Xperia Pureness -- the phone formerly known as Kiki -- reared its head today, mostly in the form of press shots of stylish people who demand stylish handsets. Don't have any tech details yet, but we do know that it's a fine example of Sony Ericsson's new "brand direction," which -- as we heard yesterday -- can be summed up succinctly (and a bit nauseously) as "make.believe." Right. What we do know, however, is that it will be officially launched in November 2009 "through selected retail distribution channels in key cities around the world," that the company wants us to approach this as "a work of art rather than technology," and that the company hoped to "sculpt an object of design that reflected the purity of water and a sense of calmness when not in use." Just what we needed! We're sure Frank Lloyd Wright would approve -- you know, if only he hadn't died fifty years ago. See for yourself in the video after the break.
I don't understand what is wrong with I quite like it but to me minimality has always been key. Anyway I expect Sony Erricson to be around longer than that, after all just about every kid I know owns a Sony Erricson mainly because they are cheap, many are less than £100 which is about an average kids birthday money. So while they might not sell many of their overpriced flagship models like the Xperia they will sell bucket loads of the W350i and the W890i.
a famous norwegian fashion editor/writer died recently, she was named Kiki Sørum. I wonder if she ever had any luck with her name in her inevitable visits to the fashion capital of europe -> france.. ;)
The phone does look nice and it's designed definitely not for you guys!Leave that bull opinion for yourselves!;) The phone should look nice in one's hand
Ummmm..no thanks. I'll keep my iphone. I was in Starbucks the other day, surfing on my FREE AT&T wifi drinking a venti mocha. This barista comes over, and asks if my phone was the new 3Gs. I said "yes." While we were talking, I proceeded to pull out my 17" macbook PRO. (Yes, you heard it, PRO). She said "wow that is a huge laptop." I said "sit in MY laptop and I'll show you something huge." She proceeded to give me a free lapdance right then and there. All this before 5:30am. I'm guessing if I was surfing on this phone and pulled out a Dell or generic Windoze laptop I wouldn't have been so lucky. By the way, did I mention it was a macbook PRO?
Why do failing mobile phone companies - like Sony Ericsson and Motorola - focus their restructuring efforts on weird, overpriced, niche crap while companies like LG run away with their market share with simple, cheap, mass market devices?
Not a phone for me. However, looks like a transparent oled/amoled screen. That is cool. Although it seems monochromatic. I agree the video is very boring. In my opinion SE designers are OK. It's the company organization, and leadership that seems poor, in my opinion, which means the programmers and desingers waste time and resources being improductive instead of making really cool products.
Pretty nice with the transparent screen part - should have been thinner though and without hardware buttons to emphasize the minimalistic design of the UI. I mean, it's an completely impractical fashion phone anyway, so why not maximize the fashion aspect?
Also, why is this part of the Xperia lineup? I'd be VERY surprised if this was a smartphone...
Sounds like I'm alone here, but I love this phone! I think it's awesome. It's not just a phone, it is a piece of art! I do hope they keep the front this clean/simple and just but the name/logo on the back side of the phone (and keep it small). I can see this phone come in black, white, grey/silver & maybe even a red. I'm sure that this would not be a smartphone, but that's okay. As long as it works well, looks good and most importantly: built well! They need to use high-end materials so that the screen will stay scratch free (sapphire crystal) and an anodized aluminum body would be a nice touch too. If this is implemented correctly, they can pretty much ask anywhere from $500 - $1000, since this phone will be for a select group of individuals anyway. People who don't care about, or need, a smartphone. Or people who would use this as a second phone. Also, people who really appreciate art. Not to mention collectors and individuals with deep pockets.
This might, just might, be the most useless idea in mobile markets to-date. I mean why the hell? Why use time doing this when it actually makes using the product even harder..? For just SE's sake I hope this will never ever be actually put on sale. Well, that 5 years might be the ultimate stint they will get if I ever spot this in a store.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Sony Ericsson's designers are, without a doubt, meth heads.
They just don't 'get it'. I'll give SE a maximum of five more years of existence.
Five years? So much?

Is it just me or is that screen translucent?
Has anyone seen the phone in Echelon Conspiracy? Close.
most boring video in existence, thank you.
On the contrary! I nervously waited for some kind of a macabre picture to appear and a screaming sound suddenly blast through my computer's speakers.
WHY? Because there wasn't a 50 foot giant woman? Because they didn't make snide jokes?
Because they actually showed the PRODUCT?
Frankly, this phone looks cool, texts, calls and does what i want. + My last sony lasted 5 years, not < 1 like my iphone.
So you know what, +1 Sony.
Kiki means dick in French. ...
lol ....It means pussy in Tagalog
I guess that makes for a lot of disappointed men from the Philippines when visiting France.

This is why you give designers weed and not crack.
Ahh, but crack makes the workers more efficient.
So, I suppose it is a tradeoff.

MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!
I bet this will sell well in france then.
stupid comment system... this was meant for "Cristophe"
"Is that your Kiki in your pants or are you just gald to see me? .. oh, wait"
No its a Sony Erection
"kiki" means female genitalia in filipino.
LOL at SE's brand name research team...

Of course it was a mb pro, for professional dbags like you.
Wow, this video is so interesting!
Someone agrees with me at last. I thought I was the only one. People aren't giving this product a chance.

i'm definitely not coghing up the ten gazillion bucks this "phone" is bound to cost.
Apparently it's 699€ in Germany...for a monochrome screen, no cam and so on.

Who says Xperia = smartphone?
I'll go to Starsbucks with my iPhone also.

I really don't want to see anyone's ear mushed and pressed up on that screen while they talk.
Dammit, i want one, screw my iphone, this is the kind of stuff that ericsson used to come up with, good on em, i'm getting one.
Is this a phone or a clock or a stick with phone functions from one of nokia's old analog phones?
