iPod touch prices slashed dramatically before today's event (nano and classic too)
Seeing is believing and we're seeing price drops across each and every iPod touch on Apple's on-line store front. The 8GB model is now $189 (was $229), the 16GB model is $249 (was $299), and the 32GB model is just $279 (was $399). Now what could Apple be making room for?
Update: And now the nano and classic have fallen under the axe. The classic has been cut to $229 (was $249) while the nano now starts at $129 (was $149) for the 8GB model or just $149 (down from $199) for the 16GB nano.

Dramatically?!!!
Really Engadget, really?
well, considering that Apple rarely puts gear on sale and then it's just a few % points off when it does... yes, a cut from $399 to $279 is pretty damn dramatic.
I'm happy I got my IRIVER SPINN 8gb for $160 brand new from newegg!;))) It's better than freaking ipod/itouch/icrap!;) lol
apple's prices are always high because they want them high! They do not care about customers they care about money only!!!
Just teasing you, Thomas.
I just found the word a little too dramatic, if I may say. :)
I saw that word and I thought that the price of the 32GB was @ $100, you know what I mean.
I agree with Thomas this time. 30% off straight from Apple, and not a refurbished item, is a pretty uncharateristic cut from there, at least from what I can remember.
I'd have to say that $120 off $400 on the 32GB model is pretty dramatic.
You may have him on that Thomas but this:
"Now what could Apple be making room for?"..
I mean come on you have been reporting on this stuff for around a month or so..
It isn't so dramatic this side of the pond, in fact there have been no price cuts at all. As it stands in the US its $279 for the 32GB and in the UK its £283! LOL. Google is quoting the conversion rate as 1USD is 0.604GBP, so it should be £168.64 which would only be £3.84 to what we're currently paying for the 8GB!
This is not DRAMATICALLY i think apple wants to release the new ipod for the same price range to compete with Zune HD so they had to drop the price for older ones
Who would get an older ipod over the newer and cheaper ipod touch?
I think all other retailers will follow apple move so they had till the end of this month to get rid of the older ipod before the newer one arrive
Can't we have a reasonable discussion about the ipod touch without bringing up the lousy Zune HD... I mean what does this thing have over the ipod touch??? Jeez all these Zune HD fanboys have started to get on my nerves...
It can output HD video , superior audio output quality but it's not as slick and cool as the ipod touch plus Safari browser on the ipod is much better.
Have you not seen the transitions that Tegra is capable of? They may not add the functionality of the device, but in terms of "slickness" the UI of the Zune HD absolutely blows the iPod Touch out of the water.
But it has Internet Explorer, which rather undermines its credibility :(
Sayonara, Zune HD and Zune lovers everywhere. These are the final nails in the Zune coffin which will be heading into obscurity. Now even the most recession bound individual can afford to purchase an honest-to-goodness iPod Touch. No more settling for a mere Zune HD.
Why do the poor always say things are "overpriced" rather than say "I'm underpaid?" People walk into Porsche and Mercedes Benz dealers and never utter that word "overpriced". They always feel they're getting what they pay for.
Seriously... I picked up an 8gb Touch for $189 for Christmas last year.
Still overpriced if you ask me.
Has anyone actually said what kind of audio chip is in the Zune HD? or are people just assuming that Microsoft will be using the same one currently in the Zunes....
So ...
Sony lowers the price on the PS3, Microsoft follows suit a week later. The Engadget article talks about Microsoft lowering costs as a direct response to the Sony price cut (even though MS officials said that the price cut was a long time coming).
Flash forward to today. MS has the much hyped and very well reviewed Zune HD set for release. Apple decides to uncharacteristically (as other posters have pointed out) slash their pricing on the Touch to fall in line with the Zune HD. Yet, not one word of speculation on the part of the Engadget writers that this price cut might in part be driven by the competition that the Zune HD presents.
When Microsoft does anything it is viewed as being done because Microsoft is reacting to the market (external pressure). When Apple is mentioned you are always left with the impression that Apple does whatever the heck they want. They are impervious to market conditions. One company is a leader, the other the follower.
@ Typical Engadget Tech- Nerd
You know I keep hearing this thing about comparing computers to cars. I'm a car enthusiast, I love all kinds of cars, but in order to compare to anything, one REALLY needs to know the compnents to a car. Computers, for instance, be a mac or pc, both use the same processor, Intel Core 2 Duo. However, even the cars in which you name Porsche and Mercedes, both have different motors to offer. It varies even greatly with, say a toyota camry. Therefore, a mac IS NOT a luxury computer. In fact, it's more comparable to say a toyota camry with a 3.5 v-6 engine is a pc, while a toyota camry with a 3.5 v-6 engine with gps is a mac. For a mac to qualify AS luxury, it needs to have a better performing processor. But even then, It's really hard to compare cars to computers. I'm keeping it as simplistic as possible.
NO THANKS APPLE!! Too late for your scraps.
why did the price go back up?
For the ipod mini blow! You blow in it to make commands. Its so small they implant it in your ear.
How do you blow into your ear..?
the new iStraw
The iPod Blow is in no way compatible with your current straws
Silly Patriks7. You get someone else to do it for you. It's part of the ipod makeout line - all touch and blow.
Blow is small white and expensive.
So if it's all "touch and blow", can I place it in a different place than my ear?
Sure.
But it's going to make urinating hella painful.
@CJ Your doing it wrong, try something like
"YEAH!!!! But, wait... aren't sharks salt water only"
"Sure, but how are we going to get a top hat in the mudkips size."
No, unlike you, I choose to create my own jokes, rather than reciting other people's memes ad nauseam
HA SUCKERS!
Straws blow, silly.
The iPod nanos are on sale too.
8GB - $129 (was $149)
16GB - $149 (was $199)
yes, this is the new ipod invisa. it's so small you can't even see it and it holds every picture ever taken.....ever.
:P
making room for the zune HD.
now if only the ipods didnt need iblowsyoutillyouturnblue tunes
I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a serious comment or not but I would agree that this indeed making room for the ZuneHD. I think the realisation is that ZuneHD is going to look more appealing to customers so a price cut of the iPod lineup is necessary in order for them to appear competitive. This seems a pretty sensible move since it doesn't sound as though Apple has much up its sleeve this year, although it could also be that they've managed to keep something secret this time. In a few hours time we will know all. But, make no bones about it, it does look as though Apple has a serious competitor in the ZuneHD and this is one that they will need to do something about.
Mind you, it is also possible that Microsoft will shoot themselves in the foot again. Time will tell...
I ranked Ops up because I agree with him about iTunes.
iTunes really does blow. It drives me crazy because the iPod Touch is such a nice device, yet I have to put up with iTunes at my computer in order to use it. If I could just use my iPod with Windows Media Player, I would dump iTunes immediately. No joke. I'm sick of it.
Since everyone else is making sensible replies to this obvious troll :)
This is an entirely different way from what I was expecting for the iPod Touch to take on the Zune HD. It still seems like it's not enough and seems that Apple, like everyone else, was a bit blindsided by the 'HD. What the Touch really needed to compete directly with it was to have the new ones(yes, I know they aren't out, but do you really think they'll be priced anywhere near the older generation ones?) be priced similarly. As is, it's looking like we can expect new iPod Touches at about the same price-points the 2nd gens were at until just now, making them substantially more expensive than the equivalent Zune HD. Basically: this doesn't bode well and Apple better have a damn good ace up its sleeve to pull this one off.
399-->279 is pretty dramatic, isnt it
all ipods have lower prices now. ipod touch, nano and classic
Doesn't look to be any change on the UK site. I wonder if Apple will follow MS and just ignore anyone outside the US/N America with their fancy new PMPs :-(
we never get the updated prices on time - my company store has updated, but not the UK retail one,lol...
No change down under either.
So atm we (in the UK) are paying $465 (inc VAT) for the 32GB vs $279 in the US (excluding sales tax).
here in germany the difference is even bigger, $ 545,76 (inc Tax)
that is ridiculous
Eyes up here, DangerRabbit....
Prices on Canadian store have dropped as well!
This bodes some foul news for Australia. The last dramatic price drop (USA) earlier this year, for the Mac range, actually caused prices to go up here!
Even classic fell down to $229 (was $249)
Yet us brit's don't see a saving in sight :(
No pricecuts in the Netherlands either. As usual just US gets their gadgets dirt cheap. The rest of the world pays extra to compensate.
