Want this thing BAAAAAAAAADDDDD
Now where is my 850MHz frequency when I need it....
The specs on the pre-order do not list the 1700 MHz band for 3G. Anyone know if T-Mobile has deployed 2100 MHz in the US (Specifically Houston)?
i prefer my phone to not have the tmobile logo slapped on it.
It's $582.99 at the Amazon http://tr.im/Ay8z
Nokla Version is only $89
Don't start the whole resistive touchscreen thing again! That was already explained in the other thread...
which thread? can I have a link? thanks
We need an engadget forum.
Any thread; just any freaking thread of any freaking Nokia story, always some dude cluelessly whining about resistive touchscreen.
No Engadget forum. I spend way too much time on this website as is.
Okay, I changed my mind. I want an Engadget forum.
An Engadget forum...?
Oh the horror.
I want one too. But with a lot of mods.
NOKIA IS THE BEST:)))) The best quality ever!I live in Europe and we like Nokias for they are quite strong and high quality devices! It has been checked for many years!I have had various nokia devices for many years and never had any issues with them!!!:))) So if you never tried one say nothing mate;) Aye;)
please stop being a fanboy.
thanks.
asoccer345, please stop being a dip shit.
thanks
p.s. you're more of a fanboi then he is. Nokia does ridiculously well in Europe for a good reason.
On a different note, this just proves that Engadget's Euro to Dollar conversion method doesn't really work. Look at the price now!
Question about cell phones/sim cards:
I'm on a family plan on AT&T's network. We don't have any data plan and I don't want to add one, so 3G is not a concern right now. WiFi will be fine for data. So, does that mean I can buy an unlocked N900 and use my AT&T sim and AT&T's GSM network, just for voice? The T-Mobile-specific frequency articles have mentioned only is relevant for 3G/data, right? Will (A-)GPS work?
yeah, voice and edge will work fine with AT&T, so will GPS
Yup, I do the same with my unlocked Nokia E71.
i really recommend getting a Data plan, i have an unlimitted data plan for my C905 on att's network and i only pay 15 bucks for it.
i have no idea why the iphone needs a 30 dollar one
Anyone know (based on past experience) how long it takes for the expected carrier to start making announcements?
If I were T-Mobile USA, I'd be PUMPING This UP as the new IPHONE KILLER!
Just look at what happened with ATT when IPHONE was announced.
Now IPHONE has it's great qualities...
But now imagine the N900 (similar n terms of user experience) with 1000s of APPS being developed and offered for FREE in Maemo Garage
There will not be an iPhone killer. Sadly, the sheeple have had a taste of it, and will continue to worship the sweat off of Steve Jobs nutsack.
The iPhone is a decent device for what it is. A gleaming, properly advertised, easy to use pacifier for general public consumption.
Meh..
Why does the N900 get more attention and the B7610 less attention? There's so many posts on the N900 the last week or so and I can barely find any information on the B7610 especially on a solid release date and who is picking it up.
The Samsung Omnia B7610 looks kinda sweet too. And Windows Mobile also good.
What price is that running? Carrier Subs?
Well the price tag that I've found at some pre-ordering sites was running in the $600 neighborhood (no release date info though). The Omnia i8000 is running cheaper than that but of course that's without the QWERTY pad.
Because the B7610 isn't running EPIC LINUX!!!1!, maybe?
Or, more seriously and precisely, the N900 is a Big Thing because it's not only top-notch hardware, but more importantly is the launch of a new OS into the phone market.
And although I've currently no interest in your Omnia-thing, I'd certainly like to see coverage of _any_ worthwhile phone; while I'm a bit of a Nokia/Maemo fanboy (and quite a lot of an open-source fanboy), it's always good to know the competition.

Honest to God I am so THRILLED!
I have sat back for over 2 years thinking how I could disassemble my Nokia N800 and find a way to add phone capabilities. Pipe Dreaming....
That's how great the use experience is with the Internet tablet series.
Me too, I have the N800 and an N95. Together with the GPS unit, I don't think my pockets can take it anymore!
and don't forget the powerful A8 cortex inside.
"A pessimistic way to look at it, yes, but remember: a pessimist is never disappointed."
Engadget, for all of the stuff I don't like about this blog*, keep it up with the sarcasm, it brightens my day ^^
*I'm talking to you, Daily roundup!
"a pessimist is never disappointed."
I smell a hint of optimism in that sentence.
we can crack it .
and make it , dual boot with google android ..
viva android !!!!!
I was reading a developer blog and they said it so far was easy to setup a dual boot on the device so assuming you could get a copy of android OS you could make it work. Even WinMo if you wanted.
Dual boot.... that's just AWESOME!!
I'm hoping this phone has some kind of exclusivity period with Tmobile, then they put out a proper version to be used on the ATT 3g network.
It would be a major mistake for nokia to disregard the ATT crowd considering most nokia smartphone users have ATT.
Haha..LOL
No offense. But you mean the kind of exclusivity that still exists between IPhone and ATT?
My best bet is that Nokia is not ignoring ATT users, but ATT ignored Nokia. They probably turned nokia down because they already have the iphone and they couldn't lock it down.
While i agree that's probably what's happening, the n900 is a phone for people into gadgets, and while there may be some tech junkies on tmobiles network, there is far more with at&t.
Probably because the Tmobile network sucks.
Just browse through howardforums in the s60 section, most posts are made by people in the US are using AT&T.
The n900 is very enticing, but i doubt it's going to make many users jump ship to a less than par phone service.
"Probably because the Tmobile network sucks."
Hardly.
Their 3G network is not spread out as wide as AT&T's, but at least we can connect, go relatively quickly (hell, EDGE on T-Mo is quick), and not drop a call.
AT&T has the shittiest network of the big four. I'd rather be on Sprint and put up with their awful customer service than be on AT&T again
Is this another flagship? Why no marketing like for the N97...
Preach on, brother.
IPHONE vs N900
Other questions answered.
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=316975#post316975
Unforutnate for ATT users up front...
T-Mobile .. YES.
So its the same price as the N97?
you know you want two
You get a free Nokia BH-703 BT headset when you add the N900 to your cart. http://yfrog.com/7hrkip
gonna wait for next week's sub 300 dollar glitch
Can I use this phone with AT&T?? voice and 3g?
Yes for voice, No for 3G.
Definitely picking one up when it's available at the Nokia store or online retailers (price drop).
man no 3g support for att! i wanted one badly but since it doesnt (yet hopefully) support att 3g frequency i guess ill be sticking with my iphone 3gs for a while. god dangit nokia.......make one for att's 3g network already. i even held out on buying the samsung i8910 for this n900 for nothing, crap. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! so frustating..
The first post said,
"That means that we, T-Mobile (USA), can probably expect a 2 year subsidized N900 for around $300 to $325."
While I hope you're right, I think you're wrong. Just look at what T-Mo did with the HTC Touch Pro2. A commitment-free price of $550, or a 2-year contract for $350. That's like, roughly, 35% off. If they follow that same scheme we'll be lucky to get an N900 with a 2-year contract for $425...
Personally, I'd rather pay the $650 and be free and clear.
You're an idiot.
Somewhat off-topic, but some may be interested to know that the Touch Pro 2 for Sprint is available for order over the phone.
man i had an N810 and that thing was total garbage.. i dumped that thing on eBay two months after i bought it. Although im finding the iphone getting boring, Nokias are horrible quality devices. and after that experience with the n810 im imagining this new device will be more of the same.. more cons than pros.
I've found the Nokia Tablets tend to reflect the owners more then themselves. If you're patient, can follow 3rd grade level directions, and have an IQ above 50, they work out well. If you fail to meet any of the above requirements, your experience ends in disaster. Won't mention which requirement(s) you failed though...
P.S. Look at the last one.
Not so fast, the phone looks great but a month after release then we should see if its as good as it looks.
But to those of you who will get it first thanks for trying it out for me. I always go for large screen and high
resolution because i want too see as much information on one glance but mobile devices have limitations.
I am getting it!
I was wondering if anyone good answer this.
WHY would they release the n97 after a couple weeks the N900 was in the news???
Different classes of devices. N97 has also been out for a few months now, not a couple of weeks.
The N900 has basically been in hot anticipation for the past 2 years by the Maemo community. It is also probably the first commercial cell phone that actually runs an almost standard Linux setup.
It's closer to the objectives of the OpenMoko project than the OpenMoko project. The only difference being that the hardware design isn't open (not that they mattered,) and the N900's hardware and software is better.
Awesome I'm so glad I switched to T-Mobile. The TMO 3g network is fast - if you're in a city with coverage. It's not over-subscribed with iPhoners. I'm pre-ordering the N900 as soon as it shows up on the TMO web site.
I'm considering jumping later this year when my AT&T contract expires. I'll move my number to TMO and, in all the cities I care about, 3G service is available.
Is Nokia N900 Really going to be available through T-Mobile?Is there any confirmation on this information?
As of this post, no.
Well.. I have a question...
I'm thinking about the Samsung Omnia II i8000
But boy, this one is so damn good as well... so.. my question obviously is:
Omnia II or N900 ????
I can't decide... =/
N900.
Standard Linux >>>>>>>> Esoteric Linux that is Android.
Well.. this might sound silly, but... that's better than WinMo .. and even WinMo 6.5 that's coming in October?
Sorry again, but I just can't make up my mind!!
Oh, the i8000 uses WinMo. Thought it was one of the Android versions. Any ways:
Standard Linux >>>>>>> WinMo.
Essentially Maemo on the N900 is very similar to a standard Linux Distro like Ubuntu. It's a different architecture, so some of the packages can't be recompiled for the N900, but 99% of all linux software can easily be recompiled for the Maemo platform. Which essentially means you can get direct access to things like OpenOffice, GIMP, etc.
Yes the N900 can handle that kind of software. Google the Beagle Board and look at videos of what it can do. The hardware on there is the same as the N900 as well as the Pre and very similar to what's on the iPhone ( it uses a different SoC, similar specs ).
Actually I've heard openoffice has already been run on the N900. It was sluggish and certainly not touch optimized but that's pretty exciting that it didn't take any work to get it over. It really is an exciting platform and hopefully one that takes off here in the states.
Hello Di_ako_Cute,
Actually, it appears that an ATT compatible phone might be available. MobileCityonline is offering two versions of the phone: one has 1700 Mghz while the other offers 850. So it seems that both At&t and T-Mobile might be accommodated. See
http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wireless/store/productdetail.asp?productid=25125&view=3
Anyone heard if this will run flash files? I've heard the browser supports flash player 9.3, but no word on native flash player support.
the native support is flash player 9.4
WAIT!!! This IS unlocked, right???
You're looking at buying it from Nokia, so it's unlocked.
If you buy it from T-Mobile, then it would (probably) be locked to T-Mobile, ostensibly to make sure you use their service to pay back the discount they'll be selling it for (probably to $200 or $250).
I've had a couple of enjoyable years using the N810 and although I love the damn thing, I would appreciate an upgrade. I think I'm going to hold off on the N900 until the dust settles and maybe wait until the price comes down a bit. I did pay over $400 when the N810 came out, so rather than go for a blackberry tour or the always predictable iphone and lock myself into a contract, I'll see how T-mobile handle the pricing of the N900 before i jump in. Looks extremely nice though, but I'm not ready to orphan my N810 just yet.
Its good that nokia is back in the race for new mobiles.
Mark:
I believe correct internet grammar would make that sentence "Your and idiot"
Awesome, I see we're getting a shitty deal on price in the UK as usual, even with Nokia being a European company.
£499 in the UK with sales tax, around £430 in the US with sales tax.
The US doesn't pay as much sales tax as we do in VAT.
Wait wait this has to be wrong... the N900 is supposed to run on the 1700 MHz (tmobile) band, but this page has a version stating 1900 MHz HSDPA (ATT)...
http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wireless/store/productdetail.asp?productid=25125&view=3
Anyone have any actual info about that? Might just be a typo? lol
I suspect its a typo, I would only go to Nokia for info on their products.
Anyone notice that the site doesn't mention Skype anywhere? And its supposed to have Skype... But if it doesn't, then I'm sure the Skype from the N800/N810 will work.
now if only sony ericsson would start bringing their heavy hitters stateside (satio/aino/rachel), we'd be in good shape.
This device looks really neat! I'm really looking forward to try it out before buying it, i hope the screen is really responsive with fingers, i hate those screens where you have to insist.
When, in the history of Nokia, has any of their phones been bad quality? Questionable design perhaps, and sure, the 9300/9500 had weird hinges, but as a whole, you can usually count on spectacular build quality out of Nokia devices, especially those built in Finland.
I have been searching and searching for something that screams "I really want this".
That same feeling I got in the 2nd grade when I waited all day for my mom to get home so I could go rent Final Fantasy 2 (IV). Like many here, I have the nice TV, they beyond TV box hooked up to it, surround sound, home media server, game console and nice phone (Iphone & Nokia 5800XM).
I haven't really found anything... netbooks kinda cool but I can't stand the low res screens, and I'll admit it, I want something with a touch screen, and a device that I will actually use on a daily basis, not just buy it cause it's cool, then let it sit on the charger for weeks on end because it's missing one of the features I need.
I just installed Ultimate Edition Linux (2.2) on my main PC and in the spirit of that, I think I need one of these. Linux is pretty awesome (especially if you don't game much), and it's amazing at just how robust and feature rich it can be if you are willing to spend a little time using google to learn. Linux is what you put into it, and for now, I'm really enjoying it.
This looks like the perfect solution to: I need a touch screen mobile device with a decent KB, that can get on the net both at home and away, can browse my local network stuff, can eventually use VLC (omg pls), no codec BS, no .3gp crap.... Linux in my hand, in a decent formfactor, with a screen thats finally big enough to do something somewhat useful with.
This is the first time I've felt this in a while but, Nokia, give this to me with ATT 3g and I'll pay whatever you want.
http://maemo.nokia.com/
Scroll down to the white 'Maemo Select' section, Skype's listed in the preview.
Probably a newer version of what's on the N800 / N810 currently.
Supposed to be a reply to Richard above, whatever.
I think this idiot tried a Nokla phone and thought it was a Nokia phone and thought that they are shitty phones..
THE ONLY NOKIA PHONE WITH TMOBILE 3 G FEQUENCY?
I waiting for n900
It's actually $582.99 at the Amazon:
