Walkman outsells iPod in Japan for first time in four years... but iPhone sales don't count
As with most accomplishments these days, we can't help but place a rather large asterisk next to Sony's award for managing to outsell the iPod lineup with its Walkman. According to Tokyo-based research firm BCN Inc., for the week ending August 30th, the Walkman series had a 43 percent share of the personal music player market versus 42.1 percent for iPods, marking the first time in four years that Sony's managed to get the upper hand. Got that? Good, now for a major caveat. For whatever reason, iPhones aren't considered part of the iPod line, meaning people who want the luxuries of the iPod touch and a wireless data plan aren't included in the survey. That's quite an omission -- the iPhone 3GS is currently the best-selling phone in Japan, after all -- and we gotta imagine it'd be more than enough to tilt the data in Apple's favor, even if you threw in Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones for good measure. But hey, it's still a feat in its own right, and Sony might as well celebrate while it lasts -- something tells us the gang in Cupertino has something up their sleeve soon.

rightfully so it was omitted, the walkmen is just that it plays music, unlike the iphone, which is a phone that has a hard drive and interface that plays music
uhm so if we toss in iPhones, then lets toss in Sony Phones as well. Engadget you just seem bitter to lose
Don't shut my mouth first of all mr. no name so called projectdecember! I said what I said. That's my personal opinion!;)
Yes, it's not about ipods if you don't comprehend it's about monopoly that's freaking prospering here! That's what pisses me off
Don't take it for granted anyways
Just thought I would drop in a little information about the iphone in Japan. Just to shore up my credentials let me mention that I live in Japan. Anyways, one of the likely reasons that the iphone is selling so well in Japan (in my opinion) is that THEY ARE GIVING THEM AWAY FOR FREE! Contracts here are overly complicated in their terms and fees but basically, if you want an iphone then you can get one for no money down and just pay a 2000 yen fee every month to pay off the phone. BUT, if you sign up for an iphone you get what they call the "super saver" discount and you get 2000 yen discounted from your monthly bill, and you also get 1000 yen knocked off the regular data plan price. So if I wanted to get a data plan for my existing phone, I would actually SAVE MONEY by getting an iphone.
When I read that "the iPhone 3GS is currently the best-selling phone in Japan," I had to laugh because every time I go anywhere near a Softbank store I am berated with the whole "iphones for everyone" campaign. Seriously, that's what they are calling it. OK, I'm done, I just thought I would let you guys in on a little insider information there.
Not fair. Sony makes their devices extra small so their people can hold them in their cute teeny hands.
Give it a few weeks until the new iPod is released.
Softbank Mobile the telecom provider for the iPhone in Japan is giving out iphones for free, shouldn't that be taken into consideration, maybe thats why apple "sold" the most phones. Let them hand out free walkmans, i bet sony will "sell" more mp3 players then too.
ipone and the ipod is great, our solar charger is also great! If combined with more stick! www.szekd.com MSN:peiqing-lai@139.com
