Optima's Maemo-running OP5-E MID demoed on video, priced

We've already gotten a quick look of Optima's new OP5-E MID, but those really curious about the first non-Nokia Maemo device will no doubt want to check out this new video courtesy of techvideoblog.com, which offers nearly ten minutes of turning, tilting and attempts to decipher a Chinese-language interface. The Optima exec on hand also confirms a few details about the device, including the fact that it does indeed pack built-in 3G, and that it'll apparently sell for "around $500." Head on past the break to check it all out for yourself.

what a unique design! it's a first!
Oh shut the hell up.
@arkenklo
Hilarious.
@Arkenklo
"shut the hell up"
for when you know the person is right and you're pissed about it
I know it's annoying and overplayed but that bezel _does_ look extremely similar to a Creative Zii Egg, only in chrome.
Looks more like an iPhone, the OS UI has similar features of OSX Safari logo, dock etc!
@ Arkenklo
It's an attitude like that that breeds unoriginality in product design. Some shitty designer just mocks up some iPhone-esque model, everyone says "Hey it worked for Apple!", one guy dissents, tries to come up with something original, and they all say, "shut the hell up". Seriously, I fear the day that every device out there looks like an iPhone... Let us hope it never comes.
Why everything have to look like an iphone crap.
because iphone looks like everything else? if this is a phone, I would like it better!
Why every comment you make gotta look like troglodyte babble devoid of insight?
"It's a mix of Android and Maemo".
Bullshit. I would not be surprised if the only way this is a "mix" of Android and Maemo is that they are all based on linux.
Not even when they build a free, open operating system that has no limitations or boundries can they stop themselves from making it a ripoff off every single popular platform there is. God damn chinese and their KIRFs.
They take the shape and look of an iphone, transforms it to a n900/n810, cook up their own (presumably shitty) linux dist and make that a ripoff of Maemo, Android, Windows Vista/7 (mediaplayer...) and iphone os (icons). All in one device.
I feel sorry for that poor poor phone, that hardware deserves something better. Like the real Maemo.
Have you tried Red Flag Linux per chance?
Lol, this looks like a giant iphone. Come on you know you wanna say it.ty
I personally don't see the point of such small MIDs...IMO we should be concentrating on making more powerful (Tegra is a good step forward) cellphones that can do MID duties...that way we aren't stuck carrying around 2 bulky devices.
But, of course, that is just MY opinion...and who am I? I'm nobody....
...and not only I'm I nobody, apparently I can't even work a simply blog comment system...*sigh*
"Simply" install some VOIP apps on this type of device, and this basically replaces the mobile phone (as long as it can stay in 3G VOIP standby for at least a full day on the battery), side advantage you won't have to pay anymore for voice calls and sms.

Totally agree.
Unfortunately on Engadget, most of the idiot readers think we need to carry two gadgets for no apparent reason.
My god that video is annoying. You have to REALLY wanna see this thing to sit through it.
I like how this guy pretend that he doesn't speak Chinese and click on every options that he wants correctly.
I lived for 4 month in China once, though most of the clicking is by intuition although I haven't tried that kind of maemo before.
This thing looks ok, but it is very very far from the N900.
The UI is less sophisticated and everything loads slower, the N900 is in a class of its own.
With respect the guy really asks so damn questions... lol
That device is impressive, though the MID market it's not one that proved successful so far.
Is it just me or is that interviewer really annoying sounding?
