It looks like Engadget editors aren't the only folk who prefer technology that's
slimmer, cheaper, and better. According to an article at
GamesIndustry.biz, a group that charts retail sales in the UK is saying that sales of the PS3 increased over 999 percent in the week since its British debut of the newer, slimmer form factor. And if that wasn't good news enough for Sony, the console has also outsold the DS, Wii and Xbox 360 by approximately 3:1. Although the last time it was the lead hardware format in the UK was the first week of 2008, the PS3 has never lagged as far behind the others as it has Stateside. But still -- a near 1000 percent increase? If true, that makes the States'
104 percent increase seem lackluster in comparison. Then again, maybe the Brits never realized that
Disney Sing It! High School Musical 3 is available on platforms other than the PlayStation. That could explain a lot of things, actually...
Finally Sony are seeing progress. Good stuff.
yep they sold more than 150.000 PS3 Slim in 4 days in japan too
Return of the king~
Is it too early to decides the winner of the new consoles? If we wait, Sony will take it hands down.
The king has been walking the last few laps; he sprinted for a bit and now it looks like he's closed up to the lead, even though in reality he's already been lapped several times.
Numbers probably are better than what a lot of people were expecting with a price drop, but the real test is going to be if figures like this keep up.
when you start at zero with a new product, it isn't exactly hard to post a 1000% increase. Do the math.
@crescentdavid
0 * 10.00 = 0
Epic win for Sony.
i'm happy for sony too!
I picked one up to replace my fat 40gb and Im loving every single bit!
I love slim, cheap and better!
Buy later, Buy cheaper, Buy better, and sometimes you will buy better
"Buy better, and sometimes you will buy better"
What the fuck does that mean?
it means he's a dumb-ass
Means that sometimes sony likes to drop features off their playstations such as ps2 backwards compatibility or they leave weird bugs like the psp3000's scan line problems, and their slim redesigns are sometimes much worse that their original designs (ps2 slim any1)
which doesn't happen to other products like the iphone or the 360 where id you did indeed buy later, you won't lose any of the starting features and you will get a better product overall
@ANDY
I'm glad the 360 kept it's Red Rings of Death feature.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
LOL
@ANDY
Uh, yeah. That's what it means.
::backs away::
Of course the sale of the PS3 slim has increased with over 1000% since its debut.
You couldn't buy it before its debut!
Well no. If you're thinking of it that way, then an increase of 1000% would still mean they sold 0.
Well yes. It says "over" 1000%. It means they sold 0 or more - which is true.
@Muhammed: What? It's basic math. If you sold 0 before and you sell 1000% more now, it means you sold more than 0. Dumbass. Even a sale of 1 over 0 would be an increase of 100%.
@Jordan: 100% of 0 is 0. Any percent of 0 is 0. An increase of 100% goes by the same principle - still 0.
I really hope you just forgot the sarcasm tag...
Basic math, eh? Muhammad is right. And a sale of 1 over 0 would be an increase of infinity percent (sorta). And shouldn't you be in school right now, "dumbass"?
But yes, the title of the article makes no sense and should read "PS3 sales up nearly 1000% after debut of PS3 Slim" or something. They got it right here: "sales of the PS3 increased over 999 percent in the week since its British debut of the newer, slimmer form factor."
Actually, it says "nearly" not "over." So that means almost 0, if we are indeed looking at it that way, which is idiotic in the first place.
Yes, 100% of 0 is 0, but selling 1 more than 0 is a 100% INCREASE in SALES over 0. It's not a percentage of 0, is an increase over the previous number, which is 0.
LOL so true.
So you're saying 0 + 0 = 1? Stay in school, kids.
@Jordan You just don't understand math. There's a difference between increasing by 1 and increasing by 100%.
an increase in 100% does not mean an increase of 1.00 that would mean that there were 10 more ps3's sold than last week according to this report. an increase of 100% means x+(x*1.00)
if you substitute 0 for x, the end result is also 0.
a 1000% increase means they sold atleast 1000 units. since the least the could have sold is one.
sinjinn)
That makes sense in so many ways that my head is spinning :-).
oops.let me corret myself..
the least they coulda sold in the previous week is one.
a 1000% increase is 10 ps3...since a 100% is 1 ps3.
therefore the least they coulda sold in the first week of the ps3 slim is 11
so 11 is the answer.
funny thing is that oasis usually puts out album through epic (sublabel of sony)
* mostly matte
* serious reduction and/or elimination of chrome trim
* new logo
* new price
* PSP Go to be selling for $50 less. Har!
(I know it's hard to take the PS3 in the train, but still...)
What's not to like.
The new buttons ... I prefered the old ones.
But that wouldn't stop me to buying it.
AWESOME!!!
The challenge with PS3 slim and other so called media extenders is that you still need a computer which will stream or copy the music and videos to your console. So my question is if you still need another computer, why not put that to your living room instead.
http://mymediaexperience.com/2009/08/ps3-slim-ready-to-digital-living-room/
Instead of linking to your site you could get a NAS or home server instead, you could also simply plug in an external HDD. Choices, choices...
Don't worry Tukom is a "non-expert" anyway
I have a PS3 in one room, an XBox 360 in another and a Wii in a 3rd. I have all my media streaming to every device from one PC (running PS3 Server, PlayOn, and TVersity). Using your suggestion I would need 4 PCs (one for my normal PC usage in my study and 1 for each TV). But you do what works for you.
I don't know about you but i think most people don't want to sit using their desktop in their living room (mostly likely) hooked up to their widescreen tv. It's a nicety but if you spent as much time at your computer as i'm sure most people here do it's just not feasable, how could you work effectively sitting on your couch with a wireless keyboard and mouse.
A friend of mine decided to buy a second desktop for that sole purpose with his television, thinking he could browse the web, watch movies etc all the time, he simply doesn't use it, he's too lazy to turn it on everytime he needs it and he can't browse the web without zooming in and out constantly to be able to see the text comfortably, and the cost of the pc was much more pricey then the cost of a ps3.
The ps3 is a clearly visible, easy to use interface that i think integrates more seamlessly into a living room environment, and with the price drop i think you'd be mad to put your desktop there in it's place, even if you used it solely as a media center (which i do mostly, have a 1TB HD sitting plugged into it with an abundance of shows and movies) it's still worth it's buck, besides there are blu-ray players alone that cost just as much, and of course if you enjoy your gaming blah blah blah, rant over :)
Seriously? No one's commenting on "WORLD'S TOUGHEST GRANDPA"?
So wait... all this time the reason why ps3's were'nt sellin' was cos its too darn expensive?
microsofts strategy of selling cheap arcade sku's and getting profit by selling expensive peripherals suddenly makes so much sense right now.
Am I the only one who thinks the new one looks like a cheap Tonka toy? I like the original one better. I guess it doesnt matter since it plays the same games (well mine plays PS2 games as well).
I thought so at first, too, but it's starting to grow on me. Of course I haven't seen one in person yet, it may look a lot better or a lot worse in the flesh, there's no way to know.
Of course, I'd never replace my 60 gig system. I never had a PS2 system during its heyday so I make liberal use of the backward compatibility. It's nice to have a huge selection of AAA games available to experience for $10 or less. I don't really care about dated graphics, I spend a lot of my free time playing 80's arcade games anyway.
Personally, I thought the old version resembled a shoe box. The "Spiderman" font wasn't helping things much, either but the biggest reason why I didn't buy one was simply the price. Now I might actually consider a PS3.
I pre-ordered, i bought, and I returned it. The thing was a piece of shit. Blue-ray is a dead format with streaming already available everywhere else.
*Facepalm*
Thank you for your worthless comment. You couldn't be any more wrong.
I want to pee on you
