They certainly do love wasting money repaving perfectly good roads. There's a major street less than a mile from my house that has been torn up and re-paved no less than 4 times in the last 2 years. Tell me, how the hell is that a logical allocation of government funds?! It's actually in the process of being torn up again right now. It's not a small patch either, they tear up a good 4 miles or so each time.
Who is "they?" I'm assuming you're referring to your local inefficient government. Do you think "the government" is one large entity that loves to waste taxpayer money? I've lived in extremely affluent neighborhoods and in 2 of the 3 largest cities in the United States. Usually roadways are NOT needlessly repaved and are, in fact, only repaved when they are in dire need.
^ I can assure you this road is not in dire need. It's most likely due to Caltrans' idiocy (I'm in California BTW). Caltrans is terribly inefficient. They'll often re-do a project multiple times, wasting millions, instead of just doing it properly the first time.
On a side note: roads need to start being paved with that hybrid asphalt that includes recycled tires. It reduces wear on people's tires, the roads require less maintenance, and they last for MUCH longer than traditional asphalt roads, not to mention reducing the load on landfills from thousands of non-biodegradable tires taking up tons of space. It's really a win/win all around, other than the elevated cost, which is made up for by the fact that the roads last much longer anyway.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
