Video: Canon EOS 7D gatling gun shooting 8 FPS of awesome
We'll be back later with more impressions, but we figured you'd like to see Canon's new EOS 7D in a video quickie, live at IFA. It's short, just a minute, but enough time to show off the 7D's built-in digital level, 19-point autofocus, and a naked shutter blasting though 8 frames per second. Now man-up son, and hit that link.

I am definitely interested in the 7D--I have a 30D currently, but the 40D nor the 50D were big enough upgrades for me to justify them--the 7D looks perfect, as soon as I can find it for a good deal!
Does anyone have a link to a picture of the 7D with the internal pop-up flash showing? TIA
Oh i found one on dpreview
5dmk2 FF vs 7d Cropped frame.
8fps vs 3.9fps granted they are for different uses.
but the full frame viewfinder is beautiful. the one in my 20d feels cramped, although the new 7d viewfinder will be a tad bit larger and brighter, but obviously not FF larger.
manual focusing is a pain on cropped cameras i feel.
Also I hear the dynamic range is much larger on the full frame, as well as lower noise at higher isos.
after the failure that was 50d with 15mp, the dual digics might help the 7d with 18mp for lower noise. but i wonder how it will compare to the lower noise of the 5dmk2
anythoughts?
The dual digic's purpose is to increase frame rate, not lower noise (which is the sensor's job). The 5dmk2 has a different (full frame and obviously more expensive) sensor than the 7D and naturally returns sharper images with lower noise.
However, the digic's can do noise reduction after the image is taken (which is possible to do when shooting JPGs, like you can on the 50D). But keep in mind, the internal noise reduction makes the images suffer in regards to quality (it's better just to use noiseninja or something in post processing).
I'll wait for the new 5D Mark II to come out or will they call it 5D Mark III?
All of those specs mean nothing if the picture is bad. Unfortunately, it's *impossible* to cram in 18 MP into a cropped sensor and not have significant noise or loss of detail from noise reduction at any ISO above 400, and seeing the example photos proves it.
Also, the D300 has 51 AF points... the 19 AF points on this is still behind if you care about that sort of thing.
99% of the specs for this camera are pure marketing gimmicks. Megapixel war? Check. Gimmicky horizon level, that just slows down your shooting so you can check the horizon when a $25 plastic thingamajig that fits into your hot shoe or your own two eyes does the trick and much faster at that? Check. 1080p video (when a good deal of us want a PHOTO camera not a VIDEO camera)? Check. Super-fast AF performance (dude... learn to focus. Seriously, you'll do it faster than the camera unless you're shooting sports or something)? Check. Super-fast shooting (that fps can help when shooting stuff like a water droplet splashing but for most other stuff, just hit the shutter at the right time... learn2shoot)? Check.
There's a few *real* reasons to buy a better DSLR than an amateur model with enough control to hit aperture and shutter speed - better image quality (especially when the ISO's go up), and weather sealing. Canon fails on the first, and fails on the second by not using O-rings like comparable equipment.
Most medium format cams have a single AF point in the center and they do the job well enough.
Manual focusing with most dslr lenses is a waste... too much effort to turn the ring.. Med. For. lenses are as smooth as butter on the other hand.
You sorta had me on the first few paragraphs, then it went downhill.
Hmm.. yeah, it's a gimmick camera alright ..
7 frames per second. 8 with optional battery grip
51 point autofocus
720p video mode
with a body only retail price of 1799.95..
ooh.. whoops.. that's Nikon's d300s
Duhh, if Canon didn't put video mode in this everyone would be crying that "well, nikon has one"
Digital level, IMHO i can't find a good enough reason to put one in the camera, but it doesn't appear to be raising the price by much so i don't really care. Just gimme a call when they finally decide to add built in GPS and or WiFi ..
You hear noise? That's Henri Cartier-Bresson rolling in his grave!
Did I miss the comparison of the 7D to the 1Dmkii? The 1Dmkii is roughly the same price on Ebay and was the defacto "sports/action" camera. Would any 1D owner cross-shop here?
1DmII vs 7D:
8.2mp → 18mp
DiGiC 2 → dual DiGiC 4
1.3x crop → 1.6x crop (for telephoto work)
2.0" 230k LCD → 3.0" 920k LCD
ISO 100-1600 → ISO 100-6400
1.20kg (no battery) → 0.82kg (no battery)
No movie support → 720p/1080p support (might not be a necessity, but you never know when it might come in handy)
The only major downside is that the 1DmII has the 45-point AF while the 7D only has the 19-point AF. That alone could be a huge reason why sports photographers stick with the 1D line. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of photographers pick up a 7D as their secondary camera since it's lightweight and has a few tricks up its sleeves.

nice comparison...thanks for the details..I was hoping to use some of my Canon lenses in a crop sensor
Looks like an expensive ashtray.
looks like an upgrade from my 40D, i'm sold
LOL
Vote this comment up, it was really funny :-)
id easily pay 1k-2k more for all of these features and full frame. for video and film people the reason these cams are interesting is because of the amazing look the 35mm frame gives you.
"the pilot has an announcement to make: we are not encountering turbulence. The attitude indicator on the instrument panel is broken. does anybody have a Canon EOS 7D for him to borrow for the landing?"
shooting at 9 fps, 8 seems kinda slow.
Why would I pay this much for a 1.6x crop when a rebel or something similar is so much cheaper. Sure this has the 8fps and some nifty gadgets but how often would someone use that outside of sport photography. I rarely take continuous shots, all that matters to me is full frame, low noise and crystal clear photos. I do get the feeling this camera is gimicky for the semi-pro/hobbyist market. Someone who wants a rebel but wants some more bells and whistles. For those comparing this to the 5dmk2, the sensor won't even come close. Used prices of the mk2 are even around 2600-2900 right now. If you want a cropped sensor don't waste your money, get a 800 dollar solid performer. If you want to invest in a real full frame camera spend the money. I think this thing is priced at 1700 for the people with extra cash to spend beyond a rebel, on some nice extra gadgets.
another thing, if you're gonna blow 1700 on a camera you're obviosly going to want some nice lenses which certain ones will be ass on a 1.6 crop.
I think you're missing the point..
Comparing the 7D against the 5dmk2 is just ridiculous. A new 5dmk2 (body only) is $2700, 7D (body only) $1700.. You can buy some nice glass for the difference in price. Plus with the 5d you NEED to buy a flash, so you can up that price by at least $100
5dm2: 9 point AF, 35 zone ttl metering, 3.9 fps, 98% coverage viewfinder, no built in flash, digic 4 processor, full frame, 21 mp
t1i: 9 point AF, 35 zone ttl metering, 3.4 fps, 95% coverage viewfinder, built in flash, digic 4 processor, crop frame, 15 mp
7d: 19 point AF, 63 zone ttl metering, 8 fps, 100% coverage viewfinder, built in flash, dual digic 4 processor, crop frame, 18 mp
Kinda like apples to oranges. You know the soccer mom with 2 kids who bought a Ford Expedition when a Toyota Camry would do ? It's built for them. It's fast, does video, has more af and metering points. Do I think the 7d is the be-all-end-all camera, no. I'm sure it will be a decent camera, but my 40d will do until i can afford a full frame.
As far as certain lenses being "ass" I'm really not seeing your point. True at 28mm the crop is going to be 45mm which admittedly stinks. However, i don't seeing anyone complaining at the 200mm range when you're actually getting 320. If you're buying "nice lenses" most times you're not buying them for the focal range, your purchasing for aperture. f2.8 is f2.8 on full or crop.
For a quick chart on the Canon SLR specs, check out http://www.balancedart.com/canon_dslr_comparison.htm The 7D isn't on it, but you can see most of the other ones.

AWESOME......WHEN IS THE BIG GIVEAWAY ENGADGET....HOPEFULLY I"LL BE ON THE FIRST 5 COMMENTORS
Arron,
thanks for finding us, we were going over the stats after adding the 7D and found your mention ;-)
the 8FPS is blistering but we are loving that level indicator and the 19 zone AF is sick!
looking at the 7D Vs say the EOS-1D Mark III it's going to be almost twice the MP for much less than 1/2 the price and only slightly slower. The biggest quality difference we see right now is in crop factor & metering where the 1D III wins, but with 8 extra MP, the new 19 point AF and 63 zones will that really be an issue?
:-)

Cudos to balanced art.. nice comparison btw, saved me hours trying to research stuff before i posted..
I just got my &D from Best Buy. Charging it up now.
