Video: iTunes 9 Home Sharing and iPhone app management

We're also pumped about the new Home Sharing feature in iTunes 9, which lets you transfer content between five different machines directly without screwing around with network shares or USB drives. We've seriously been waiting for a feature like this since iTunes sharing was first launched -- it also works exactly like you'd expect, and we think it'll make managing media across multiple machines much, much easier. Videos after the break!
Home Sharing
App Management and Syncing

I'd imagine app devs are gonna be pretty pissed off that you can share apps too though. College dorms are just gonna be sharing apps all around.
lol what
"Now I want to show you home sharing. I turn on my sharing -- my wife's is already on. Her list shows up in this list on the left, and everything is available to me. Even Apps." --You can share apps too. I'd imagine that's gonna piss off a lot of app devs.
You still have to authorize the computer to play it and you can only auth 5 computers so it's not opening pandora's box or anything.
And if you were talking about the college dorm thing: At least at the college I went to the dorms were all on one big network, so iTunes showed up everyone's libraries. Meaning that with this you can share music, videos, and apps with everyone else in the dorm.
But is it going to be controlled by Credit cards? - so if the accounts are not registered to the same physical address, you can't share the apps?
@Mark
It's still exactly the same as before- it lets you share apps and other content with up to 5 computers you are allowed to authorize. The only difference is that you don't need to email them or put them on a thumb drive to get them in iTunes on other computers.
@Zan: True, but even so were I a dev I'd be angry about that. You expect each purchase to be for the person you sold it to, not their entire family.
The way I understand it, you can only share (read: move) with 5 computers. You could always go and download an app on another computer using your account, my wife and I do it all of the time. This just makes it easier. Also, I could already move music and movies (DRM'd) as long as it was to an authorized computer. All this does is use iTunes for the sharing. The college dorm room idea will not be possible.
Ah, didn't realize it worked that way before(don't have an iPhone or iPod Touch). Still, though, making it easier and highlighting that ability to everyone seems like somewhat of an affront.
You can only share to authorized computers. You are allowed a maximum of 5 ... but that doesn't mean 5 computers outside of your own. Because your desktop needs an authorization, and so does your iPhone. That leaves 3 more authorizations. Furthermore Apple only lets you de-authorize a limited number of computers per year. I ran into that when I got my 3Gs because I constantly re-install and got my original iphone PLUS 3G. I wen't through all of my de-authorizations so when I got my 3Gs I could not sync it without calling Apple, being put on hold, and getting my account reset.
The college dorm idea works, you'd just have to authorize five computers in your building. Your friends would then be linked into four different people and you could access a very large collection that way. Of course after your freshman year ends and you all split up well then you have to call Apple and beg them to reset your authorizations. But it seems to work in principle.
nice
Not for me...
Has crashed 3 times just trying to download some apps...
W7 x86 7100 =(
I'm digging the app management. Not being able to shuffle around the apps in iTunes AND the iPhone itself has been a frustration. Frankly it's amazing it wasn't put in place prior to this.
Home sharing works exactly like i'd expect? So I have to leave itunes running on every computer, enter into a nondisclosure agreement with apple, then allow them to database the mac addresses of the machines so that I may never switch them in the future without written authorization from congress? Because, that's what i've come to expect.
You're an idiot.
gimmick
useless post
not rly
for a second there i thought that was an official apple screen shot and noticed Netshare in there and said "WHHHHAAAAAAT?!?!?!?', nice guys :P
Yes, and you'll need NetShare since 3.1 broke the benm.at tethering enabler.
That's the reason I'm not upgrading yet. My iPhone is my primary internet connection right now. I don't like jailbreaking (it's too damn complicated). I have NetShare, but since it works over WiFi, it just eats the battery - even when the iPhone is plugged in!
Why don't you use the tethering in 3.0 by replacing the .ipcc file on your iPhone? I use it for tethering over USB and it's great.
I ive in UK, just installed the iTunes, but I don't have the new layout of the iTunes store
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
Any ides why?
I think the store is actually just HTML pushed into the itunes frame. I think the backend (apples servers) need to be updated.
Really, Nilay?
The Obama 08 app? Seriously?
Loser...
I shouldn't say loser, I should say...
Baaaa Baaaaa
Note the checkbox, my man.
Consider it noted hahaha
Oh yeah, is that Mint.com business good?
Have been looking at it, kinda paranoid...
Hard to believe you're a Zune fan.
Ooo he's got a Zune icon, get'em boys!
Whatever, sheeple.
I'm not sure how being a Zune owner relates to making fun of an Obama Election app from this time last year, but rage on you cool people!
Ha ha ha ha! That's awesome! You took the word "sheep" and added it to "people" to get a whole new word that insinuates people are like sheep! That's brilliant! Awesome man! You're a witty son of a witch, is what you are! You're a hoot!
I'm going to use that from now on, because you invented the coolest, most awesome way to insult people using one word instead of two! You should copyright that, man. That's f*cking clever sh*t right there.
Keep being AWESOME, dude. Oh, yeah!
i know this is kinda off topic... but im just gettin in from work and reading about the new touch. its hilarious how we were all so saudy about the camera. well... half saudy neway
[relevance]: no iphone/dont use itunes and dont think thisll change my mind... cant keep me from mah torrents and good ol' drag n' drop :)
No more 3rd person, skyblaze?
ah, been real sick lately...... noticed its kinda been affecting the way i do things. skyblaze'll be back to normal soon tho, ya digg :)........ i hope
does it auto update my music yet?
still waiting for that. how hard is it to monitor a folder? i'm getting sick of waiting for this.
That's an amazing capability ... being able to create custom screens with the icons you want on it. Welcome to 2004 Apple.
Yeah, sooo 2004, now which phone let you do all that multiple-screen-thing-with-icons-you-move-about-like-that-with-your-finger again in 2004, I forgot...
You mean the Treo?
=)
Not without a stylus, it wasn't
Sounds like a nice update.
Can I finally not sync the weather and stocks app? That would be awesome..
think i found a bug in 9.0 -- minimize 9.0 on an xp machine as a toolbar and 9.0 crashes.
overall i really dont like 9.0
Notice that all my albums with more the one disc are no longer in order according to disc number (Disc 1, 2, etc). There showing up as if there are on all on one disc.
Example: Instead of Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium showing up as 2 disc under one album title, it's showing up as 1 disc under one album title.
This sucks - anyone got a fix yet?
I guess I wont be able to do it because i have pirated apps.
There is an engadget app in the photo...
Yes-
Nilay, details on the engadget app. please.
That's a web link to the engadget web site in Safari, not an Engadget app. Try it yourself, navigate to engadget.com on your iPhone/iPod Touch and select add to home screen.
