BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac leaks out in beta form
It's been a long time coming, but there's finally light at the end of the tunnel for Mac-toting BlackBerry fans -- BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac is scheduled for release this month, and a beta version has already leaked out. Unlike a certain scrappy competitor's hacky solution, BBDM lets you sync with iTunes, Address Book, and iCal without any monkey business, and you'll also be able to manage and install applications and other files right from your desktop. We haven't tried the beta (we're not pushing our Snow Leopard luck), but we hear it's stable -- do let us know how things turn out if you're brave enough to install it.

Nifty. I still don't mind booting into Winblows for to do this. Its actually never much of a hassle as I usually keep XP running in the background.
snow-Leprosy!
True, but this might be the one thing holding some people back. Better to not have to pay for the Windows license to begin with if you only need it for 1 or 2 things.
Windows blows so much that you're still willing to use it after you get a way to not use it. Aight.
call me crazy, but i thought this was out....
Won't work on Snow Leopard for me, the application opens, but Snow Leopard won't recognize my Berry properly.
same for me, just sticks on the "connect your blackberry via usb" screen. using a storm and snow leopard.
It's working fine here on Snow Leopard with a Tour. Crackberry comments had a few people with 8900's having problems.
"Mac-toting BlackBerry fans" → "BlackBerry-toting Mac fans"
BlackMacBerries?
oh I see. it "leaked". meaning, let's "leak" this out there so the public can do QA testing for us, for free! --whats that? not fully functional? well you cant complain because its a "leak"! btw... can you tell us exactly what happened? excellent.
The new Blackberry software works great on my MacBook running Snow Leopard and my Curve syncs just fine.
You mean there's Mac owners out there with Blackberries? I thought they all had iPhones.
Usually people can only afford one or the other.
I think there are three of us left....
the blackberry has a cheaper monthly plan, plus ATT can suck a fat one because their coverage blows
I have used it in Snow Leopard with my Bold and it worked perfectly. Did a back up, synced address book and music with no problems.
Palm. Take heed.
my thoughts exactly !
I'm currently doing a perfectly well working update on Leopard on my Curve :) all is better than pocketmac
Any idea whether this is intel-compatible only?
It's a Universal app (according to 'get info')
You mean no one has tried it because the staff at Engadget only have iPhones, right?
I have an 8900. Laura has a Bold. Jacob has a new Tour. AOL issues 8800s.
Try harder.
@Nilay
Sarcasm fail. Get off your high horse and lighten up.
I downloaded this software only to find out its useless to me, since you cannot do anything over bluetooth. Why does that matter?
Well, the BlackBerry happens to have a POS usb connector that breaks off.
I'm scraping this bad boy for a 2G iPhone.
Try harder still stands. Your "sarcasm" sucked.
Your USB connector snaps off? That's funny, of all the blackberries I've ever owned, seen, and knew about from friends, the connectors are the least of the worries. The sooner they can go to an optical mouse, the better.
What do you do, swing your device by the cable as fast as you can above your head to see how far you can fling it when it finally disconnects?
this still doesn't explain why engadget didn't try out the leak... afraid it will break one of your bajillion computers on hand? boo-hoo
See, Palm? Is that so god damn hard?
I installed it today on my PowerPC Macbook Pro running Leopard and it works perfectly. Synced my iCal, Address Book, and iTunes music with no problems at all.
Does it work via bluetooth?
will this software allow tethering?
Installed it without any problems on Snow Leopard. Hooked up a BlackBerry Pearl 8120, works perfectly except for the music sync... that's a little shaky still. BBDM keeps prompting me to "Turn on mass storage" when it is already ON.
I installed on Snow Leopard with BB Curve 8330, plugged in, updated the software, and then the program did nothing. I unplugged my phone after trying to see if anything was happening, and my phone started blinking red and was unresponsive. Finally after plugging back in, and an hour of pulling my hair, it is installing the new software, only, it has been waiting for the device to restart for about double the usual time. Hmm... I don't know if it was wise. I hope it turns on with all my data intact!
Update: I have officially messed up my BlackBerry! After my phone restarted, it was back to factory settings, and all data was gone except that on my card. I tried a restore, but it kept getting hung up, and I tried unplugging and replugging in the phone, but now it will not recognize my phone. This stinks! No ideas what to do. Been working on it for over an hour!
Did you end up getting your blackberry working again? I seem to be having the same problem.
Finally...native support for BB and Mac, the future looks bright
Missing Sync for Blackberry works perfectly and does it over bluetooth. Why bother using this software if there is already a better alternative?
waaaayyy better
it's wendys!
Please.... Someone who has it tell us if it supports Bluetooth!!!
Apple still stepping on European Commercial Law
(this was typed from a Macbook Pro)
@avoigt did you end up getting your blackberry working again? I seem to be having the same problem.
Nope! Had to start from scratch. I think what happened was that it got hung up in the backup/update process, and did not finish the backup. I checked the actually file size of the backup, and it was 5 MB. Reinstalled the new software, got Facebook back on, email accounts, re-downloaded theme. Was a process, but was probably good for the phone to do a clean reinstall. Hope you work things out... and everybody else BEWARE!!!
O, about the no connection problem, I did a full wipe of my phone. After this, it recognized it and loaded the newest OS.
I love this program, except it WONT sync my music ... had the same problem as kobefanatic ... AARON, did you install some sort of patch to get it to work with music? For some reason I have not been able to get the mass storage working ... its set up as ON and auto enabled, tried everything ... have a BOLD also but no snow leopard, just regular leopard
Wow, this is a pretty nice start. Very clean and worked extremely well for me. I used it to update my pearl to the latest OS without a hitch. This was long overdue and RIM did a fairly good job. Tried to connect via BT without any success... there's no indication this software will work with anything but the USB cable. That's a pretty major oversight, but like I said, this is a good start.
Installed on a MBP running leopard.
I installed it on my MacBook Pro and sync'd my Tour. All of the data sync'd properly but now my Blackberry receives messages several hours late
Works with my storm and Snow Leopard except for music, won't recognize my media card.. any suggestions?
Where do you get the beta?
this peice of shit software doesnt work peeps. at least not in snow leopard. anyone get this to sync?
