SiPix to debut color e-paper next year?
SiPix (a division of our old friend AU Optronics) has announced that it will bring "a small number" of color e-ink displays to market by the end of 2010. Apparently, a breakthrough in thin-film-transistor panels has put the company on the fast-track to making this technology commercially viable. If so, it could beat rivals like PrimeView (the manufacturer of both the Kindle and Sony's Reader) to the punch by a year or two. "Making colored electronic paper displays is our top priority," said SiPix president Andrew Tseng. "We are in talks with customers to supply colored displays ... as [color] would encourage advertisers to place ads on [electronic] publications, which then would be able to provide more content [to readers] for free." While PrimeView is currently scrambling to buy up US-based E Ink, AU Optronics is scheduled to ship its first e-paper display modules to customers this quarter. No technology has ever came from Australia. WHat makes anyone think this is for real?
The Refrigerator was invented in Australia.

@jack1701 : LOL at "The Self-Propelled Rotary Hoe". I love Aussie inventions.
The rotary clothes line. The electronic ignition for lawn mowers. Key wifi technologies. The worlds first true secure micro kernel. The saritch (sp) orbital engine. functioning Scramjet. Numerous medical treatments. LED traffic lights. Recoilless .22 Gatling
Are a few inventions and technologies from Australia that I can think of off the top of my head.
Though in saying that, is this actually an Australian company?
WTF why is it in the last 2 months engadget reads like some magazine full of just ads for stuff instead of news.
because being first means having less time to analyze what you are talking about or even to get all the specifications. There is also an increasing number of new gadgets, turning to an avalanche at exhibition time.
to be honest, while color would be a nice addition, it is not needed, sure the ability to have color photos and color covers would be nice I would rather have a higher refresh rate. Books, and text are black and white for the most part, and I havent found a textbook that couldnt get away with B&W pictures.
I highly disagree. In most modern text books color is almost essential.
im with shmuck.
agree with the book part
perhaps the color version would be for PC and mobile, etc.
im with garbuhj
Being able to carry all your textbooks in one color e-reader sounds pretty good to me.
I think color is important. There are many textbook diagrams that would be useless in b&w, which is why I think many of my geography books are still not available for the Kindle. There are just way too many diagrams and they would not convey the same message with just a b&w display
It really depends on what one is reading. While there are lots of books that are perfect without color, there are many wherein color is essential. Even a book about Java programming needs to be in color, as there are screenshots and most IDEs have color coding as well.
I, for one, am not buying an ebook reader until it's in color. I want to be able to read my computer books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs like engadget on an ebook reader.
What refresh rate? eInk or ePaper is a "Static Display" format. Until you change the page and then it becomes static again.
If this allows me to read comics in colour then I will be all over this!
Dude please bring the ink eink ebook reader. Please for the love of god! Portable comics, that I can read on the train on the way to anywhere? Hello? Anyone out there. Please hear my prayers and answer them. I will pay.
I wouldn't give up black&white text clarity for touch, refresh rate or colour. I might as well use a netbook for reading if I did.
What kind of color Sipix will deliver by the end of next year?
I strong suspect that they can deliver true full color EPD based on their technology, they are mostly like talking about black/white plus the third color and claim it is the first color EPD. Funny, is it?
Mark my words here and go back to check one year later.
