iPhone / iPod touch OS 3.1.1 is live!

That's right, gang -- OS 3.1.1 for iPhone and iPod touch is alive and well and we're installing it as we speak! We're looking forward to digging into all those Genius mixes, syncing options and, most importantly, a reasonable way to manage apps. Stay tuned!
Update: Yes, managing apps from iTunes is every bit as magical as we expected. The update is free to iPhone users and iPod touch users who've already shelled out the big bucks for OS 3. If you own a touch and you've held off, however, your patience has paid off -- the upgrade now only costs you $4.95. Huzzah!

trying to download the update 3.1.1 and it's not going so great. help?! it's in my iTunes but when i try to finish the download i get an error 404 message, URL could not be found on server. what does this mean?!
Yeah mines doing the same thing! It said I bought it and I have an error or 306 or something
Got 3.1 right away, but the 50 minute+ synch and backup, arghhhh. iPhone is stuck to my Mac backin up. Can't close iTunes 9 to finish installing it 'cause of the synch. I think I'm going to be a brave girl and leave the house without my iPhone.
I'm at work and haven't been able to update my phone yet, but for all 3g users: did this new firmware speed your phone back up? I'm SO sick and tired of waiting for my phone forever when I try to do the smallest tasks because of 3.0. Please tell me it's improved.
so far = *much* snappier. i could give a rat's dowry about new features, I'm glad that it's not lagging anymore.
Apple could finally learn how to do this whole incremental update thingy.
comparing categories to being able to do it on a larger screen and show however many pages of apps you have all on that one screen is hilarious...I get your point but you'll be able to have both...not to mention, afaik, moving apps is itunes update, I don't think you need the firmware update on the phone to use it.
Did you guys all get the iPhone configuration Utility in the itunes update? It says:
iPhone Configuration Utility lets you easily create, maintain, encrypt, and install configuration profiles, track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capture device information including console logs.
Those profiles are how one would enable tethering
so should jailbreakers not upgrade?
Seriously, still not volume control in iPod for BT???? WTF
I can MMS now with my iPhone 3.0.1 AT&T 5.0cell file... Can anyone else???
That pop up that let you skip music tracks change volume etc, is completely gone from the iPod Touch. When double clicking the home button it quits what ever app you are Safari etc. and takes you to the iPod player instead. I tried every option under general, to no avail. Not Fraking cool Apple.
That controller only comes up while you are PLAYING music, always has. Otherwise it takes you into the iPod.
Oh man. That really does suck!
Have they improved battery life?
I'm Not against free enterprize but for the cost of these things the updates should all be free.
Any news on the battery life? The update to 3.0 sucks down battery juice to nothing on the iPhone in half a day. Does anyone know if Apple fixed that with 3.1?
Going thru these comments and so far I see nothing about having the ability to add photos to text messages on iPhone 3GS. Word from Apple was it would be available late summer....isn't this late summer? and is this the update that's supposed to have it?
Haven't tried the 3.1 update, since I'm waiting for the Dev-Team to make it jailbreak-friendly, but here's the list of enhancements according to the slide shown in Jobs' talk today. The slide is at 4 min 30 sec in the Podcast video.
3.1
- Bug fixes (?)
- Redeem gift cards in app store
- Improved wi-fi performance when bluetooth is on
- Enhanced iTunes support
- Paste directly into keypad (phone keypad I guess)
- Display available iTunes account credit
- Anti-phishing in Safari
- Fast forward & rewind from headphones (finally!)
- Save video from mail & MMS
- Improved Exchange calendar syncing
- Practice mode for accessibility
- Video trimming "save as new clip"
- Improved syncing
- iTunes U improved organization
- Sponsored links in Maps (whoa!)
- Remote passcode lock (requires MobileMe?)
- New camera APIs
- Accessibility ???? (illegible)
- Bluetooth voice control (presumably 3GS only)
- Direct copy of contact info
- Sync videos to ???? (illegible)
- Genius app recommendations
- Genius playlists
- Precut ringtones in iTunes Store
This list is a little longer than the enhancements list at http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/ - I haven't seen mention of the headphone fast forward/rewind or the sponsored links in Maps before. I also have no idea what "Direct copy of contact info" is - does that mean you can tap-and-hold to select and copy fields or whole records in Contacts?
Can anyone who's installed the update verify any of these?
i'm getting mixed reports of the benm tethering hack, anyone kno for sure?
I just noticed something funny.
Being a Jersey boy I wanted to buy a Bon Jovi ringtone and when I did a search on my iPhone I came across their song Always as a ringtone. What is odd to me is that the full name is "Always (Ringback)"
Can iPhone or AT&T do ringback tones like Verizon does? I imagine they have the technology to do so but I have not heard of it til now.
You mean when someone calls your phone and while waiting for you to answer they hear a song?
Yes AT&T has that.
I tried everything even playing music, I am going to do a full restore hopefully that will fix it.
Thanks for letting em know its still there
The setting is under GENERAL >>> HOME>>>> iPod Controls (change this to ON)
I apologize if you already tried this
My 3GS is 3.1.
I updated yesterday. Now I get "this accessory is not designed to work with the iphone" with a device that says "designed for it" and has been working for months. yay.
3.1 seems to have broken my "Shake to Shuffle" feature =/
Anyone else?
THIS FIRMWARE DOES NOT SOLVE THE AVRCP BLUETOOTH PROBLEM!!!!
Wtf, why should we have to pay for a update. Sony doesnt charge, Microsoft doesnt charge, this is completely lame, all they want is our money. I say screw dat Im keeping my current firmware till its free, which will b a while from now, oh well. Keep it up Apple ur a scam artist.
Not the best $5 i've ever spent, oops I mean $4.95, but still worth it!
I have an 8GB & yesterday(9/27/09) I purchased the upgrade for only $4.95, it said I purchased it and it takes 30 minutes or more depending on the broadband connection and I waited a whole day and nothing happened ! This isn't working unless I'm doing it wrong, please help ?
Not true, furious.george. I'm looking at a Touch with 2.2.1. Double punching the Home button at any time in any app brings up the volume and play controls, with or without music playing. Maybe it was different on 3.0, but not "always" since it works in 2.2.1.
I will not upgrade my Touch OS until Apple stops badgering me every time an update comes out. They should show me the update message ONCE. If I don't want it, I say No Thanks and that's end of it. Instead, every freaking time I plug in my iPod when an update is available I get the stupid update or else message. It took a few days before I was offered a "No Thanks" link. That's BS. Annoying users into buying stuff is not a great business model.
Apple just keeps on pissing me off. If Windows was even close to a usable OS I would switch in a heartbeat.
iphone un lock
