Fujitsu's multitouch LIFEBOOK T4310 tablet makes quick work of Microsoft's Touch Pack
If Fujitsu was going for sexy, it certainly missed the mark with the LIFEBOOK T4310, one of the least attractive machines of its kind, but where the T4310 tablet falls short on style, it certainly makes up for with its excellent multitouch-friendly capacitive touchscreen. Playing with Windows 7's new touch features, it almost seems feasible to use the OS with a finger (gasp!), and the screen can also accept pen input (based on pressure-sensitive Wacom technology) when your blunt jabs aren't getting the job done. The multitouch prowess is most evident using Microsoft's Surface-inspired Touch Pack applications, which come pre-installed, but it's also a nice way to get around in Internet Explorer. Other perks of the machine include a 360-degree rotating hinge, a hot-swappable drive bay, and all the internal accouterments (SSD, 3G) one could ask for. Video demo is after the break.

It will be $2400 to start. About $3200 loaded.
Oh christ, thats EXACTLY the device ive been waiting for for years. Except for the input lag, and the intel graphics card.
There is definately no better device for uni usage right now, i mean its just perfect... relatively light weight, tablet, portable size, slot for an additional battery to support long battery life, good cpu. If just this thing came out before i bought my book a couple of months ago.
Now the only dealmaker or breaker will be the price. Im guessing somewhere around 2k$/2k€?
Love the modular bay.. really clever
I can haz?
With the capacitive screen and the wacom tablet this can't be under $2,000 when it comes out. It would be pretty useful for graphic designers but probably seems a little pricey for just the cool multi touch features. But having bought the Gigabyte t1028 tablet netbook I don't think I can ever go back to a laptop without touchscreen, it makes browsing on a netbook so much better!
It's nice that it has multitouch and a pressure sensitive pen. But using your finger doesn't seem all that useful in the os. It looked really difficult to select the correct button and he would inadvertently open the wrong applications. Also, those surface apps were mostly pointless.
This is almost a perfect tablet, I only miss USB3 ports and a OLED screen with tactile feeback . Oh yeah, and I would love if I could get it with Linux, or at least have the option to not have Windows installed... ;)
I'm a big tablet pc fan, have been a user for the past four years, and i own two of them. But if'a their is something i don't like about them is that they are slow. You can't find one with good specs on it. It's always something, either the cpu or the gpu. And something else, having a capacitive screen only adds to the frustration, cause the os isn't made for that. The buttons are made for mouse clicking not for finger pressing. Having to press the close button like 6 times before you actually get it right would really suck. Imagine opening the wrong software every time? Besides that, i really like it.
I've been using 8.5 " Fujitsu P1510D since it came out in 2006 as my primary computer. It cost $1800 back in the day.
It is Pentium M 1.2 ghz, 1.8" 80 GB HD (upgraded since), 1 GB RAM (upgraded from 500 MB), bluetooth, Wifi, no optical drive, 2 USB, SD card, VGA out, CF card, fingerprint reader. It is a touchscreen, 180 degree screen swivel.
Keyboard has large nearly fullsize keys, good spacing. I rarely use it tablet style or the swivel .. once in a while i have turned screen around to show people stuff. but is a gimmick more than anything However, I use the touchscreen all the time not to handwrite but to open apps or place cursor. I often reach out to screen on desktops when in office.
This was pre 'netbook' days, so I always fielded questions when using it in public bc of its size. I like the size. It has backpacked around the world with me, been used to program, create websites, edit graphics, write documentation, etc. The processor is nearly the same in perf as the Atom but has full graphics chip so perhaps it is a bit better.
Anyways, the build is high quality, durable and very functional. I wish Fujitsu had a device that was an upgraded modern version of the P1510 with a proper processor not an Atom. It would knock the socks off of any existing netbook, and I would snap it up in a heartbeat.
Well I don't know why I am ranked down because the people who did that are idiots and they should first know how a Capacitive touchscreen works. And maybe then they would know that you cant use a pointing device it won't recognize it and secondly there would have to be a glass panel because it won't work with a plastic one like the one they have there because of the following reason
"A capacitive touchscreen panel consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO).[3][4] As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the local electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. Different technologies may be used to determine the location of the touch. The location can be passed to a computer running a software application which will calculate how the user's touch relates to the computer software."
Shame you can't make a pen out of something conductive then, eh?
Styluses are problematic on conventional capacitive screens... and frankly that's a good enough reason IMHO to NEVER implement this technology on a Tablet PC. However I would hazard a guess that this is the newer WACOM capacitive technology, which is supposed to allow for both finger input and pen input via their proprietary stylus.
Fujitsu makes nice tablets, but their keyboards suck and the overall finish is plasticy.
IBM makes excellent tablets with fantastic keyboards, but they're heavy.
The best tablet might have been the Toshiba M200, nice high res screen, good keyboard, accelerated graphics. But they don't make them like that any more.
I've given up on tablets for a couple years.
Can I just point out that when they were using the stylus to write on the screen that they were doing it wrong? When you use a stylus to write on the screen of a Tablet PC, you rest your hand on the screen as you do with a normal piece of paper while you use the pen. This give you a lot better accuracy, and you won't look like a fool trying to tap on the screen as if you were pointing at it with your finger.
This Fujitsu tablet looks nice with that screen, but it has one fundamental and fatal flaw. It is running Windows.
Windows owns the entire tablet pc segment, and seven kicks ass. So, what's the problem?
That's the thing. MS has had tablets for years and has not progressed them at all. I'd like to see Ubuntu or Android in the tablet instead but I think I'll hold till the Apple tablet comes out.
Yeah, it'll be pioneering and original, unlike all of the tablets that exist, uh, today.
Bill Gates approve.
So do I.
Interesting stuff but it seems we'll still have wait for Apple to see how a multitouch tablet is done right - i.e. with a (real) responsive screen and OS. That's what all WinMo-touchphone-folks are immediately beggin' for - at least those who've ever used an iPhone. Predictable it'll be just the same with the tablet market. just my 2 cents (yeah.. rate me down now, haters ;)
+1 for you sir.
what a cute hand
Here's another video that I think gives a good review of the lifebook t4310, even though his accent makes it hard to understand aha.

You can configure the T4310 (or T4410 matte black) from Celeron 900 up to C2D P8700 2.53GHz CPU.
Very impressive! One thing I noticed, though, like most tablet convertible tablets, the display shakes when you tap it. So, you'd have to use your other hand to hold the screen while you use the touch-sensitive capabilities, unless you turn it into its convertible position. Kind of annoying. =/

Touchscreens ftw!
I would certainly like something like this. I wonder if I could get my boss to buy me one!
i want one
that look schweeeeet
