iTunes 9 breaks Pre media sync... what did you expect?
Here we go again: round umpteen of the fight to break and re-enable Pre syncing with iTunes is now underway thanks to the release of iTunes 9, and we're sure there's plenty more where this came from. Endlessly amusing to casual observers, yes, but Pre customers are the ones losing out -- sure, Palm might be able fix this in a jiffy (especially since they continue to tout compatibility with the Pixi), but meanwhile, media sync's out of the picture once more. Stay tuned for more on this as it develops.

Incoming, Palm Pre update.
I'm thinking it's more like checkers.
Why anyone is using iTunes to sync to a Pre is beyond me. There are so many good 3rd party media apps that use way fewer system resources.
*This* Pre user is not being left out because I deleted iTunes from my PC a day or two after I installed it. If Palm turns it's back on this shit I will be happy. I'm tired of hearing about it.
@ CtrlBurn
Hear hear!
What a way to ruin a nice date (09-09-09), nothing but hype which became hope which ended with nope.
@monkey with glasses: Yep- I would have been happier if Sega said they were going to start selling Dreamcasts again. I still remember the "Do you still own a Dreamcast?" thing. Pity it turned out to be fake.
Face-Palm
I mean the number of patented ideas (functions of the device) that Palm cloned on the Pre wasn't bad enough right ... do we all remember which of those functions Apple threatened to sue Palm for were? Anyone?
So now we take iTunes. I mean c'mon. Apple's the biggest, baddest kid on the block (fiscal smart phone block that is) so they're bound to be challenged, attempted to be punk'd from time to time, but don't get upset when they prevent a wannabe from using their 'ware.
Would you simply let me walk into your house, eat the food in your fridge and use your toilet - without asking?
But these forums are just for venting ... not logic ...
Palm Pre ... Attack of the Clones!
:o|
Perfect image to accompany this. Bravo!
Bravo to the fish slapping dance!!!
But I'm clueless as to why it's a 1G Touch.
This is probably why the webOS 1.2 update was delayed.
GO GATORS!
Indeed! Go Gators!
Go-go Lowest Rank!
your move pre...
Wow, I'm shocked!
rut ro indeed
Sero
But does it break Pixi sync?
How are Pre customers losing out? They can still drag and drop like the rest of the non-iPod world. If anything, the added functionality (when it does work) is nice to have, and shows copious amount of cojones on Palm's part.
They can still use iTunes sync, too. As long as they don't upgrade their version of iTunes. Not a big deal.
yeah, i hate it when people whinge.
I guess iTunes sync is critical for people who don't even know where or how on their computer are the songs saved. All they know is clicking on the "Buy" button in iTunes and that song appears in their music list.
I'd love to corrupt these peoples registries so iTunes needs to be reinstalled.
"shows copious amount of cojones on Palm's part"
That's one way of looking at it but I'd suggest that it is total idiocy. I've said this countless times, unless this interface is officially blessed by Apple then the only people who are going to suffer are Palm users. The only way that this all ends well is if Palm does a deal with Apple and stops this ridiculous playground nonsense.
now fix this palm so we can have 1.2 on our pre since its so important. compared to other issues the pre has need to be fixed than its connection to itunes.
I expected 3rd gen iPod Touch to have camera.
I see what you did there.
do they have fm like the 5th generation nano ?
really ?
Cat and mouse, I'm enjoying it.
When Pre gets the sync back, post a picture of 3 Stooges
i expected it to update nothing that i use and break the pre sync. just like palm always does. Call me when there is a decent reason for me to update from itunes 7 or mediamonkey.
Won't be updating my iTunes :-)
Nokia has already shown how to avoid iTunes COMPLETELY.
You are right, although i'm sure you will get voted down by the lefties around here... If you don't like the ethics of people like Apple using a proprietary sync protocol, vote with your feet, don't whinge about it, reverse engineer it, then complain about when Apple revert it to its intended functionality. Can you blame apple for wanting to keep hold of all the R+D they've put into making iTunes/iPod the (imho) most user friendly music syncing experience?
Calling Songbird, now is your chance to get some press!
Actually, I'm trying out the Zune software. If it's good and even sort of works with my iPhone, it's replacing iTunes for me.
Zune syncing an iPhone? That is an utter fail.
@Andrey No your not. Zune software ONLY works with Zune. OMFG!!!!!!! MS is trying to strangle your freedom fries.
Palm is doing their customers more of a disservice with this whole thing than helping them. Relying on what another company does for syncing playlists and music is such a bad look. Just do it properly, by integrating the iTunes meta data in your own software (like Blackberrry, Serato Scratch, etc. all have) and help out those that have bought your product.
Hear hear. How many times does this have to break for them to get a bad rep amongst consumers? They should suck it up and make their own client.
I don't understand what's so hard for you people to understand. The Pre doesn't need iTunes to sync media. It's just an added feature for those that have and like iTunes. I can drag and drop media files in whatever folder I damn well choose and the Pre will autoscan and add them to it's library. I can use MediaMonkey and sync to it. I can use Song Bird and sync to it. It's not a 'disservice'. It's something to accommodate those people who still prefer to use iTunes. Why you would prefer that piece of bloated software is beyond me, but the point still stands.
I hate iTunes, as it's horribly bloated, but when one company has the most widely used media program, locking out everyone else is ridiculous. Whether or not the software is any good, it's unacceptable to force consumers to use apple hardware since they're already familiar with the software.
We're treading dangerously close to the Microsoft / IE territory from a few years ago.
@melloncollie
It's a "disservice" when an advertised feature doesn't work. The customer does not care whose fault it is - they just want their Palm device to work as advertised. I don't think they are interested in excuses like "it's Apple's fault" since that doesn't sync their music for them.
@eyerishman
I am quite sure that Apple would support Palm's devices in iTunes if they paid them to. Why some people think that Apple has an obligation to support competitors devices for free is quite beyond me.
Jobs to Rubinstein: "I'm back, with a new liver to boot, so no piggybacking iTunes for you!"
i just looked at my itunes just to see if there is stuff that maybe i've ignored that i should try. I see "itunes DJ"
so the mixtape "itunes dj" made had like 20 song but two were ten minutes of random chapters in seperate audiobooks, and one was a random chapter in a Dave Chappelle standup. "Itunes dj" is a crappy DJ. Another Useless Itunes feature. Yep no reason for me to update.
Maybe tag your files properly so audio books and comedy tracks don't show up in your random playlists? Oh, you'd rather complain that Apple doesn't have a way for iTunes to magically know the contents of an audio file without quality meta data? Continue on then.
"I HAVE SAND IN MY VAGOO"
See, I made a tl;dr for you!
@ddub - "iTunes DJ" isn't the best at generating playlists but it does allow people with iPhone and iPod Touch's to 'request' songs. Pretty narrow use case, but cool none the less. Apple introduced "iTunes Genius" playlists that do an impressive job building dynamic playlists. Give that one a try. And now iTunes 9 has "Genius Mixes"...
actually my tags are 100 percent perfect. And all my audiobooks and podcasts have audiobooks and podcast as their genre. I also don't make random playlists. I've got about 50 playlists all made by me. And the songs itunes picked were mediocre. They were just all rap they didn't flow though.
@eliotw yeah i tried the genius too. several times. wasn't remotely impressed. Part of the problem is i'm a former hip-hop dj and certain songs work to create a vibe. certain songs banged in the club at the same time. certian songs work great together. itunes just can't create that. maybe it's fine for other genre but for me it does't remotely feed the hip-hop head in me. not like my own playlists that recreate mixes from 1991, or summer of 88, and no it wasn't constrained by just picking songs of that year. Regardless. i don't use, it's not possible for it to do what i'd find useful. i don't need genius or itunes dj. i don't need it to make playlists. oh by the way it took forever for itunes to scan my files for genius like several hours. oh and i don't have an iphone or a touch. i got a nano, a 3g, and a 80 GB 5g. i like the itunes layout but on windows it hogs resources and lacks advance media management and all they really update now is the, like you said, touch and iphone stuff that i don't care about. no reason to update. i'm only on 8 cause somehow update automatically got checked and it did it itself. i even have a saved 7.2 install. i just haven't put it back cause i'm lazy and other then stupidly moving numbers to the bottom of the list there is no difference to me between 8 and 7.
Nokia has also how to NOT sell products in the U.S. that said there's no reason to update itunes anyways.
Why doesn't Palm just write their own syncing software so all the Pre-tards won't suffer from Palm's shenanigans?
hardly any suffrage going on drag and drop or Windows Media >>>> Itunes syncing anyday
i agree
ment i agree with ravensfan55
Because people associate iTunes with music the same way they associate IE with "the internet".
Apple should not be going out of their way to break compatibility. It is anticompetetive behavior, and helps no one.
honestly it's only the itards that get mad at it.
"honestly it's only the itards that get mad at it."
Er, what? You do realise that this makes no sense. Apple fans don't care if the Pre or other devices sync with iTunes (hey, other devices have been doing it for years) but the difference is that we also don't get mad if Apple breaks the synchronisation functionality that Palm has hacked together. Rather, we'd like to see Palm do a proper deal with Apple for official support. Frankly, I just feel sorry for Palm users who are getting mucked about by Palm on this issue.
Ouch. This back and forth must suck for Pré owners (all 3 of them).
oh please you must not know how to count or read..... http://gizmodo.com/5283156/more-than-50000-palm-pres-sold-more-than-150000-apps-downloaded
and that was back in June
@ridley182 hahahah ..... good one +1 for you
Palm Pre owners don't rush out to download the newest iTunes. New store, Genius (whatever that is), better cover flow? No thanks.
Not really. I like my Pre way better than the iPhone 3G I had before. I haven't needed or wanted any of the features in iTunes for a long time and so I don't update every week or so when a new one comes out and I have been fine. There are many other methods for syncing my Pre and my computer, look at precentral.net for a couple lists. I think it is really fun to watch Palm piss off Apple. Each time Palm finds a way around Apple's software, Apple has to spend the time to develop ways to combat it and then bother all of their users with a new iTunes update.
There have been well over a million app downloads from homebrew in just the past few weeks. That, plus the move to Canada, Verizon, Europe and the introduction of the Pixi means that Palm is going to have huge market share within the next year or so. Maybe not as much as Apple, but enough to give Android a run for its money, and enough to get a good stable of developers.
Competition is a good thing.
Successful troll is successful
Sheesh. Palm is like a limpet clinging to a whale that just won't let go.
ironic, since the pixi preview was just posted yesterday, and the Palm rep spoke of how there would be iTunes integration
Ampache Mobile for Pre - 400GB server on my cell. Goodbye sync itunes or otherwise.
I notice you seem to be absent on most of the other posts about Apple today, Zak, but rather jump on the only Apple-related post that (to you) is a positive for Apple. Interesting. Very interesting.
Whether or not it is Palms fault (which it is), my question is this, why are you so god damned annoying? You're a troll and there's no way to say it simpler. People vote you down simply because you're an asshole.
Zak - I think whatever point you may have made, right or wrong, sank into the quagmire of obnoxiousness you surrounded it with.
bdav - I thought "lefties" were the latte-sipping Apple users? Did I miss an update to the narrow-minded labeling guide?
Palm really should let this iTunes thing go... Create an app like the BB Media Sync or just promote doubleTwist but don't play this stupid game. If I'd be a Pre-owner, I would feel really pissed off by Palm...
What I'm finding curious about iTunes 9 is the fact it had me log into my iTunes store account in order to share over my LAN? WTF is up with that?
Because apple owns your arse.
I believe that this is so that they can enforce the "share with up to 5 computers" limit.
Oh noes! You mean Palm will have to come up with their own method of syncing rather than getting to ride on Apple's coat tails?
What an unfair world.
Apple and Palm can both suck a fat one.
who cares? itunes doesn't work that well anyway. so tired of getting 20 duplicates of the same song in my library.
Oh yeah? Well _I_ am tired of getting 20 duplicate whiners who hate Apple for irrational reasons, replace the s in Microsoft with $, and spout how linux is for nerds.
Why can't you people just go back to the papyrus and hate everything equally like good people should?
Um, ever heard of exaggeration for effect? Also if you are going to bring up articles to prove a point, why not use something a bit more up to date instead of months old? http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2009/09/02/palm-pre-sales-to-whiff-targets/
Oh wait, you can't because most newer articles only talk about the steady decline of Pre sales (which weren't even that hot at launch to begin with), down 50% in just three months, my bad.
If I turn the contrast up really high on my crappy monitor here, "lowest ranked" comments completely fade away. It's great.
yes but does it still sync already jailbroken iPhones w/ 3.0.1?
why the hell would you WANT to use a media player with a minimum 72MB...usually around 200MB+ (ive seen it hit 800MB) memory footprint while running. VLC is around 10-12mb even WMP is only about 30MB
no doubt, WMP running and playing right now on Vista is using 15MB...iTunes can blow my big one
Sync with zune microsoft wouldn't turn down pre money.
For the record...if Palm and everyone else thought there were soooo many better alternatives to iTunes then they would not keep patching it every time Apple prevents them from bootlegging their software. If Palm wants a music interface so bad...invent one!!! Or license it...just stop trying to steal it...yes they are manipulating the software and thus stealing access.
I realize those of you who steal music/movies/software via bittorrent and the like think this is no big deal or striking a blow against "the man" but it is not legitimate...full stop.
^^^ This
I have a Pre and have tried the itunes sync. I think it's way overrated. It's so hard to figure out what will and what won't sync. If find it just easier to set it up as a USB drive and use windows explorer to drag and drop to manage my media on it.
All this hype will be forgotten when Windows mobile 7 comes out, you wait and see. That's because we'll all be ancient and drooly by then.
Keep giving Palm that publicity Apple, smart move!
there IS such a thing as bad publicity, you know...
There's a logic here that I'm not quite getting. Are you trying to say that it is good publicity for Palm that their devices DON'T synchronise with iTunes? I can't say this is making me want to buy a Palm product but whatever floats your boat.
Meheheheh... Breaking news indeed!
Hey guys, I'm not sure how many of the pre's couple hundred thousand users use itunes as their main source of syncing. One thing is for sure....I don't. I find this "banter" between the two companies to be quite amusing. I'm not the least bit agitated or inconvienced. To be honest, when I exchanged my 3gs to go over to the pre--it was the last time I actually used Itunes. Anyways, onward with your "Palm make your own software client (450 employees? fat chance)" & "Play properly with itunes like everyone else" babble...... I'll enjoy my cpu scaling and multitasking (yea yea i know...theres an app for that)
)!_!(
LOL...you exchanged your 3GS which came out after the pre to buy your pre, what you bought a 3GS, used it for a couple days then bought a pre...uh I call BS on that one...nice story though troll, go back to your dungeon.
Doesn't iTunes also enable folks to buy stuff directly from Apple? (not just syncing)
Why would Apple want to stop this?
I have to be missing something here...
thanks for any insight.
let's see.....why would i exchange my 3GS? had a 2G, a 3G. Said I wasn't going to get this phone as a minor update to the same platform I was using the past two years or so. However, I did. Promised MMS, hows that going for you? Tethering (I actually HAVE an app for that...hmm..even in infancy)? Oh yeah. I'm seeing that calling someone a troll has morphed into the same dynamic as the homophobe-call everything they don't like gay dynamic. Logic, fact......opinion sure. But judgement based off of what? you not owning either phone. BUT, If you have.......LETS DEBATE!!!!
oh yeah, bought the pre mid-late July. So three weeks of "this is quicker than before" and "there's a video camera". Idle hands are.....well you know the saying. So, keep it fresh, mix it up. I'll try Android at some point im sure, when HTC or Sony or even Dell (maybe not) puts some real horsepower behind it.
