Video: Slim, wireless, LED-backlit Sony ZX5 LCDs prepped for November release
Sony's packed in a plethora of buzz-worthy tech into its ZX5 series of Bravia LCDs -- thin panels, edge-mounted LED backlighting, 240-Hz Motion Flow, and wireless connection between the media receiver section and the glass. The new 46- and 52-inch versions have got the styling portion of the competition aced, but we're still smarting over the move away from local-dimming Triluminos LEDs. As for the Motion Flow, we'll have to wait and see for ourselves if 240-Hertz is going to be the magic number to win us over. But then again, we're greedy like that; but there's something drool-inspiring about a 52-inch LCD that gets 1080p video wirelessly sent to its 16.6-mm thin frame. Somehow, we don't think our response will be different when these beauties are released to Japan in November. Video after the break.

I'm drooling.
F@#K YEAR!
Drooling like a fox.
Isn't F@#k Year the year of the dog?
"...but we're still smarting over the move away from local-dimming Triluminos LEDs."
Blame Samsung for popularizing the edge-lit LED sets. It's now just a matter of time before all the other manufacturers introduce their versions. I just hope that everyone else doesn't go crazy with the dynamic contrast numbers like Samsung has. It's gotten ridiculous.
I assume that they used edge-mounted LED's to allow the form factor to be kept so slim and sexy.
I'm pretty confident this wont replace the triluminous local dimming technology currently used in the X-series (the KDL-**X4500-in the UK or the KDL-**XBR8 in the US).
This TV will just replace the current edge-lit "KDL-40ZX1 (UK&US)" which is currently only available in 40", 120Hz (100Hz in UK) and can only stream 1080i wirelessly, but is only 9.9mm thick.
I'm sure if you hold tight, sony will release a new X-series with the same Triluminous, local dimming technology soon. In the UK, all of the new range ends with "5500", whilst the X-series still has the old suffix of "4500"... so if it follows suit, I'm sure we'll see a KDL-**X5500 pretty soon!
Third!!!!!!
turd!!!!!
Guys, you made my monday! :D:D:D
OO i love the Flush design. much better looking than the samsung version. the only problem, LED tv and OLED tv has so much in common, the only advantage of oled is the picture quality.
Aside from three letters and the general slim design, there is very little in common between edge-lit LED (LCD) TVs and OLED TVs technology-wise.
You need to read up. LED TVs and OLED TVs have almost nothing in common. "LED TV" just means the backlight of the LCD is LEDs. OLED TV means the actual pixels are made of tiny OLEDs and there is no backlight at all. Huge difference.
This TV, despite all the bullcrap spread by marketing, is still an LCD. Anything else said by it is a lie. Yes, it does have an LED backlight, but that doesn't make it an LED TV as much as their old halogen backlights made them halogen TVs (didn't see them advertising them as THAT).
When did Sony lie? Sony never said this was a LED TV. They market it as a LCD TV, because it is a LCD TV. Stop talking bullshit.
They never used halogen backlights. It was CCFL. (Cold Cathode Flourescent Lamp).
Actually, Sony used halogen bulbs in their SXRD and 3LCD rear projection TVs.
Sweeeet...how much plz?!!!
I came ..
I saw ..
I raq
I ran
I jizzed
i conquered
I laughed

I ended.
I resurrected.
I bought the boxed set
Samsung FTW
they are almost exactly the same
damn.. simply beautiful.
fapfapfap Good thing walls, rug, and sofa are white too.
please keep in mind that Sony invented the glass frame design
ok, no worries dude i will be glad to...
until Apple makes one that is.
It sounds bad, but when Steve Jobs dies, Apple will go under and I won't have to listen to you little Apple fan shits anymore.
I wonder how the speakers are going to be, and how much this will cost. I need to see this thing put through hell, especially the wireless link between the input receiver and the panel.
Or how mcuh, (sorry for the double post!!!)
Bah! Who cares about thin? If it's 16mm or 32mm or even 64mm -- I don't care.
I'd rather have better images than thin screens. Why oh why would you go from localized dimming triluminous LED to edge-lit LED?
Please optimize for performance and not thinness. If this is all you got, Sony, you can find me over at the Samsung booth.
I don't have access to the story immediately but the reason for switching is the cost of manufacture. Samsung was eating Sony's lunch on cost. Samsung uses the edge-lit model and it saves over $100 per unit to build. On top of that, many reviewers say the edge-lit Samsungs had a better picture.
Sony already used LED Side-backlighting, and was the first manufacturer to do so (YES, BEFORE SAMSUNG!)... The KDL-ZX1 was released about a year ago and is only 9.9mm thick.
The Triluminous backlight is in the X-series, NOT the ZX-series. This new ZX5 is simply a replacement for the ZX1.
Sony will release a new X-series, with the same (or maybe even improved) Triluminous backlight, but is obviously not ready to release it yet.
The ZX series is designed to be thin, the X series is designed to have a superior picture, you can't have both... Until OLED that is!
No US love?
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Samsung's ToC looks better. Samsung FTMFW!
I fit has 2 HDMI connection, some outputs for the Wii and something to connect a dvd to, then ill buy it :)
I haven't seen a tv come out in years without those...
what?
The Motion Flow feature blows; the whole 120/240 Hertz 'innovation' in HDTVs makes the image look like crap.
Explain how?
I'm guessing you've read too many blogs, and not actually seen a 50/60Hz next to a 100/120Hz or 200/240Hz Bravia. I work in a Sony Center in England (hence, we have 50/100/200Hz, not 60/120/240Hz) so I can judge all of the different models side by side for 8 hours a day, and 100 without a doubt looks better than 50, but 200 is to be fair not much of an improvement. Certainly they don't degrade the quality unless you set the motionflow to 'High' when it can look a bit fake. Set it to 'Standard' and it looks awesome.
What about Tru2Way?
