Palm Pre falls to $149.99 on Sprint
Nothing like the announcement of a new webOS device to spur a price drop on the first, is there? The Palm Pre -- which has held steady at the $199.99 on-contract price it launched at back in June -- has finally taken a rumored $50 dip down to $149.99. That figure includes a $150 instant rebate plus a $100 mail-in rebate, which means you'll actually be paying $249.99 in-store to walk out with a unit -- but considering that the Pixi's only signed up for a vague pre-holiday launch window without pricing details, the Pre's still the cheapest webOS device available (of course, it's also the most expensive).

I think this will be a very very good option to the iphone, if not a better one.
whatever you say
Newsflash: The Pre is already available in stores.
Oh mighty Steve! Rise from the dead and strike these heretic dogs for turning their back to the almighty iPhone! Let their soul scream in eternal hell!
Here is my honest opinion and let's put the fanboy talk aside.. Pre has no chance against iPhone
even if the price is lowered to $99. Palm is hoping to grab shares from other handset makers,
not from iPhone users. This should be clear to Palm or else Palm will die quickly if they go head
to head with iPhone.
I think I look like the guy in the pic when i smile........hmmmmm
They finally admitted that no one wants a pre so they have to lower the price.
This is why Apple slashed the 8GB iPhone price from $600 to $99.
This just gets better and better, I was just about to purchase one today.
That's a steal!
STRANGER DANGER
Awsome... and Palm Pixie Announced. So coool!!!!
Honestly I don't get how people love their iPhones with crap AT&T service. The Pre is better for all the things I use it for. No contest.
competition... without the iphone there would be no palm pre.
Right. Because the iPhone is the beginning and end of all good things in the cell phone world.
Have fun worshiping Steve Jobs silly fan boys.
Fact: My iPhone didn't work when and where I needed it to.
Fact: My Pre does work when and where I need it to. And it's got 3G that works when and where I need it to. And I can tether with it.
Those are the only facts that matter to me. Not the ones about visual voice mail and sticking it to the man (aka the carriers).
why do iphone fans have the personality of a giant douche, its called competition people.
I bought a Palm Pre at launch (stood in line at 5AM to get it) and had it for 3 weeks before I used my 30 days to return it. I then got the newly announced 3GS afterward.
I really really love webOS. I find it way more intuitive to use then the iPhone OS. I really do get sick of pressing that damn home button all the time. Also, Sprint had a better network in my area (Seattle) then AT&T does, although AT&T is pretty good also.
The main reason I didn't keep the Pre was due to the hardware. Although it doesn't feel cheap by any means, It just didn't feel as solid and well-constructed as the iPhone is. I wasn't confident that the Pre hardware would alst me 2 years without breaking down in some parts. Also, the overall UI experience was not as smooth and lag free as the 3GS. I'm still surprised at how blazing fast the 3GS is compared to the Pre even though they have the same processor.
I definitely prefer webOS to any mobile OS I've used, but I'm still waiting for the perfect hardware (GSM hopefully). If Palm can build a phone that rivals the iPhone in build quality and at least match it in terms of spec (8GB really is too little), I'd happily switch back.
lol, my Pre had to roam when i was in my apartment. My iPhone gets full signal. Yeah, how do i possibly put up with that awful AT&T network..
I guess it's a good thing we don't live in your apartment then.
I had full service with both devices and liked them both. But I couldn't justify paying 40 bucks more a month for the iphone. Over two years thats almost 1,000 dollars more for the iphone. I'm glad I waited and got the Pre a few months after launch. I've had no problems with the hardware and the software updates and homebrew has made up for all the shortcomings of the phone.
iPhone is great phone BUT to be honest AT&T sucks... I would buy an iPhone if it goes to Verizon...
Palm Pre is great phone too. :)
nice
It may not be as popular as the iphone right now, the iphone has had several years to build a reputation while the Pre is brand new, its fighting against something already established. And even though apple fanboys insist this isnt selling I have seen quite a few pres about. The pre can just do so many things the iphone cant.
Its been selling at Bell stores for 150 here in Canada since launch almost, not at all Bell stores you have to go hunting, but it is possible to find it for the discounted price.
Yeah, because the iPhone did not have to compete with Blackberries, Motorolas, Samsung, and all the other well-known, already-stablished, popular companies/brands which, ironically enough, have been in the business for years and yet are desperately trying to imitate and catch up with the iPhone.
Since when did any of those companies you listed offer anything near what the iPhone offered when first launched? I mean the best thing out there was probably a Windows Mobile phone like the HTC6800. The nicer Nokia ones were really only for people that had a Nokia fetish. Blackberry had the Curve, Pearl, anything else really significant? No 3G support on their AT&T handsets then either. E-mail was the biggest thing with Blackberries, and of course the iPhone outdid that as well. Oh, and how many touch screen phones were there?
Apple didn't have to compete. None of those devices were anywhere near what it was when it launched in summer of 2007. The reason they were so successful is because of the way they managed to package all of those "nifty" features in an effective and easy to use package. Voila iPhone. Apple is all about making everyday computing stuff easier, why not do it to a cellphone too? As far as I'm concerned, they're dumbing stuff down and get to sit back and watch all the entertained chimps play with their expensive toys.
Plus the Pre is so much more fun to tool around with. Rooting, SSH, Shell access, optware packages, CSS, JavaScript, XHTML--all relatively simple programming tools. It's nerdy cool without being incredibly flashy. People want iPhones so other people know they have them. It's all about being a snob and it seems the people on this blog live up to it pretty well.
uhh, people don't get the "cards" thing? Everyone I show it to gets it right away and is like "wow that is nice."
Everyone already associates programs as windows on their computer screen. So what is so hard to get as programs on the phone being cards? Same thing, different names.
@DR
It's called subsidization. Have you heard of it?
It was initially released at $599 with 2/year contract.
It's called apple ripping you off. Can't you feel it?
i want my 50$ back from the 200 i paid
Not sure when you purchased it, but I just bought mine last week, so I called Sprint this morning. After a few minutes of explaining the situation to an account manager, she immediately placed a $50 credit on my account, which will apply towards my first bill.
Combine this with the fact that I'm also on the Employee Plus Referral Plan, and it's a great deal. I loved using the iPhone, but I love the multi-tasking on the Pre more. I also love paying over $40 a month less for our family plan with unlimited data, messaging and 200 more minutes than the same plan on AT&T.
Someone is getting desperate
If they really want to sell them, they'd open up sales to SERO users.
They aren't interested in selling phones, they are interested in making money. They aren't going to sell you a phone so they can lose money on your account. Get over it and pay for service like everyone else or just shut the fuck up.
I predict on your deathbed you will be clutching your SERO contract in one hand, your 40 year old RAZR in the other, still spewing empty threats at Sprint about leaving because they won't allow you to put the new Pre 3000 on SERO.
Ignore all the SERO haters. They're just jealous they pay $400/year more than we do. I'll keep my $400 and you can keep your Palm Pre. Really.
Does S.L. stand for Skull Leader or is that just a coincidence?
The EPRP is still way better than AT&T and still allows you to get the Pre. Not as cheap as SERO, but you're also not using nearly as much data on any phones available on SERO. Sprint's a great company, but they're not going to stay around by offering plans that insanely cheap to everyone, especially not with heavy data-usage phones like the Pre or Pixi.
"... pre-holiday launch window..."
I see what you did there.
Ya, no one gets the whole "mutlitask" thing. At least not until Apple gets around to inventing it.
Here, in 2009, and we still have to deal with scams like main-in rebates. Pathetic. You're still paying $249 for the Pre.
You pay $199 in-store at Radioshack for a new contract, $219 for an upgrade - no mail-in rebates. I wonder how this price drop will affect prices tomorrow though.
I just confirmed that the price has dropped at Radio Shack! The Pre is now $149 with NO mail-in rebate for new and upgraded customers.
Regardless of what any agenda-pushing people on either side of the fence say, I'm happy with my Palm Pre, and it doesnt matter to me that the mass of the market chose the IPhone. The fact that it's not a phone my little brother wants to App-Rape is a +1 in my book. To each their own i guess.
Already?? hahaha hmm... something wrong?
I Tried the pre nice phone but too many shortcomings... the webos is great however! I resisted an iphone for the past 2 years relying on my trusty but oudated Palm Treo 650. I would have updated to the Pre but the apps that I NEED were not and are still not available. WIN OS is just too hard to use and learn. I got the gphone dev phone ( I need to use ATT) although very nice again the apps I need were not avaialble and I carried my treo around for reference material. As my apps became available on the iphone (my wife has 1 and loves it) I decided to cave and try it. Bought a used 1st gen from someone upgrading to the 3gs. After a couple of weeks I realised how easy this thing is to use. All the apps I need are available and EASY. I do not play games I have reference material calculator google calender, windows calender, and email that is just easy! I am FAR from a "fan boy" and do not have Apple computers but their devices do just work and are easy!
Dranon, I'm pretty sure this is how I'm going to go as well. I really liked the feel of the Pre, and I really really like how much cheaper Sprint's plans are (more minutes and unlimited texting for considerably less than AT&T's plans), but the incredible lack of apps is nearly impossible to ignore. If the Pre had even a few hundred apps at this point, I might give it more weight, but it only has a few dozen! I don't want to give Apple money if I can help it (I'm not a Apple hater, but I think Apple has gotten a little lazy in the innovation department, and I'd rather have my money encourage competition), but I think it might be unavoidable.
"Yeah can we get all three customers in the shot?"
"Awesome"
The Palm Pre is too Complicated for most people and as always people must put down what they dont understand. Instead of spending a little bit of time trying to educate themselves they stay ignorant and bad mouth out of Jealousy. Since they cant mentally multitask they cant operate a phone that can multitask so for all the little brains in the world there is still the iphone.
I purchased my Pre on August 11th (within the 30 day return period) for the $199 after rebate price. You would think that since I am in the return window they would adjust the price (like any other retailer). I emailed sprint this morning and they emailed me back saying that they would not credit me the $50 difference.
What gives? Has anyone been successful at getting them to match their own price?
Forget about that mail in at The Shack(RadioShack), Its 349.99 with 200$ Instant saving making it 149.99 in store.
Return it, then go to RadioShack and upgrade for $149.
i think i'll wait 2 months for them to bring down the price on that TP2 same as the Pre but i so want that Hero ugh
News Flash: A mail in rebate does not mean the price is lowered. The actual price is still 250! NOT 150!
Instant rebates count, but NOT MAIL IN.
Is not the money that you receive from a mail-in rebate still legal tender? How does this not count?
