Video: High-res image enlargement tech for PS3 and PSP takes extreme closeups to a new level
The GigaPan has opened new doors in ridiculously high-resolution imagery, creating pictures so huge our feeble human minds can't hope to comprehend them. Sony's getting in on the action, not so much with the idea of capturing historic events at gigapixel resolutions, but providing the same sort of effect by linking multiple documents and items together and allowing you to zoom from one to the next. The video after the break shows a number of demonstrations, including what looks to be a release calendar that, inside each cell, contains high-resolution photos and even videos of whatever is releasing that day. Hidden advertising is also possible, like a mosquito on a man's face tagged with an ad only apparent after you've gotten uncomfortably close to the poor man's face. The adult entertainment opportunities are endless. Also demo'd is a new voice recognition library for the PS3, dubbed PS3VR, which can take you straight to your Cindi Lauper albums even if you're not a girl and are seemingly disinterested in having fun. That tech isn't quite so interesting, but it and the high-resolution libraries are intended for release to developers... eventually.

That's rather like Deep Zoom.
bingo, microsoft's had seadragon in research for years. works with silverlight and javascript controls. very impressive stuff. it will most likely go into windows mobile, zune and future versions of the windows os.

Well I was wondering how long it would take for them to add voice recognition...to the main OS...its already in quite a few games one of which is SingStar.....now I just want it to work off my Bluetooth headset and not be limited to use only with the PSEye...
True, but I rather use the Pseye than the microphone. Voice recognition just like Xbox's Natal, will come real soon. Here's hoping this comes out in time for the Ps wand launch.
Oh, and bluetooth, microphone and pseye more than enough, but more options might be welcome, just don't know how they will pull that off.
Voice recognition is pretty common in some games, the PSP translator software already does voice recognition. The biggest issue always is accuracy.
Personally, I was surprised that Singstar could properly understand that Japanese gentleman's thick accent on names and words like "Cyndi Lauper"; which was pronounced more like "Shin-di Lo-pa".
If Google maps could be this smooth.. or any other online map service for that matter.. but it seems more suited to discrete information blocks (eg. calendar) than something continuous like a map..
Reminds me of this image:

This seems to be the same thing as Microsoft Labs' Seadragon and Deep Zoom. Regardless, pretty nifty. http://livelabs.com/seadragon/
PS3VR is actually very interesting Engadget. If you swap out your HDD and try to use the PS3 as a modern day digital jukebox you quickly come to the realisation that the current inability to search content against file names and meta-data in either Music or Video is actually a massive oversight in basic functionality.
One seemingly endless (if alphabetic) list not only becomes irksome, but it slows the Playstation down something chronic as it races to cache every bloody album cover or video loop that you whizz past in a bid to get anywhere.
The thought of being able to 'Play music by Coldplay between 2000 and 2002' or 'List action movies featuring Megan Fox' is actually really cool, if above and beyond what I could really use *right now*. Haha!

I could see the voice commands being used in Killzone 3:
"Kill, Kill, KIIIILL!!!"
...
YOU WIN!
I like how they misspelled MIC in the translation with "mike"
I like how they used professional translators to translate "mike".

This is what one would call a Zoomable User Interface (ZUI)

Hidden advertising is going to be a tough sell. "Imagine, that the viewers won't even be able to _see_ your ad, unless they get really, really lucky. Neat, huh? Why are you leaving?"
HOLY F@#$%ING SH@#.
THIS IS AWESOME!
I'd love to see this actually deployed. It'd turn the utterly dreadful web-browsers on the PS3 and PSP into something not merely "adequate", but "really excellent". The tech would need to be able to convert existing HTML links into the scalable sub-images on-the-fly, however, otherwise all content would need to be custom-written for the engine.

Have you no urge to ever use your brain? You cannot make something out of nothing, magic doesn't exist.
It is old technology that is poorly demoed IMO
There isn't any indications where the links are it is just a huge treasure hunt. (They could have just made a game with it)
PS3 and PSP is crappy for browsing the web.
Lets just see how they implement it.
It would be nice if it becomes part of Web 4.0 standard or it would be meaning less since browsers can't make use of it, i doubt webmasters would change their websites just for PS3.
Is there an app for that yet?..............
It'll be perfect for those zoom-in's they do in movies where they take the 4 pixels over someone's shoulders and "enhance" it into a 5 Megapixel image of the bad guy.
WOW this is just Like gpuViewer looks the same as what is shown on the PS3 take a look http://www.gpuviewer.com/
heres are videos of it running

I wonder if they could incorporate this into the XMB...
Zoom + Porn = WIN!!!
imagine if they had this for websites u wouldnt have to click links just zoom in
it's a Mandelbrot Fractal Zoom!!!
Amazing, I couldn't see it right at first but by holding ctrl and scrolling with my mousewheel in my firefox everything zoomed.. including the video.. smoothly...
Get it?
Have you no desire to ever use your brain ? The PS3 and PSP's web browsers don't work like that. Which is precisely why this software is interesting; unfortunately, you're apparently the only person who is unable to see this.
I'll be clear so even you can get it: This 'new' technology isn't that new, and it's not that impressive.
And no I don't use consoles, never will most likely, and if I did it wouldn't be a PS3.
And no your bounce didn't work, even if it did it would not scale, not even with magical sony zoom.
