C'mon folks, say it with us now: "Finally!" After
T-Mobile USA and
Sprint decided to charge two arms and three-quarters of a leg for HTC's fancy-but-not-world-changing Touch Pro2, Verizon Wireless has
stepped in to show those other guys how to price a phone appropriately. Big Red's version of the WinMo 6.1-packin' handset will be available starting tomorrow (just as
we'd heard) for $199.99 on contract, though that
is after a $100 mail-in rebate. You already know what to expect in terms of specifications -- 3.6-inch WVGA tilting touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, built-in GPS for VZ Navigator and a microSD expansion slot. Now, there's just the decision to overlook Sprint's
Any Mobile, Anytime plan or not...
From Sprint's website: "This plan includes: * Any Mobile, Anytime: Unlimited domestic calls from the Sprint network to and from ANY U.S. mobile phone regardless of carrier. Any network, any time."
The way that reads, it's both incoming and outgoing to and from any other mobile phone. With this plan, in essence, the number of subscribers on the network no longer matters, at least not for you as the Sprint subscriber. Now you don't have to be on the same network as your friends just because they are on that network in order to get free calls with them. This was somewhat true with the introduction of MyFaves and A-List etc, but now it is unlimited minutes with an unlimited number of friends' mobiles without concern for what network they are on.
Just called 4 Verizon stores in Columbus Ohio and none had stock to sell tommorow. If you read the official launch it says you can "order" online, thru business, and in stores. Sucks if have to order tomorrow to get this
@ ckeegan the sprint anymobile plan is for incoming and outgoing calls do your research
A lot better than $350, that's for sure, I'll get mine from Sprint to get 50 tv channels via 3G streaming (MobiTV), because FloTV sucks and Verizon and AT&T don't have squat when it comes to phones that work with tv and only get 12 channels, as opposed to Sprint where you can get 50 channels via 3G on pretty much all phones that do 3G.
Now all I'm waiting for is sprint to go from $350 to $200 then I'll buy the touch pro2.
I just checked Verizon and they sell it for $299 with contract, so what's up with that $200 price?
Verizon posted this on their website recently
Price and availability:
* The HTC Touch Pro2 will be available for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement on a voice plan with an e-mail feature or e-mail plan. Customers will ........

However there phone listing shows the price as 299

One of them seems to be a typo. I would guess the news item is correct and the phone price listing the typo. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, what's up with that?? I was about to do the online upgrade with my $50 credit, but even after that, $250 is too much for me right now. ((Sadness)) I wonder if they'll change the price any time soon?
Just call telesales people, they'll confirm the $100 MiR. I just ordered mine, and she confirmed $133 after rebate, but that price also includes delivery by noon tomorrow (Saturday).
same here! life is good.
TP2 NOT in VZ stores in my part of Florida...and there was an error in the system when I tried to order online...but I just ordered via phone.
UPGRADE price I paid (for current VZ customers) is $249 ($267 including shipping/taxes), but I'll get $100 of this back as a rebate.
All I had to sign-up for in addition to my existing $69.99/mo-for-700-minutes voice plan was $29.99/mo for unlimited email & web...and commit to accepting the "terms of the offer" (2-yr contract extension including the added $29.99 data plan) within 30 days (or pay a $250-ish penalty which I assume would bring the phone cost to the no-contract price).
Tethering would be $30/mo more (and has usage limits), and I may need that occasionally, but not often, so I didn't sign-up for it initially.
Plan to add VZ Navigator after I get the phone to give it a try (if I don't like VZ Nav & can't find another way to get a different Navigation app, I'll consider "flashing" the memory to unlock the phone).
Phone rep answered a few questions I was un-clear about:
Can TP2 run multiple windows/apps simultaneously? (YES).
Does TP2 support FLASH on websites? (YES).
Can I purchase "apps" in some sort of an "apps store"? (YES).
Can incoming calls to my VZ number be routed via wi-fi, like T-Mobile does? (NO).
That last one is unfortunate, as I must be the only person in the US with no VZ cell service at home, but I still bought the phone (it arrives no later than end-of-day Tuesday Sep 15). Hope it lives up to my very-high expectations...Chris.
Thanks ChrisP - great review points.
I do want this phone and can upgrade for $149 after rebate but just need to chew a little while longer on the add'l monthly email/web cost. Will digest soon.
btw: 10+ year with VzW and happiness improves each year with better phones, service, cust service (was not always good years ago). This positive trend will hopefully continue.
Hey just saw this:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=4998
and noticed that it only supports 16gb memory expansion. I live in Chicago where things have a habit of being stolen and I've been holding off on new mp3 player AND phone for this puppy. now i might have no excuse besides the iphone
Obviously no one has a 32gb card to test yet, as I've been waiting for them to be released. However, HTC's site lists SD 2.0 compatible, and that standard should technically support up to 32gb.
I personally would be surprised if it had trouble with a 32gb card, but I guess we won't know for sure until they're released.
First of all, for all you Maggiano lovers, get real! We have them here in Arizona. I have eaten there 3 times to give them the benefit of the doubt. LOUSIEST non-Italian fake azz food I have ever eaten.
Now, on to the phone. Regardless of the difference in the price between Sprint and Verizon, it just doesn't matter. Regardless of the difference of the price of the plans between the two, it also, just doesn't matter. Long after you people forget what you are saving, you WILL remember the difference in the quality of service between the two. Sprint is a hack company compared to Verizon. I have had them both. I fired Sprint after being a loyal customer for almost 8 years. They dropped calls ALL the time. Verizon does, but almost never. This is far more important to business users like myself whos phone is their life line to their business.
So if you are worried about nickels, you are getting the wrong company for the wrong reason. Just my 2 cents.
Bachlogic:
Depends where you are. Verizon does NOT work at my house OR my office. Sprint does work at both. Verizon has told me they'll let me out of my contract with no penalty if I want, because they acknowledge the service here (in the suburbs of a 100,000 population city in Florida) is marginal.
If you order it online like I did, (My 2 year ended this month! :D ) you can do a 2 year upgrade for only 200$ NO M.I.R. I paid 216$ flat. Really an amazing deal by Verizon. This will definitely keep me a happy and loyal customer. 4 years so far. Plan to stay!
no offense but you should have paid $100. $299 - $100 online discount - $100 New every 2 discount. maybe if you call them, they'll make it right
( i just bought one for $124 w/ overnight Saturday FedEx delivery. I know it can be done )
I bought mine from VZW.com and was out the door at $168 before tax, also found free overnight shipping code online.
I dropped Verizon in 2004 and started with Cingular, then ATT>>>Had my HTC 8125 in 2005, my 8925 tilt in 2007 and now my (6.5windows) tilt2.......I have my family plan, rollover minutes, and have not had a dropped call since (wait for it).......I quit Verizon......CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!
