Olympus E-P1 meets 50-200mm SWD lens monstrosity, hilarity ensues
We've already seen plenty of the Olympus E-P1, but when we dropped by Olympus' booth today at IFA we just couldn't resist slapping on the biggest lens they had, courtesy of the micro four thirds to standard four thirds adapter, and shooting a bit of dramatic show floor footage. The verdict? It's totally impractical, especially because there's no autofocus during video with certain lenses, meaning we're stuck working the manual focus ring, D90-style. Still, we didn't expect anything different, and our short film entitled "People Wandering Around, Totally Out of Focus" really made the effort worth while. Oh, and for our money? The white model is about twice as sexy as the gray. Videos are after the break.

A ginger!
...a scary ginger at the end of the first video.
technically, a day-walker. I'm allowed to go out in the sun -- Thomas
with a very strange haircut, i'd mention that too! ;)
Yeah; but I still want the Panasonic GH1
so now we know who takes the blurry man photos
Dear Mr. Blurrycam,
There is a thing in the world called a tripod. Have you heard about it?
The photos aren't blurry, they just have very, very shallow depth of field. In all the photos I viewed, something was in focus, but just not a lot. Different from Mr. Blurrycam. More like Mr. MisonstruedAsArtsyCam. they just need to give up, buy a flash with a means to bounce it and shoot at a decent aperture.
They are on a tradeshow at a stand with the camera attached to a security wire.
Thinking, paying attention, have /you/ heard about those?
... to be low ranked. Please, write full sentences.
My adaptor comes in the mail in a week. I can't wait to try some big lenses on this little cam :D.
It'd look better hooked up to this: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3349&navigator=3
Well the cool thing about this is that you can balance your giant lens in your left hand, and your right hand won't have to support the weight of the camera. This should make for steadier shots . . . but in the videos, it doesn't.
Do some hammer curls, Miller!
I use a Panasonic 45-200mm µ4/3 lens with my E-P1. It's not nearly as awkward as the above lens, there's no adaptor needed, and it autofocuses faster than the Olympus kit lenses!
The 50-200 is one of the best lenses olympus makes. It might be quite a lot bigger than your u4/3s one but it is also a better lens and with better autofocus on full size cameras.
I personally cant afford it but I got the 70-300 and it isn't bad. It is considerably smaller than the 50-200, although it is a lot slower.
Worst haircut EVER!
purposely, duh -- Thomas
i think the lens might be heavier then the camera itself
That is true even on full size 4/3s cameras. That is why it comes with that tripod adapter.
And what did the PICTURES look like with this lens setup? Did the autofocus work for pictures? Isn't this an important part of a review?
No, see you don't understand. Cameras aren't supposed to take photos anymore. They're supposed to shoot HD video.
[/sarcasm]
Not only will you have to focus manually, but you will have to use a crappy electronic focus ring, that makes focusing manually reeeeeaaaalllllllyyyy slow, if it is anything like my 40-150mm olympus lens.
i just love the ROLLING SHUTTER..JELLY effect..once again. Apparently no one knows how to address this issue..how nice..

we still love u thomas
I will see your twice as sexy and raise you 10x.
If they only made the white with a grey grip... oh it would be heaven.
I love your Ricker. But I'm ginger Myself so there is a little bit of bias there. Judging by your last article though you're no stranger to bias yourself.
Big surpirce, 200mm lens hand held video is useless.
Even hand held pictures with 200mm will need pretty fast shutter times, even with in body image stabilisation.
Well, I think we all know how NOT to change the Olympus E-P1 now.
Um, can I ask why you would not post "pictures" from the camera, since that is what the damn thing is for in the first place...
'Cause this is a gadget site, duh. We don't actually care if the cameras can take pictures. We just like looking at them.
So exactly why would one buy such an expensive lens for a camera like that..is there a point?
Such an expensive lens deserves a Canon EOS 40D 5D or Nikon D90 or D300 or something...not a cheapy E-P1
Don't have to. You already wrote it for me. The glory of being first is that you get to piss people off and make them pointlessly dribble over these little insignificant numbers.
+1. Long overdue.
There were also photos of E-P1 with ZD 14-35 mounted floating around, but your shots are the clear winner. For now ;)
I posted my video of the Olympus E-P1 filmed at IFA 2009 at http://techvideoblog.com/ifa/olympus-pen-e-p1-camera/
That is so crazy. I just can't believe it! It is unbelievable. Astounding, astonishing, marvelous, magnificent.
It's really not that great....
wow, holy smokes!
A camera blog this is not.
Mine's bigger....
Why has this been the only post up for like the last 2 hours. Is engadget down or something.
200mm in 4/3 is the same as 400mm in normal 35mm full frame world.. so shakiness is to be expected
You call that a montrosity? THATS a monstrosity ;)

cu
hah!
I guess engadget has never been to:
http://www.four-thirds.org/en/products/matching/index.html
where you can visually mash up any fourthird or micro fourthird lens/body. It's pretty fun. The EP-1 looks even more funny on lens' such as the Sigmonster, or even the Olympus 90-250 f2.8
Wow. It's like watching a world sculpted from Jell-O.
