Apple adds video camera, larger screen to new 5G iPod nano
Apple sure took long enough to get to this, but just as rumored, the iPod nano is seeing a hotly-anticipated refresh today. The big addition? A camera that just so happens to shoot live video (but not stills, apparently). On the lower left of the new fifth-generation nano, you'll find the camera as well as a speaker and microphone, but unfortunately you'll have to sync it with your computer before you upload clips to YouTube. The camera-laden nanos will be available starting today in a rainbow's worth of hues (nine, if we're being precise), with the 8GB model pegged at $149 and the 16GB edition at $179 -- though, we should mention that yellow and red are Apple Store exclusives. Oh, and oddly / tragically enough, the iPod nano is officially the only dedicated iPod with a camera, leaving the iPod touch -- and every human on the planet -- scratching their head in befuddlement. Meanwhile, iPhone 3G users are equally bewildered by the fact that a mid-range iPod can shoot video while a fully-capable smartphone cannot.
As for other specs, you'll find a built-in FM tuner with Live Pause (!) and iTunes Tagging, a pedometer (you know, for that fancy Nike+ integration), VoiceOver, support for voice memos and a larger 2.2-inch display (up from 2.0-inches) with a 376 x 240 resolution. As for the camera, we're told that the video capture mode snags footage in VGA quality (640 x 480) H.264, with up to 30fps and AAC audio. If you're feeling fancy, there's also 15 real-time special effects including Sepia, Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido and Motion Blur (among others). As for dimensions, the 5G nano remains identical to the 4G nano at 3.6- x 1.5- x 0.24-inches, though it somehow shaves a whopping 0.02 ounces as it climbs down from 1.3 to 1.28 ounces. Curious about battery life? Apple claims that the new nano can last up to 24 hours when playing back audio (same as 4G nano), while video playback should zap the rechargeable battery in just five hours (which is up an hour over its predecessor).

I'm 12 today. :)
Live Pause (!)
...and before I get flamed I will add "greatly improved."
You have to admit though Sony was onto something they just never followed through.
What the heck it neutered my post!
I think I used a less than symbol.
Anywho I was making childish fun of the (!) symbol and pointing out how I am glad Sony's eMarker left its mark. They had an interesting idea and never followed through with it. Shazam does a good deal of it but I'm glad it was finally integrated with an actual radio.
if the touch had a camera, then nobody would but the iphone
hey I want to know if you can take pictures? if not, what about of making a video and then getting a photo of a part of the video? I think that this is possible anyway I want other recomendations.. thanks
Apple seems a victim of its own success here. They seem to have a very hard time trying to figure out how to differentiate their products without screwing their own users when this should have been well thought through before the introduction of the iPhone.
Top of the line phones now canablize other mobile gadgets. ie MP3 players, digi-vid cameras etc... By keeping things out of the iPod touch and iPhone, they can squeeze more dollars out for a while longer from their user-base. Bad, bad, bad and blantantly obvious.
They can't keep making exscuses to not give their best device top of the line features. It looks like they are simply trying to take features and split them up into different devices. It will work among some of the fanbase but outside of it, it simply won't work. I see where they are going with this strategy but this is just sloppy tbh and a kick to the nads of the users.
"it's only rock n' roll !!"
it's only FM radio and 640x480 video... and i don't like it.
Being an iPhone 3G, and third gen iPod nano owner, I'm pretty set when it comes to music and the sort. When my iPhone begins to run dry, I make the move to my nano and I'm set for the day. You might figure from what I just said that I have no intention of picking up a new nano, but if you think that, then you are quite mistaken.
What really sells me on this fifth gen nano is the feature many are perplexed/complaining about most: the cameria. I own a Nikon D5000 that records stunning video, but that isn't practical to carry around with me everywhere I go. Jailbreaking my phone for Cycorder is an option, which I have explored and went ahead with before, but I just wasn't a fan of it.
I love photography. I also have a thing for videos as well, but I have nothing worth using to capture them. I was seriously considering the Flip Mino, since it is a widely popular video camera, but with this new nano I think I've found my match. Granted the cameras position on the nano is odd, simply turning it to get the full picture is just fine. It fits my needs perfectly, but that doesn't say much for the next guy.
I don't think Apple's plan was to add an awesome FM tuner and excellent video camera that increases the Nano's usage value was the goal.
Apple always releases product upgrades in steps. With the constant "upgrading" and "new" stickers on each item it keeps the less than educated consumer base hungry for the latest and greatest model. They differentiate the models by something as easy as color. White ipods/iphones vs black ipods/iphones represented cost and suggested value. Nano with video camera vs Nano without video camera.
Furthermore, whether it be the new iPod Nano with less than perfect video and no stills, or an iPhone 3GS with all of the above plus still photos... you're still purchasing an Apple product, which is what they want.
I love the new ipod nano. It's sleek and as easy as ever. I remember when the first ipod came out still, such a long way to come. I just grabbed a new ipod in blue from here: http://www.computersncs.com/rd_p?p=191614&t=9544&a=20306-sipod+nano&gift=20306
One word: Sexy.
Does anyone know the time limit on the "Live Pause" feature? I saw that you could rewind it as far as 15 minutes, however I'd like to know how long it will record and then resume if left sitting. I can't find this anywhere.
Thanks!
