Just before the release of Windows Mobile 6.5 you get 6.1 (and I never expect Verizon to allow it to upgrade to 6.5 based on their track record).
528 Mhz processor with TouchFlo = LAG
True it is less crippled than similar offerings from Verizon's past, but with Sholes (Android) and other Windows Mobile 6.5 devises (presumably) in the wings, this thing should drop like a rock in price fast as it sits on the shelves collecting dust once everybody starts the same old complaints:
"TouchFlo is nice, but it is still Windows Mobile 6.1 and not finger friendly under the hood"
"TouchFlo seems to cause some lag when apps start"
This appears to be the same old game, but in a pretty shell... that's all. Just another Verizon offering of a phone about 2 years too late compared with what else is out there on the market. VZWOffers on Twitter has been saying Verizon Wireless has some "awesome phones coming up, but we can't discuss details" I certainly hope they have something better up their sleeves than this.
My friend who works for Verizon said that all the newest 6.1 devices coming out, including the HTC TP2 will be 6.5 upgradeable. A lot of previous 5.0 and 6.0 devices on VZW were able to be upgraded to 6.1. Like my old Samsung i760.
Jay, The Touch Pro2 actually came out back in Feburary of this year so to call it 2 years too late is crap. Yea verizon's track record sux with the last touch pro,( I own one.) but this one aint that bad. plus all of them coming out at the same time and this time its not crippled with its GPS or RAM. I'm hoping to do another warranty replacement this time will make it #4 and get them to offer me the pro2.
JayMonster, you're a genius. What OS upgrade hasn't Verizon allowed in the past, because I sure can't think of one. Based on the track record of your knowledge, I'm going to guess that you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.
titanxboss - The Touch Pro 2 may have been released (only) 7 months ago, but Windows Mobile 6.1 is more than 2 years out of date, and the 528 Mhz processor is the same one that causes lags and is knocked on android devices with "Sense" (essentially TouchFlo for Android).
It may not be a bad device overall, but when is somebody going to give us a Windows Mobile Device with the hardware to back it so that that it doesn't seem so slow? Is it too much to ask for one device that matches specs with other "premiere" devices?
ckeegan - Let's see... how about the Motorola Q9m. The update to 6.1. The Q9h got an update... Verizon Wireless... nope.
Talks of the XV6700 getting an update to Windows mobile 6 from Windows Mobile 5 (especially considering the long wait for the XV6800) went nowhere. There was one patch, that fixed "performance issues" but that was about it.
The XV6600 was supposedly going to get upgraded from Windows PocketPC 2003 Phone Edition... never happened.
The Thera had newer, better dialers from Sierra Wireless, none of which were ever officially sanctioned by Verizon Wireless.
So, based on these 4 phones, I can only assume, you would rather be a smart ass, rather than know what you are talking about before trying to claim somebody else has no clue. Sure, has Verizon put out some patches on some phones? Of course. Have they ever given an upgrade, even a small one like the 6.0 to 6.1 that at&t gave their subscribers? No, they haven't. Not that I have ever seen.
The Samsung i730 got the update from WinMo 4 to 5 and the Samsung i760 got the update from WinMo 6 to 6.1. So there are a couple of phones verizon has updated. But overall they suck at such things.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

I am waiting on the Omnia 2 myself...
