Sprint now offering $100 service credit to Pre buyers who port a number
We were expecting a Pre price cut today, but it looks like Sprint has slightly different plans -- instead of lowering the outright price of the handset, the carrier is offering new Pre customers a $100 service credit if they port a number from a different carrier. Yeah, that's a little odd -- especially since the credit is spread out over three months, instead of applied all in one go. We're guessing Sprint and Palm are just trying to lure new sales without having to openly cut prices on the Pre and undo its "premium" image, but as far as psychological marketing tricks go, parceling out a discount over 12 weeks might be the least effective one we can think of -- we're pretty sure most people would rather take a $100 price cut at the top end of the deal. Still, the end result is that the Pre is now $100 cheaper for switchers -- anyone running out to buy one?

Enjoy the pay times, boy, THE PAY TIMES 5 WHAT YOU PAID FOR SPRINT. HAHAH BYE MONEY!!!!!
A Pre could have saved Freddie Mercury's life.
The joke is on you, homo.
To even attempt a joke like that, (and the one i pulled,) is just wrong.
Glenn Beck? Is that you? Ewww, you Mormons are so yucky with your scrambled brains and all.
True- and a noble truth at that. BUT, let us not forget that it was Sprint who killed Kenny... Those Bastards!

Running to buy one. Had to stop running as I'm the 1000th person in line. What that means is I'd rather take the $100 price cut than the not-so-wise marketing hulahoo Spring and Palm got themselves wrapped into.
Try this for another $50 off: Put the pre and a service plan in your cart and hit "Clear Cart Contents", you will get a screen offering you another $50 off
Nice. I just tried it and sure enough it does work. $150 for the pre, plus the extra $100 off for porting = $50. Can't beat that.
good call. it works.
I was initially tempted by the Pre until I played with one in a store-- I didn't like the keyboard at all, it's too small and the keys felt mushy. I'm not a fan of touchscreen phones, but there's not much point having a physical keyboard if it's not a good one.
That said, I think this is a pretty good offer, and if I was still leaning towards the Pre, I would jump on this. $100 is $100, regardless if it's right away, or over 3 months.
I'd jump on it but I'm already a pre owner drinking the pre juice. Not a bad deal.
Offer this for the HERO and I will port 2 lines that same day!
A discount like this does nothing for me. Mine is a company phone currently with AT&T (whose service sucks royally) and if I want to jump ship the cost of the phone up-front cost would come out of my pocket. So I'd pay the same price, but the company would reap the discounted monthly rate.
I've always been a fan of Palm (have always used and still currently use the Treo) and want to get a Pre. But I won't do it until some functionality issues are resolved. I must say though... the HTC Hero is calling to me except the price is way to frakkin' high yet. That said.. if the Pre gets some software upgrades in by the end of the year I'll jump. Otherwise I may go Android.
I REALLY wanted to get the Pre, seeing as my 1st gen iPhone contract is way over. So I stopped by a Sprint store to play with it a couple weeks ago. The first impression is that it feels very flimsy. The two halves wiggle around quite a bit. I remember reading about some early models having an issue of it breaking apart like that. I also found the touch screen to be very smudgey and not very responsive. The UI overall is very slick and easy to like. The keys are extremely small (and I have very small hands). It's actually not as comfortable to type with one hand as I would imagine. All in all I was disappointed. This "deal" would've been the feather that tipped me over if it wasn't for the apparent quality issues. And since there's no way I'm going to get locked in for another 2 years with the Death Star, no 3GS for me. I'll see how the 4G iPhone goes. Meanwhile, my old trusty will have to do.

You people seriously need to go extinct.
SERO is dead. Get over it. Sprint still offers the CHEAPEST PLANS WITH THE BEST VALUE through the employee referral plus program.
I bet you're outraged about the McDonald's dollar menu too. Hamburgers used to cost a nickel!"
Nah, Palm does....so glad there the cheapest....there's a reason for that brainiac...cause they are ranked one of the WORST for customer service as of August of this year and they are STILL BLEEDING CUSTOMERS!!!!! Look I can use capital letters too!!!!
THEY ARE BLEEDING CUSTOMERS, OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO BE CHEAPER...GOOD LUCK PAL!!!!
This is relevant to my interests
I really wanted to like the Pre. I was all set to switch from an iPhone to the Pre as soon as it came. It came out, I tried it and damn if the keyboard isn't too small. So small it almost unusable and it's the only way to input text; I know, an onscreen kb is on the way. I also know that many people say that you get used to it and that is probably true but people also get used to walking with a limp and seeing with the use of bifocals. Just because you get used to something doesn' t mean it becomes a pleasant experience. So know I'm looking to switch to a Sprint Touch Pro 2 and hoping its resistive screen doesn't drive me batty. Us smartphone users are never satisfied.
Palm need to get the Pre 2 out ASAP to fix the flaws in the first one. Apple can afford to take time to release new products thanks to the size of their portfolio. However, Palm need to do what Nokia have done with their forthcoming update to the N97 firmware and move quickly before all the unique features of the Pre are copied by their competitors.
Palm have a far far better comprehension of usability and cross PIM app integration than Apple, and given the resources, could blow the iPhone and all other smart phones out of the water. Why? The people behind it are extremely smart and have excellent track records.
Palm has released some software updates (at a similar pace to Apple) and the software will get better. But there are more difficult to solve hardware issues. The battery just doesn't last long enough (but there are replacement, larger batteries). The keyboard is actually more difficult to use if you've big fingers than a screen keyboard. The Pre's keyboard IS better than Nokia's. The sliding mechanics are also not as robust as they should be. The price break is good for consumers about to buy a Pre but it's not a good sign for a new phone. Perhaps Sprint are trying to sign up people before its available from Verizon?
They should offer to pay off earlier termination fees for switchers, especially from ATT, like me. :)
Interesting strategy - this should become standard for all carriers. They could encourage users to use it as a down payment on their early termination fees with other carriers.

Shortest-lived offer ever?
just saw that, if you wanted one but didnt pull the trigger its gone!
verizone + iphone is a fantastical unicorn that I will ride in my dreams until the future catches up with the obvious. who wants to fight a mighty dragon with me and lick it's mighty nipples in defeat?
It still works. it doesnt advertise it but when you add to cart it tells you you will still get 100 in rebates and another 50 for choosing clear cart and accepting the 50 off... :) wow they are still screwing up.
No sorry, its gone..
Phone fanboys I get... this is what you have, so it's what you know, so it's what you like other things feel foreign and 'not quite right.' And there are so many similarly spec'd devices at the high end and so many niche devices all down the line that there is a 'right' answer for everyone's needs/desires. So you like yours, fantastic! I like mine and that's good too.
Carrier fanboys on the other hand... WTF? News flash, every US carrier sucks- and more than a little. Arguing that yours is better is like arguing about whether the world would have been better off with Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini or Hirohito... sure you can make a rational argument for each but once you do and you win, then what do you have?
As for all this Palm/Sprint doom and gloom, maybe you're right and they are both going down the tubes. Even if they are it's not like people with either are going to be left holding their Johnsons, someone will buy them on their way down (and likely from a very predictable group)... it'll become Sprint BTYB Verizon or Palm by RIM or Nokia, w/e.
For customers i think the telephone answering service is the best.......it is good to support them every time.......
