Sure, it's not exactly news to hear that the Xbox 360 is the most unreliable console of the big three, but just how unreliable is it? Now there's a point of contention. The good news for Microsoft, of sorts, is that a new study from SquareTrade found that
just 23.7% of Xbox 360 consoles failed within the first two years of ownership, which is actually a fair bit better than some of the previous numbers that
topped 50%. The study also found that 10% of PlayStation 3 users reported a system failure, compared to a mere 2.7% of Wii owners. The Wii actually fared the worst when it came to power and remote control issues, however, while the most common problems with the Xbox 360 and PS3 were disc read errors and output issues. For its part, while Microsoft hasn't responded to this particular study, it has
previously pointed to its "best warranty in the industry" to reassure its users and, of course, to its more recently-produced consoles, which are less likely to buckle under the pressure of a marathon
Call of Duty session.

My Xbox 360 failed about 2 months after the 2 year mark. Funny though because at the time of failure I had it over a friend's house so his kids could play it while they were staying with him. Got it fixed under warranty and then just ended up selling him the refurbished replacement they sent me. Since then it's been PS3 all the way for me. I can honestly say I don't miss my Xbox 360 one bit. The only thing I miss about it is GOW but that I can do without.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great system but I just can't justify paying to play online as well as all the Microsoft points crap. I love the fact that everything is in plain US dollars on my PSN purchases.
Listen to this....I first got the GameStop refurb PS2 in 2000. It took a shit. I went back and got another refurb under warranty for 15 bucks. I repeated this process 4 times, paying only $15 for each new PS. The last time I went in, the manager happened to be an old friend from high school. He gave me a NEW PS2 instead of another refurb. This was in 2002, and the thing is still FLAWLES! Never even had one "cannot read disc" or anything. I even cut a 4"x4" square hole in it for a cooling fan. 7 years on a ps2??? Awesome! I really want a PS3 slim because of the price drop, but feel so guilty about selling or giving away my PS2 that has been so faithful and dependable.
My first 360: Almost to the date one year from the date of purchase... Crapped out on the night Halo3 came out... F*%k!
My second 360: Traded up for the Elite via store warranty (long live CompUSA)... Crapped out exactly one year from purchase... F*%k!
My third 360: It has about three weeks until the one year date and is starting to freeze on load... F*%k! F*%k! F*%k!
My first PS3: It is about a year old know and gives me no problems... F*%k Yeah!
My Wii: Collecting Dust... Oh F*%king well!
I thought it would be higher as well.
However, I don't mind if their console craps out, as long as they make good on it.
i havent had any problems ever since i bought the elite when it first came out. wutever, the other two will never come close to xbox live.
my wii-mote or wutever drains the shit outta my batteries and i barely even use it!
Ooooh, how naughty!!!!!!
Can't Microsoft do anything right? They just don't know how to build good hardware because they're a software company. But then again, they suck at making software too, so hm...
Whatever iTard. their mice are the best in the industry as are their keyboards. Their sidewinder joysticks were the best. Their wireless routers were also damn good. I really wish they didn't discontinue them.
The simple fact is MS rushed the 360 onto market to get out there before the PS3. Was it a smart move? From MS's standpoint maybe. From the consumer's standpoint who has to put up with this shit. Hell no.
As for crap software. Windows 7 bitch. Apple is already got a beta of their first patch for crapleopard. That took what? 2 weeks?

Microsoft's mice and keyboards? You mean Logitec mice and keyboards that Microsoft slaps their logo on top. And as for Windows 7, it's the same strategy, rebranding Windows 6.1 as "Windows 7" and trying to pass it as a new OS while it does little to improve its core foundations.
The optical drive on my 360 that I got back in December just died after the most recent firmware update. I've been using my HDDVD drive as a way of playing movies. I need to send it in. But I'm more then a bit pissed that I'm going to have to pay for shipping to send in the damn thing even though its MS's hardware that failed.
25%?! Between myself and my two brothers (we each live apart), we have gone through all three of ours within 2 years. FORTUNATELY, only one wasn't covered under warranty....thanks Microsoft. Sign me up for the next one of these studies, we're 3/3 with RROD.
The best warranty in the industry?! Load of BS. My 360 two days after the last (major) update. My Halo 3 edition unit was beyond the "superior" warranty period of 1 year. Video problems are not covered. (Please pay another $99 for the next 20 months of use.)
The RROD is covered, but that is a flaw in the unit, which construe more of a recall if failure occurs. Warranty is really for the unforeseen, not the "well, we designed this like sh!t and, gee, let's go ahead and fix this problem, not the ones that really occur in the field."
F-U Microsoft. I'll pay the 99, like a fool - needs my ODST.
That really makes me feel better,
turns out that I'm the only one in 4 people who has a dead xbox.
yay
no matter what the rate of the reliabilty is of the 360, no matter how many people say it sucks, and no matter what negative thing you have to say about it. bottom line it out sold the PS3. i have a few friends that have the PS3 and never talk about using it to play online only to watch blu-ray discs. so i think for being a gaming console, i think the PS3 fails. it failed as a game console, if it wasnt for blu-ray it would have failed completely. the only thing ps3 owners can say to sell the ps3 is that the 360 has the RROD.
Yep, J. Allard allways said software was going to be their main focus.
Guess the next microsoft gamebox isn't going to push new tech.
My launch weekend 360 just got the RROD last night. Bummer.
It's not unusual to see that mostly the folks who had a problem would be likely to post. Many times, just as in customer service scenarios, the satisfied customers are far less vociferous.
I have 2 Pro units, one has the falcon chip, and the other one has the original crappier one. Neither one has failed yet in almost 2 years of moderate to heavy use. I also know that a well ventilated, horizontal console is less likely to fail or scratch disks. I guess it's not unlike a good laptop: If you don't know how to keep it from getting too hot, it will probably give you problems as well.
As for me, I'm waiting for the Elites to get the Jasper chip before I consider an upgrade. I have tried the Wii, and it was lots of fun for about 30 minutes. The PS3, even with the lower price, still does not appeal to me as a better alternative.
Just look at mine failing for the first time....

Fuck your spam.
my second 360 got the rrod.for me its 200%. Bill G. can suck my.......
Ok, I am not kidding. I have a xbox 360 for a little over 2 years now and it has the E74 (1 querter of the red ring) for a while already and all the time it happens, I put it in a "walmart" plastic bag and close it with tape. turn it on for about 40min, until it gets the 3/4 of the red ring and turn it off for about 30 min. After that it works perfectly for at least another week. Good luck with that!! Microsoft products is that easy, turn it off and on again, they will work!! :)
the "Best warranty in the industry", I've always thought, is one you never have to use.
"the most common problems with the Xbox 360 and PS3 were disc read errors and output issues"
The disc thing looks like stupid users to me.
If you take care of your disks and are aware that an optical drive is kind of sensitive then no problems.
If on the other hand you treat your discs as coasters, allow them to get scratched to hell and covered in crap then this will cause any player to have trouble.
I've seen so many people pick up a disc from a stack of their console, wipe it off their shirts and then put it in their drive.
Strangely their discs give read errors and the optical mechanisms get covered in dirt.
If I treated my car the same way the tyres would be flat, it would be buring old and the constantly breaking down.
Well, not surprised cos everything maybe apart form Win 7 that Microsoft makes is S*&^. I am just being honest.
I love my Halo but having wife, kids, job, etc I don't play it fanatically. That said I'm on my FOURTH f'ing X360!! Camped out to buy my first one on the first day. Lasted 363 days. I call up to find out about warranty only to find out I've got to express ship it back to MS before the warranty expires. Oh yeah, couple months later they decided to extend the warranty. Nice.
Did I mention I'd moved to the Philippines at the time? So it was international express shipping and MS (this part is understandable) would only send the repaired unit to a USA addy?
So yeah, these things are lemons. I'm only on my fourth one because my friends got together and bought one for me on my birthday. Otherwise I wouldn't be on an X360 b/c after 3 die I say enough is enough.
Well the good thing is if you complain enough they will fix it for you well after the 2 year warranty period.
Well, I'm 4/5 so far. Launch day xBox lasted about two years. First refurb unit they sent lasted almost a year. Second refurb, slightly over a year. Third refurb, sounded like it was going to go out so pre-emptively traded it in with a slight loss and got a brand new unit. This (fourth unit) lasted just under two years. Fifth refurb unit arrived about two weeks ago....
PS3 and Wii, no problems, but yeah, they are both played much less often. And the Wii does sound kind of like a hair dryer at the moment and it's had the least amount of use.
exactly aroudn the 2 year mark was when i got my first and only RROD. Recieved a replacement in less than a week. the M$ fanboy inside of me can't say anything bad about the 360, I still love it to this day. Even though I want a PS3 so bad too bad stupid tuition goes up every year
