@Monkey with glasses: I heard that the new itouch is going to have a microphone as well. So it will be able to do skype on wifi. Dunno if it's true or not but it would be nice if it did. Can't get any closer to the iphone then that.

I hope they don't just upgrade the iPod touch with a camera, some hardware upgrades would be good too.. Apple upgrades their products little by little for sales.
Well, it's pretty sure that they'll upgrade to the iPhone 3GS chipset as well, so there's that.
How about GPS? Or would that just piss too many people off?
A camera is one of the last features/specs I would like to see added/upgraded :-|
Give it AMOLED, or better battery life, or GPS, or HD radio, or 1080p output, or 64GB, or less bezel on the top and bottom, or ......
It's seeming more and more that the new ipod touch is just going to be cheaper, with 3GS internals.
Hopefully the new iTunes features aren't complete gimmicks.
I'd actually put more stock in the 64GB than lower prices. They just don't have that much to gain by lowering prices and the "rumors" of such seem to be just coming from Apple fanboys trying to undermine the Zune HD. Here's hoping I'm wrong, though.

I am planning on buying it just for the faster processor, more RAM and for the BT/mic/speaker that my 1st gen touch doesn't have. And the doubled storage I expect. A camera is pure luxury, as far as I am concerned.
You speak as though updating the touch with 3GS internals is a *bad* thing...
I'm with you on the GPS, even more than a camera. But I guess a camera is a given at this point. If they surprise me with a GPS in there I'll byte the bullet and buy my first button-less player.
I agree. I just recently got a 2g iPod touch. I see how a camera could be fun for some things, like maybe augmented reality apps, but outside of that, don't you already have a shitty camera in your cell phone? If you have an iPod touch, you most definitely carry a phone around, so now we're just getting redundant features.

Honestly, we need more speed, GPS chip would rule, and built-in-mic would be groovy.
GPS and Camera is complete useless to most people who has phone. I rather have mic more than anything else though I wouldn't mind getting 3G feature. I know 3G feature is next to impossible.
If they integrate Nike+ and Bluetooth into the Nano, consider me sold.

if they gave ALL those features tomorrow, I'd run down to the apple store immediately and put it on my almost-maxed-out credit card just like all the other sheeple! ;-)
3GS internals definitely isn't a bad thing. It's just harder to justify the cost, since I already have a 3G.
But then, of course, if I were to get a new Touch, I'd probably give the final middle finger to AT&T shortly thereafter, and pay the damn ETF, so I could team up with Sprint when they release their Android offering.
After suffering for over 2 years, I've realized that having a fully converged device just isn't as important as having a network that works. For the record, I'm in a large city, so coverage isn't the issue w/ AT&T - it's congestion/capacity.

I already gave in to the 3GS. I'm loving the speed boost and video camera. And the capacity helps a lot. I'm not a mindless drone who wanted something shiny and new again, I really am using the new hardware to the limits. I use the thing practically everyday and enjoy the upgrade quite a lot.
If there were anything less I don't think I would consider it at all however.

Question if they put in gps where would the mapping software come from. Can not use google maps you would still need a data / wireless connection to get map update so some one would have to sell a complete mapping solution right?
I just hope those cameras do video too.

I'm friends with a few employees at my local Best Buy and I was told that they had to immediately ship a container of iPod Touch cases back to where they came from (because they had a camera hole in the back of them)... they were warned not to open them. LOL

I liked the idea of the iPod touch/phone but I would not have spent a cent on it. Then by chance I got one, even offered an few iPhones for fee. Well after using it I loved it. Sitting on the couch watching TV and surfing the net is nice. Watching movies or playing games on the bus to work is excellent.
Now that that a 3rd generation appears to be coming I will serious considering buying it. I will have to see if the specs justify it or if I have to wait to the 4th generation.
I wonder how much of a price drop will the current iPod Touches will receive in order to clear inventory. hmmmm

I noticed that the latest round of Reward Zone coupons for Labor Day actually says that they can be applied to the iPods. I can't remember a time when Apple ever allowed Best Buy to do that with those coupons; Apple products are usually excluded. I could see Apple doing it to help clear out the old inventory, but strangely, the coupons last more than a week (normally they last 4 days) which means that they can be used on the new iPods if they hit stores before Sunday.
Now Steve isn't going to be happy about that!

I was just thinking about the "leaked" pics of the new touch.... and according to the "oh-so accurate" fanboys who originally blogged them, the mic would be next to the camera lens... wouldn't that make it a little hard to use it as a phone?? Either that or you'd look like a total idiot talking on an upside down backwards ipod!! haha

does anyone else miss the surprise of the announcements? iPods have been so outted in the past few years, it's kind of sad. i actually liked reading the press conference updates to find what was new, when they do this it cheapens the conference a bit
