It's been a full year since
we asked if a few off-the-wall renders were indicative of Philips' next-generation Senseo, but at long last, the next in the long line of successful coffee making machines has come to light. Seven years after the first Senseo hit the scenes, the heralded machine will finally be made available in a new "square shape," with the appropriately named Quadrante doing everything a Senseo does but with edges rather than contours. Said machine will be available in Dark Stroke Black and Bright Style White, while the limited edition version by Marcel Wanders -- which hearkens back to the classic design -- spices things up with some fancy sequins atop a translucent red or translucent grey finish. For the java lovers in attendance, feel free to give the read links below a once over, and be sure to raise a glass to us while you're at it. [Warning: PDF read links]

I think Keurig does the one-shot coffee machine better. IMHO anyways.
I agree with you on the Keurig; I've had both the Senso and the Keurig and the Keurig is far better. And as far as Espresso, I coincidentally enough have a Nespresso Le Cube coming this week from Amazon.
I agree. My Senseo consistently produced very good coffee. My Keurig (actually, the Breville) consistently produces perfect coffee. If you don't need something that looks so nice as the Breville or has as large a cold water tank, pick up the $90 Keurig at Target. Also pick up the holder that you can put your own grounds into. You really can't beat it. If you have the bucks for all the K-cups, Coffee People "Donut Shop" is amazing.
You still have to clean a Keurig, and drink flavors can end up blending together.
I have yet to see the K-cup-based machine that can top a Flavia Fusion, especially where drink variety is concerned. You rarely need to clean anything, as the drink goes directly from the pouch to your cup; no nozzles/funnels/etc. Once every month or so, wipe the inside of the brew head with a damp cloth. It's convenient enough for me to I keep one on my desk at work, and I love being able to brew directly into a tall glass (Lemon Calm over ice... mmm) or a travel cup.
The biggest drawback to the Flavia system is drink pouch availability... you can find the Fusion machines in stores, but you have to order your drink pouches online. I've found a great place to get 'em, though, so this hasn't been a big issue for me, and I save quite a bit of money over buying direct from Flavia.
Did you guys run out of cell phones to talk about?
Coffee makers????
The reason why this won't replace Starbucks is because I wouldn't be able to flaunt my brand new macbook pro and iphone at home.
(BTW, contrary to popular belief, coffee and tech news are closely related.)
and engadget "stil" can't spell
They are bloggers, give them a break
Yes bloggers can't be expected to spell or understand language they just get paid to write.
School children are expected to be able to spell, bloggers should be expected to proof read, it really isn't hard.
agreed, especially since it's an actual spelling error. even web editors have spellchecking these days. i typically accept grammar errors in blogging, but outright spelling errors, no.
this shouldn't of been posted in the first place, who cares about coffee? and starbucks might as well be bankrupt. i hope everyone at engadget spills frappuccino on their macbook air's.
Hey Chode... http://www.stilcoffee.com/
It's a clever pun. One you missed. (and others) So while your slamming Engadget for what you assumed was a spelling error; all you did was express your ignorance in a glorious fashion.
oh okay. so you take a lazy sunday, bloggers with bad senses of humor, and no stories to produce. and what do you get? a terrible pun about a little known coffee company. puns are supposed to be obvious; not look like typos.
@ agent .25
yeah what a great pun it turned out to be, since engadget now corrected the typo. i wish i had the ability to spot a pun that isn't even supposed to be there.
I've tried the Keurig machine we have at work...and somehow in the half-dozen varieties of Keurig coffee we have in stock, I can't get used to the Senseo flavour I have at home. Maybe it is that foam that does it. That being said, Senseo is still a far cry from a good Lavazza, and I'm looking for an excuse to try something new, but in the 6 years I've had my Senseo, it still functions perfectly.
Question, is it all the Green Mountain coffee? Because their coffee is appalling in my experience, all of it, and thats mostly what the institutions buy...
I guess you mean Blue Mountain Coffee from Jamaica.. it´s considered as one of the best in the world.
That aside considering Starbucks as a reference for the quality of coffee is just a plain insult. Starbucks uses the poorest quality avaible and splashes in some flavours to cover their crap. It isn´t coffee its just a black mix with sugar and cream. So the comparison of Senseo and Starbucks just doesn´t make sense. That said.. I can´t say that Senseo is that great either yet its a nice invention for people who drink little coffee. I still prefer my little stovepot together with some good quality coffee.
@JZ
No, he means Green Mountain. And he is talking about the Keurig machine. Green Mountain is a brand name that makes many varieties for the Keurig machine. (maybe the senseo too, but I don't have that)
I had a cup of Senseo coffee before and i found the quality to be poor...the One:One system was equally poor...
Granted, Most of these machines are not as good as a decent normal coffee pot quality wise, At least from my experience for normal coffee, a good old drip-style coffee maker with a good burr grinder beats these things...
But my family has a Keurig and we're on our second Tassimo machine, The Keurig has a huge selection of coffee and some of it is actually pretty darn good, the Tassimo has the party trick of producing espresso and espresso-based drinks easily :)
I think for normal stuff the Keurig wins, its closest to the coffee i brew in a pot, but the Tassimo's ability to make espresso and espresso-based drinks is a very nice feature to have...
Agreed, Senseo just doesn't produce great coffee, I've even tried the "make your own coffe pod" devices and used much better coffee and never found the Senseo to produce anything worth drinking.
*coffee
@ Burns11
We have the coffeeduck adapter on ours and use Caffe Umbria coffee. Works well. Not a true espresso, more like an americano.
clements is so much better than starbucks
Dunkin Donuts FTW :)
Tim Hortons if im desperate..
I have to agree ^, ill take a dunkin donuts any day really.
DD coffee destroys Starbucks brew. I have to say that outside of a frap' every once in a while there is nothing really great about Starbucks beverages.
DD is just really nasty coffee. sorry not tasty to me.
I'll stick with my Tassimo! All else = FAIL
Good you can be first to have that hot coffee poured on your face :)
Yay! I love coffee! can you throw on some cream and suger while your at it. and maybe some whipped cream...oh and use real suger, none of that fake stuff.
In other news kitchen cookers will not dethrone resturants.
haha, i love it when people point out the obviousness of some of these engadget bylines.
Lets throw the ban hammer at him instead.
FAKE CREMA ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saeco or die.Tamp your own and make it Illy.
Tassimo, blech!
Your Saeco has the same kind of crema enhancing device as the Senseo. Also, Philips owns Saeco.
I'll stick with my Petra KM 45 - same pads as a Senseo - no expensive proprietary system -, better results. And it can do Cappuccino and Latte Macchiato, too. And it looks good and it's easy to clean.
@the chode You're right, no one cares about your snide comments. chode=fail
Drinking coffee from a square mug feels like it would be difficult to me. I'll stick with my round mugs. Will they still fit though? I suppose they will. You know what? I'm just not going to get one of these. That feels like the simplest solution to my imagined problems.
You're right; square cups do not work very well.
You can't sip from a flat side, since otherwise liquid will pour out along the entire side, spilling down your face. You must sip from next to a corner, and you need to angle the cup just right (to avoid spilling), and the corner feels odd pushing against your upper lip.
Round just works better. This is clearly a case where someone went from design to manufacturing without bothering with testing.
You know what's funny? Starbucks around where I live is about a dollar cheaper for a tall latte then the other local chains. That just doesn't make sense to me. I always thought Starbucks was the most expensive. I asked the local company and they said it was because they lost a lot of customers and had to do that to stay in business?! I wonder if this is true elsewhere.
I wish I could drink coffee but it messes up my stomache. One type didn't. It was something grown in Hawaii, but i'm not sure what it was called. Kona something or other. Not sure why this is. Maybe it was just a coincidence.
I should buy a coffee maker. I haven't owned one in about 10 years or so. A year ago I was going to get a Senseo or similar brewer until I read some reviews on them and heard about the prices of the coffee pods. I wonder who makes the best coffee makes these days? Hopefully not Mr. Coffee
and the moral of the story?
nobody cares.
TravisD, the messing with your stomach is probably the acidity. Some coffee can be downright nasty (battery acid nasty), while some can be super super mild. The region, the quality and the type of bean... all can come into that situation.
For my personal tastes... there are a few that I like (several ex-g/f's and the current one too have been VERY sensitive to the acidity in coffee). I have found that for my tastes and budget... eastern african coffee works well for me (Kenya and Tanzania). As well, Blue Mountain coffee either from Jamaica, or Mexico are pretty decent too. Stick with the medium roast if you can. The biggest thing is just to try a bunch of coffee, and find which one works for you. I have both a drip machine (a thermal carafe one so the burner on the bottom doesn't bake the snot out of my coffee and evaporate all the water after its made), and an espresso machine... both can make good coffee, or americano (given the machine)... but my grinder was the best investment I made.... it always makes my coffee better than it used to be when I had that little blade piece of crap.
Experiment! :)
Since when is a coffee maker a gadget? I think this one belongs at enappliance.com
Since gadget = * appliance: a device or control that is very useful for a particular job
Mmmmm. Symmetric...like boobies.
I'll stick with my french press.
same
I have 3 french presses, love them. But when I got my Senseo it slowly converted me, it tastes a bit between espresso & coffee and very fast to make and easy to clean
I love Coffee.
@metzmanj: I corrected your typo, no need to thank me.
"Yay! I love the cock! can you throw on some cream and sugar while your at it. and maybe some whipped cream...oh and use real sugar, none of that fake stuff.
