Mac OS X 10.6.1 update now live
Well, that was fast -- just over week after Snow Leopard officially shipped, the first update's on the books. Nothing major in the changelog here, but we're told Flash has been updated to a newer, more secure version. Let us know how it goes for you, eh?

- Addresses an issue in which some printer compatibility drivers might not appear properly in the Add Printer browser
- Addresses an issue that might cause DVD playback to stop unexpectedly
- Addresses an issue that might make it difficult to remove an item from the Dock

wahoo!
At least Apple recognized that there were problems and rushed out an update. Now I would have preferred they got it right from the start, but these days, nobody seems to get it right from the start.
wahoo indeed. I'm still waiting to add snow to my leopard, until things get sorted out. It was a pain to deal with leopards problems immediately after it was released and regardless of updating my programs, I'm just not in the mood for delta releases.
My new philosophy: No more cutting edge = No more bleeding
I didn't realise this was news worthy.
Mac OS X 10.6.1 = "Snow Leopard Prancing"
Apple historically releases a quick X.X.1 update shortly after release to fix immediate issues. Mac IT guys generally believe a OS X version is fully stable and supported by X.X.3 or X.X.4.
you people from the west can enjoy this. Here, in India, it will take atleast 2 weeks for Snow Leopard to even land!
@Vagrant
I don't disagree with you in general, but Snow Leopard is a far cry more stable than the original release of Leopard. Really, the only thing unstable about it are programs that are no longer completely compatible (which are few).
According to Apple, SL was intended to be a stability, performance, and efficiency release, so it might be worth not waiting too long.
I was like wahoo! as well and immediately clicked on , then Software Update... but after I did so I remembered I haven't bought or installed Snow Leopard yet. haha
@bondsbw
To be honest, I have not been impressed with Snow Leopard. It is more stable than Leopard was on Day 1 but that's hardly something to crow about since I had kernel panics back then. While a lot of the issues are indeed caused by 3rd party applications I continue to have problems with Apple's own Mail application, which crashes frequently when you attempt to add an attachment, for example. I wouldn't mind so much but the issues I have been having were on a clean install so everything should be perfect.
Overall, Snow Leopard has failed to deliver improved performance, improved stability and improved security. The only way is up at this point but I am honestly stunned that Apple didn't get this one right on Day 1 given its remit. I have installed the update and hope that this does indeed tackle my issues but I'm not holding my breath.
OMGOMGOMGOMG
OMGWTFBBQ!!!
this is the reason why Apple is crap.
Oh man! My mockery of Apple fanboys is low ranked.
Are there any uses for openCL yet or is it a dust grabbing feature?
I'm pretty sure the Finder is at least OpenCL accelerated, along with preview and a small collection of other official OS X things.
wow
Mac Mini 1.83Ghz Core Duo still having problems with DVDs and Video in general using Front Row.
Shit. Well, I'm glad I downgraded to Leopard.
Same setup here, no issues though, if anything, seems snappier. What are your symptoms? Its amazin' that OpenGL flies on such a little unaccelerated graphic chip with crap hardware ... Apple knows its about the software and writing optimized code. If only M$ knew that, they could get Aero to fly on the same shit chip without a class action lawsuite for false 'Vista Compatible' stickers.
only 9mb, i'm impressed!
It shows as 75.1mb on my end :S
Ha! The OSX update is 9.8 mb for me
... but the HP Printer Driver update is 56 mb! Awesome.
It was 75.1MB on both our 2006 iMac and my early 2009 MacBook Pro.
My old 4,1 MacBook hasn't been performing as well as I thought it would since I upgraded. Maybe this'll fix something.
Apple is pumping out patches/ fix/ updates as frequently as MS these days. What's up with that?
it's not as frequently, it's just as fast.
so it's good to the user then.
They have security flaws just as numerous as Microsoft, only not nearly as exploited and they keep it wrapped under extreme secrecy. Service Pack little over a week after release? How many security flaws do you think Apple fixes without acknowledging them to the public. Hundreds. They always list it as "bug fixes" and that's all you'll ever hear about it
@Jordan,
Not necessarily. Most of the time the security holes are remedied by Security Updates (as can be seen on the Apple download page) with namings like "Security Update ", although some of it are pretty late (such as Java update). An as for the point update (consider the case of 10.5.x), most of the time it's focusing on instability issues and even enhancements (on performance and responsiveness), bundled with previously released security updates and firmware updates (between point updates).
So yup, for most of the time it does seems to me that point updates (e.g. 10.5.x) are service packs. Again, considering the Leopard case, they only got 8 point-updates to date (10.5 - 10.5.8), so it's safe to assume that they are service packs and not necessarily security patches.
Jordan- You're pulling your "extreme secrecy" claim out of your ... well, uhm, let me direct you to their support page and please let me know if it says "bug fixes" or if it goes in to enough detail for you:

Meanwhile Windows is slowly turning into a UNIX class OS, with UAC, 'users' instead of that stupid and long winded 'Documents and Settings'. Whats next, admin level security on ports below 1024 like other UNIX OSs?
Now only if Microsoft's UAC wasn't as ugly as OSX's 'admin' password prompt. Vista seems to do it way too frequently and when it does, *BOOM* black screen for a few seconds...
I don't know if its gonna Blue Screen or even comeback. To me, it interrupts other processes like text I'm reading in another web page or application. Also, its modal.. .so you have to freeze everything. Overall it just plain sucks.
OSX's more 'appropriate' admin dialog prompt is less invasive and lets me get to it when I want to.
You can adjust the UAC popup in windows 7 (and vista through a registry edit) so that it doesn't blank the screen and turn off DWM for that short time. It's done to prevent graphical exploits. I hope that's pretty enough for ya.
Is that a REG_KEY setting in a string or a hex value? Because, ya know the registry is so intuitive, even grandma can do it, right?!
Dont get me wrong, OSX is Unix and that's 'scary complicated' something Apple is known for, right?!
I for one love all the Windows complications and nuances without the convenience or power
This is ridiculous.
While we're at it, why don't you start posting about all Ubuntu updates and weekly Windows updates as well?
(Yea yea, I know, why bother commenting if I don't like the story... but hey, this is below the threshold of even not caring).
you've just answered your own question.
congratulations!!!
Well, "dot" updates to Apple's OS are generally seen as a "Service Pack." I'm almost positive Engadget always posts about Windows Service Packs - all through beta to release, just like Apple's updates.
Apple has smaller, quicker updates for OS X; at least 8 or 9 times through each version's life. Microsoft has heavier updates that they spread out and use to update Windows 2 or 3 times in each of its version's lives. Both get equally covered. Just because 10.6.1 came out a week after Snow Leopard's release, that doesn't mean Snow Leopard is going to updated weekly. It'll be months before we see 10.2 so just calm the hell down!
They have two different strategies, let's agree on that. This is far from a service pack. This is like the equivalent of 8 or 9 patches on "patch tuesday" but rolled together in one single installer.
10.5 to 10.6 isn't a service pack, either, that's like Vista to 7 (not Xp to Vista).
Some OS X point updates are more significant than others. SOME could be seen to be as major as a service pack (like where Apple redid the video subsystem in OS X 10.4.3). This, is nothing more than a few patches rolled into one installer.
Starting to wish I hadn't 'upgraded' my late '08 MBP to Snow Leopard, been having random application crashes ever since which used to work perfectly on Leopard. Nothing seems particularly faster, battery life (for me) is definately worse and Exposé is just awfully laggy but apparantly some other people are having the same problem. Not impressed so far..
It disabled the four finger expose gesture... More problems to an already broken SL.
I knew I should have chosen to clean install option...oh wait.
Clean install works fine. Just boot off the disc. That's how I did it.
No, thats not enough.
I did a fresh install. All you have to do is swipe your hard drive clean and reinstall snow leopard. exactly what I did and i'm running fine. even kept my windows 7 rc1 partition intact.
Yeah, it's pretty easy. Boot of the disc, use Disk Utility to wipe your Leopard partition, format as HFS+ Journaled, select that volume for your install. Wait twenty minutes and then you're in a clean install of 10.6.
In Soviet Russia Mac OS X 10.6.1 updates you!
I'm apologize profusely for that but I had to!

OMG Can it run Crysis?!
OVER 9000!
and of course
is a 'bag of hurt'.
Please add "It's a great gaming machine!"
/facepalm I knew I forgot something!
I for one welcome our new snow leopard overlords.
No, it's 75.1 mb, I took a screenshot http://imgur.com/UkbBf.png
I think it was even a bit higher for me (Aluminum MacBook; clean SL install).
for me it was OVER 9000!
