If by private info you mean the songs in your iTunes library. That's how Genius works, it takes the tracks in your library and matches them with similar sounding tracks. It's not that iTunes analyzes all this for you, it just hits a database on Apple's servers.
Is this another $10?

You won't have to pay for minor version updates (3.x), you will only have to upgrade to a higher major version (4.0, etc)

I'll agree with you, there. Apple did innovate the smartphone game, but they have since lagged behind and failed to properly "innovate" on their own movements. In 2 years we'll be introduced to "true" background processing and notification systems for the iPhone, and all of the sheep will eat it up as if Apple is king. Almost as ridiculous as people paying 600 dollars for video recording. Heh.
if they want to pay 600 they can.... but i didnt, i paid 2 bills, so that is their choice.... i would rather paid 200 for video on an iphone, than 100 on an android... or any other device.... its one of a kind experience, not to be duplicated by another.... imitated, but never replicated.
You may have paid 2 bills up front, but your paying for it over 2 years with your expensive AT&T plan. The iPhone does not cost 200, it's 600. aT&T subsidizes the cost, why can't people figure this out.
What I do not understand is this. The only thing I can come up with that the Iphone does not have is a front facing camera (who cares no one else does either except japan) MMS which should be here next month and background processing... Like I am using my phone for a computer! Who gives a shit weather it can process a torrent in the background because you are to inpatient to wait for porn on your laptop. Get over it, the Iphone is by and large the best phone out there..

if i were to have a blackberry plan i would be paying the same, the only plans that are less are the ones on sprint....the same company who is losing customers every quarter, and it might cost 600, but I DIDNT PAY THAT, so it didnt cost 600...... just like a new car costs 40k cause the sticker says it, but the dealership cuts the cost to sell it...... i look at it as an investment, i can do so much more on this phone, i can access my brokerage accounts quickly to make trades, and make more money... does BB have an app that does that, how about android.... man o man
You still don't understand. You didn't pay the 600 up front, but you are paying for it over the period of your 2 year contract. Think about this one for a second:
An iPhone costs 600. AT&T sells them for 200. That's a 400 dollar loss to AT&T. AT&T pays Apple full retail price for the phones. That would be 600/700 dollars. That's like saying they're paying you 400 dollars to sign a contract. Now over the 2 year period there are fees in your AT&T plan so that they recover this 400 dollars a little bit month-by-month, it's included in your monthly service. By the time your contract expires, you have a 2 year old phone that you JUST finished paying for - only you don't know it. This helps add to your expensive AT&T contract.
This is why the people who still had a contract but wanted to get the 3GS were being charged full price for the phone. AT&T had not yet recouped their loss from the first phone they sold them. Why would they go out and say, "oh well here's another one for 200, please take our 400 dollars". For once in their existance AT&T actually did people a favor by allowing them to upgrade early. They had no need to do so, they had signed contracts. It was the people who would not fulfill them.

What the hell are you talking about? $600? First, we've had video recording since day one, either you're an idiot, a troll, or you mean BY APPLE. Are you high? By "true" background processing, I take it to mean BY APPLE, as we've had it for years....I've spoken to the reps selling android phones and even they agree it's not ready yet...getting there, but it's not there yet...so congrats on being a little early. Notification system? Again what are you babbling about? Android didn't or doesn't support multitasking either last I read so again, what exactly is your point because you sound like someone who couldn't afford an iphone and are just whining. By the way, the Pre, supporting multitasking, slows down, jumps and stutters as of the last update before this week. Good luck.
the pre looks nice, but onces you use it... its slow.... every user i have heard that has it says the same thing when i pick it up "its a little slow, not as quick as the iphone, but i still like it" just said it right, not as good, slow, and with those damn small keys, who cares... those are pointlesss.

3.1 (originally codenamed Janus, of which two betas were published) includes a TrueType font system (and a set of highly legible fonts already installed), effectively a serious desktop publishing platform for the first time. Similar functionality was available for 3.0 through the Adobe Type Manager (ATM) font system from Adobe.
3.1 was designed to have backward compatibility with older platforms. As with 3.0, version 3.1 has File Manager and Program Manager, but unlike all previous versions, 3.1 and later support 32-bit disk access, cannot run in real mode, and include Minesweeper instead of Reversi (though Reversi is included in some copies).
the Finder has been updated to 5.3, and laser writer is 1.1
be careful with memory leaks in the Chooser because it won't get fixed until 3.2
don't expect the multitasking of multi-finder yet as that won't come out until 5.0
ignore the previous comment as that is from the windows world and obviously not knowledgeable of the real 3.1

Improved battery life for 3G/3Gs is probably due to the new modem firmware, probably optimizes the way it achieves and holds a 3G connection. That's just a supposition, though.
"Overall faster" is what's most interesting to me. I remember my original iPhone when it was 1.0 and it was frickin snappy, the keypad never paused or lagged. Now we're at 3.1 and it's only lagged more and more with each release. If Exchange support weren't so important to me, I'd go back to 1.0, but 2.0 with Exchange support was the laggiest version so far, and everything after it only slightly less laggy. If they had just managed to stick with the original peppiness of 1.0, they wouldn't need an overheating CPU and GPU in the 3GS just to keep up with crappy OS code. Why is the keyboard not taking highest level priority when I type on it? Why can Safari page loads lag my input device? I thought that's why Macs were so great, because the software always gave priority to user input and always reacted, even if it was just with a churning pointer, at least the icon would visibly "depress" so I know the computer processed my click.
I really hope there will be noticeable improvement in battery life.
I'm tired of watching the battery life percent tick down just using a 3G phone for.....3G

When is this update available? My iTunes says version 3.0.1 is the current available.
They said "today" that means it could go live at any time before midnight. Doesn't mean it would be live immediately.

I find it funny every time I read a iphone article and all the apple fanboys come out. They use such words as " innovate, best smartphone ". Truth be told was is Innovated about mms, tethering, copy/paste, mutlitasking, etc. on the iphone ?? These things have been around forever, yet finally being brought to the " BEST SMARTPHONE " ever.
Another interesting point is, you paid $600 but have no control over the device. But that's ok ??
I've been trying to understand this... i.e. I pay for cable but they tell me i could only watch 3 channels of the hundreds out there because they deemed them unsafe ? Or you buy a pc but Microsoft said you can't install anything on it without there approval, right !
Im not a fanboy of any company as they look out for themselves. I do use a HTC Touch Diamond which i paid $600 ( NON CONTRACT ) or so but have the complete freedom to add custom roms, install any app and do pretty much what I feel like doing with it though i might be moving to android based phone soon.
PS - written from a Linux OS Pc.
My question is, does the internet tethering hack (non jailbroken phone) still work in the Settings -> General -> Network - > Internet Tethering.

so help me understand this, I can pay $1.29 fora 30 sec ringtone or I can pay $0.99 - $1.29 for a DRM free track from AMAZON or whichever other music download service and create my own tone and have the entire song to listen to. Does anyone actually pay separate for ringtones??????

I thought the same thing too. But, I am currently downloading 3.1 for Touch in iTunes and didn't have to pay anything. I think that price is for users of the 2.0 os. So they only have to pay 4.95 now where we had to pay 9.99. Still a crock of crap. IMO

I can confirm the update on my iPod Touch (Gen 2) now allows it to connect via Bluetooth stereo to a car receiver (Anycom BAR-10), which is previously only recognized, but wouldn't connect. The Bluetooth streaming also doesn't seem to be interrupted, when using Wi-Fi as previously experienced on occassion, however I haven't yet had the opportunity to put it completely through its paces.
What they missed was to integrate AVRCP functionality!!!!

I have been told by one person, if you have the Tethering turned off, before you do the firmware update, it will continue to work after the firmware update, when you turn it ON.
Haha, I always enjoy people who dislike the iPhone. I've always said that people who diss on mac products are either scared that they're better than the alternative (ie. Windows/Palm) or can't afford them. I'm no fanboi, I use the best of Windows and Mac computers at home, but people who rip on Apple really piss me off, neither one of them would be where they are without the other one but Apple is doing some really amazing things, who cares if the iPhone can't cook you dinner and tuck you in at night -you're using what is probably the most advanced phone system in the world, deal with it.

Not seeing issues here... But then again I have a 3GS and have never Jailbroken it. Though, had other non-OS related issues.
