Aww, just look at him, Philips'
Aurea TV's all growed up and showing off the latest in LED edge-lighting. This third generation set features the same transparent Active Frame now sporting 250 LEDs with a promise of "exact" Ambilight color matching" with what you see on the screen. The result, according to Philips and our own experience with Ambilight over the years, is a more immersive viewing experience -- or maybe the experience is just peculiar, we can never be too sure. The set still features the same, albeit tweaked, motion sensitive remote control and adds Net TV for quick access to content from YouTube, eBay, TomTom and more depending upon your location. As to the display, well, it's still 42-inches by the looks of things, with a Full HD (1920x1080) resolution, 100Hz refresh, and snappy 2-ms response as before. The box itself feature an integrated DVB-T/DVB-C/CI+ HDTV receiver, 5x HDMI 1.3a EasyLink inputs, WiFi, Ethernet, and a DLNA-compliant network link for accessing media off your PC. Coming soon, that's when.
TomTom access? Isn't this thing a bit large to be used as a GPS?
It just runs once and saves a screenshot.
Hmm..time to buy some new wheels, buddy!
Great if you want to watch coloured hexagonals, can't imagine it being that great for actual TV...
Actually, ambilight IS great for watching TV/Movies.
cheap ghetto ambilight:

I'd have one if it could control my Philips LivingColours lamps at the same time.
Those LivingColor lights are awesome, why won't philips let me buy them(US)?!
you work for philips.
100Hz refresh? that would make for some awkward syncing with any standard 60Hz video source...Nice for computing though.
Seeing as how the 100hz model isn't sold in 60hz markets i don't think that will be an issue.
It's meant for PAL, not NTSC
heh, I love Ambilight.
Basically it's like watching TV with the lights off, usually the room is a bit too dark. With Ambilight they try to reduce that darkness without tearing out your eyes with a super-bright TV.
It makes a big difference if for example you watch Planet Earth, the Antarctic scenes fill the room with a cold blue light, and spring/summer scenes give off a warm orange.
So, this TV simulates light leaking from the edges of the LCD panel?
No, it projects the colors from the screen outward reducing eye strain and making the image just feel... bigger. I have the two channel Ambilight tv that best buy was selling last year and I love it!
Feels weird watching a tv that doesn't have it.
Yeah, this is the effect that specialists try to remove with projector setups by using dark materials to prevent reflection from the screen.
I don't know many people who go to the cinema and complain about eye strain or the fact that the cinema didn't have lights to emulate bleeding.
If you want a bigger tv, get a bigger tv, not one with fuzzy pixels at the edges.
Fruut Frew ! Pretty.
More like "all GLOWED up", amirite?
I bet this looks insane on psychedelics..
DVI to HDMI input, que Milkdrop 2.0..... that would blow my mind.
WTF?
People with astigmatism now have a TV designed specifically to prevent them from seeing the screen. Sweet.
Maybe this belongs in a hallway of a corporation with a slideshow of their projects or something, but as a viewing screen in a home?
If you had astigmatism, you wouldn't buy this, just as you wouldn't buy a bicycle if you had no legs...No one is forcing this TV on you...
I dont get how having astigmatism would prevent you from being able to view this tv, please explain.
Ditto, wth does astigmatism have to do with this?
The thing that Engadget doesn't know, is that this model could/should/will be equipped with 3D interface.
So they are actually wrong on the 100hz, for 3D they should Philips should have at least 120hz.
The last pic shows the 3D experience, just browse the gallery.
And TOMTOM on TV :) lolz
What's next, grandmas and shotguns ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNjUpR7qwNE
Is this to replace all of our lava lamps?
TomTom? "You are in your living room. Nearby, you have beer, cornchips, cheese and a lady. There is heavy traffic in the kitchen." Etc.
Man, the lighting effects on those pictures are absolutely diabolical.
Do they ever sell these in the US? I have never seen one in a store...
They used to sell the models with the lights behind the screen in both a two-channel and four-channel configuration. I bought a two-channel model from Best Buy last year. Prior to that, some of the Bose stores used to use the four channel version on their demo setups. Phillips technically stopped selling here in the US though and let Funai take over this region for them with the Phillips name.
Haven't seen Ambilight here since, but I'm sure there has to be a website somewhere with some of the TVs still in stock. I don't believe this Aurea model has ever been released here.
And you most likely wont. Reason is, you seem to be one in a million (no, make it one in several millions), who is even remotely interested in this stodgy little beast, selling for prices that make wall street walkers worth their toil, while offering consumer value that'd turn prison cooks green with envy. Believe me, you are not missing much.
I kinda like it...
but those people in that one shot are obviously tripping balls while they are watching that
Try working on your computer in the dark for some time. It'll really hurt your eyes after a while. This in theory fixes that problem, by lighting the wall around the screen.
It's useless if you always watch tv in a well lit room, but if you like watching movies in the dark like you would in a theatre it does make a lot of difference.
I use my 47'' phillips with the backlighting as my computer monitor :)
You think ?? Then why don't theaters have a big light around the screen?
When will they be, what is the model nr? :D
When will they be out*
If they'd sell the ambilights with a bag of weed her e in NL (remembre, that's legal here), maybe it'd sell better.
Awful, awful stuff, the moodlight thing combined with tv.
You see them everywhere around here (lots of Philips history/+'fans' in this region, because the company originated in Eindhoven, about 35KM from here) at peoples walls and in shops.
Tacky is the right word here imo.
The (Philips) wake up light and living colour lamp have their use though.
Scuse the awfull spelling and a missing 'even' in the first sentence.
No, Pim, there is NO excuse!
(Personally I don't think the effect is tacky but to each their own.)
I want that TV stateside, and in my living room. Nao.
I made my own version with a wireless control for about 30 bucks, and it's on a Samsung. Take that phillips.
Wow, that looks awesome :)
beware. looks are deceptive.
just like the Phillips Cinema 21:9 backlights, cool !
If there is light around my TV, I have a hard time seeing the picture. Just like if there are oncoming cars at night, I cannot see the road...ditto with overhead lights depending on their placement.
