Fujitsu Esprimo Q1500: Core 2 Duo and Blu-ray in a laughably small form factor
My my, we've seen heatsinks bigger than this latest Esprimo Mini PC from Fujitsu. The Q1500 might look like your run-of-the-mill underpowered nettop, but its makers have successfully crammed a mobile Core 2 Duo CPU and a slot-loading Blu-ray drive inside to make one hell of an appealing little goer. 4GB of memory and a 320GB hard drive fill out the generous spec, and yes, there's a HDMI out as well. Basically, you're looking at a Timeline laptop adapted to the desktop, which would also suggest that the unknown Intel CPUs are of the CULV variety. Of course, all that grunt won't come cheap and the base Core 2 Solo, DVD drive-packing option will start prices off at €699 ($998) when these hit Germany later this month.

Very nice very nice!:) Such a tiny little thing;)
That's what she said.
@ Daniel: The chicks kissing in your avatar are hot!
i think that's a guy on the left..
Why everyone is trying to humiliate the picture? It's a my girlfriend Ann from Ukraine!;)
Mr LordFarkward That's what she said to you in your bad dreams
Looks like *someone* was able to withstand the "bag of hurt" in a small form factor.
Just sayin'.
thinking the same thing. if apple were able to make the ipod touch and iphone i would assume they could make blu-ray work without too many problems... and dont even think of saying "you know what assuming makes you"?
ASS!!!
You started it...
Y'know, now that I think about it, Tim Cook was probably talking about software rather than hardware. Hardware-wise, all you need to do is drop a drive in, but when you're making the OS, then you have to navigate all the licensing stuff.
$998 Dollars. Yay!!.....Wait a minu-
I look forward to horror stories of these things melting through desk surfaces when an unwitting owner leaves it on all day.
No, it will never do that... since it has a fan so big that it sounds like a jet turbine.
That is the problem with such sff, you either are limited to low power atoms, or need such strong forced convection systems that they sound louder then a bathroom fan.
The CM V10 and the Scythe Godhand are the only coolers that are bigger than this thing.
too expensive, lmao, it should only worth about $150 then maybe someone might just buy it, but again its gonna be in Europe you never know.... they love paying a lot for stuffs like... high speed railway etc...
high speed rail saves enough in time that increased productivity overcomes cost
Only somebody with an extremely narrow world view would knock on europe's rail system. And, if that person is American, that field of vision might be so extreme as to render them incapable of seeing an entire toothpick at once.
I bet it comes with a huge brick AC power unit, probably bigger than the computer itself.
I'd rather go a little larger and get a Shuttle PC with better specs. So, the Shuttle is like twice the size of this, but at least I get to have two HDD, and a gfx way better than the intel 4500HD, ION, or even the ATI 4330(optional on the larger Timelines), this mostly likely comes with.
how come all these "HTPC" solutions never come with a TV tuner?
To tune what?
Analog cable, DVB-C, DVB-C2 HD, DVB-T, DVB-T HD, DVB-S, DVB-S HD, DVB-H? With or without CI slot? With what CAM module? You probably never do it right. Tuning stinks anyway. We want video-on-demand-over-ip!
Ummmm....I'd still rather have a mac mini sans the blu-ray. At least the OS doesn't suck ass in the mac mini.
fail. there is no way that OS X can even remotely come close to the capabilities of Windows Media Center.
You're right. It sucks whale dick, not ass, and subscribes to "bag of hurt" apologist logic to explain not having a Blu-Ray hardware option.
/Troll quid pro quo
They didn't mention what OS will come installed. I'd bet that even if it's Windows 7 the overheating issues will be enormous. Plus, with all the Trojans & Spyware running in the background I bet I could cook a steak on it. Honestly, I can't get excited about Blu-Ray until the retail prices of hardware & movies come down a bit. Heck, I just got a 1080p tv less than a year ago & unless I'm really looking I can't tell much different between my HDTV & my friends Blu-Ray. Finally, if I needed a small form factor pc I'd wait until Apple puts Blu-Ray in their Mini. At least I'd have something that has a proven track record, & the OS upgrades are a lot less money.
I sure hope you're just trolling.
cool story bro
Proven track record? I would say that Fujitsu's track record is probably more proven then Apples (which isn't dissing Apple at all). Fujitsu has been designing and selling some of the most compact laptops on the market for long before anybody ever dreamed up the concept of netbook (search for P1000 Lifebook if you want to see what I am talking about). If anybody can pull this off, it will be Fujitsu.
That being said, Fujitsu is also know as aiming their quality at the higher end market. $998 is actually a deal coming from them, as compared to what I would expect based upon their track record.
I don't like small desktops, because I'd be paying for portability when the monitor would make it un-portable again, right? I mean, they have those tiny USB monitors I guess...
Hell, I just beat myself at thinking. You have more processing power sans the screen, so you can do long processes like converting videos or performing backups with maximum speed and portability (it's a little box as opposed to a sheet of metal).
Yay, but a Mac Mini has similar specs for around $700, right? I guess no blu-ray drive.
Damn, I'm killing myself with thinking today.
dont think too hard, u might kill urself.
The base model at €699 doesn't have bluray, so it does compare with the Mini.
1. the 2gb ram 320gb mac mini is 799€ (>1100$) here
2. apple has 1 year warrenty and horrible pricy support upgrades
3. 799€ the with 24/36 month warrenty and tax here in europe are the suggested retail price wich will result in max 700-750€ street price
(and i guess about 700 in the us ? )
*fail
should be
3. 699€ the with 24/36 month warrenty and tax here in europe are the suggested retail price wich will result in max 600-650€ street price
(and i guess about 600 in the us ? )
The size is exactly as Mac mini. 165mm x 165mm x 50mm of this one vs 165.1mm x 165.1mm x 50.8mm of Mac mini.
Why is this one laughable? Doesn't Mac mini has C2D too?
Yes, and the mini has a real GPU -- all for less money -- LOL. I know, I know, no blue ray, but lets be honest, who really cares?
Yeah, who cares? Apple said it's not good and Apple didn't put it in there. Apple knows what's best for me, so I don't care!
Now wait, if it's a culv core processor and I'm guessing just built in Intel graphics, that's going to be right on the edge of what most bluray viewer programs can support. I have to think that if you want to watch a bluray on one of these things, a fan or two is going to turn on and start whining, and that would be less than ideal. It's an interesting form factor, but it seems like there would be too many compromises that would make it less than worthwhile. I'd be interested to see a full review, though.
pico-psu, zotac gf9300 lga775 mini-itx board, some ram, some hd, e5200 cpu,slimlime blu-ray drive,m350 enclosure=~$500...wheres the beef in the fujitsu?
The "beef" comes from a "real" processor, which is probably 50% faster in executing most applications then the ion. The real question is what graphics chip they shove into this, and how it compares to Nvidia Ion. Regardless, I bet this will still blow the doors off the Zotac.
He said E5200 CPU. Not all zotacs mini-itx's are IONs. The one being mentioned above is socket 775. So I'd like to carry on the afore mentioned question: Where's the beef fujitsu?
that actually appeals to me a little, I mean its not going to replace my main machine but it has possibilities as a HTPC
Mac mini anyone?
This is really what Apple should do with the AppleTV. Stop being dicks about it, Apple. People like something that can play their DVDs and maybe even BLU-RAYs.
"Basically, you're looking at a Timeline laptop adapted to the desktop"
Why would Fujitsu put an Acer laptop inside their little PC ?
This is just like my ION build. But at least 600 more expensive for the base config.
what about the heating issues?
I agree... we should do a little more paying for high speed rail systems... like between LA, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. Or Boston to NYc to DC (what we call "high speed rail" on that route is maybe 1/2 or 1/3 the speed of what Europe or Japan calls high speed rails).
With the right rail (and limited stops), it could be faster then taking a jet (once you consider delays in security checks and takeoffs).
comment system is broke... that was in reply to Li's making fun of European rail systems.
If you don't get Blu-Ray on the Esprimo you should get a Mac Mini for less and install the OS of your choice
Wake me up when one of these shiny little nettops finally handles properly bitstreamed HD audio... until then, they're all gimped, and the only solution remains a custom HTPC with the Xonar card -- which is actually pretty sad.
